Thanks so much for the journey everyone. You cant imagine how happy I am doing this, and with the community that's been built here. I hope you all enjoy the percentage part as well, I did it just for fun and shouldn't be taken as a review score or anything. Just a fun way of measuring what I liked/didnt like. Which is also why this isn't an album "review"; I'm not familiar with Genesis career and discography to properly give a review. And I wouldn't want to anyway. Keep it light, fun, and positive. Have a great day everyone, you guys seriously make me smile and enjoy exploring music in a way I never did before; with company. p.s.- In case you got here before watching my individual reactions to each song, heres the full playlist! I’m excited about you going through Foxtrot! I just wanted to give you a tip - when you listen to songs from Foxtrot, find the versions that say “New Stereo Mix.” In 2007 (?), Tony Banks remixed all the Genesis albums to improve the sound quality. In my opinion, these old albums were greatly helped by the new stereo mixes - they sound a LOT better. Especially these old albums from early in their career. Remember, when Genesis recorded Foxtrot they were still an unknown band, so they didn’t have much money to spend on the studio recording, producers, engineers, etc., so the sound is not as polished as Trick of the Tail, when they had made a name for themselves. I’ve been listening to Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, and Genesis since 1981 (I was 8 yrs old), so I love hearing your reactions to these Genesis tracks as you listen with “new ears”, especially track-by-track through a whole album.

It's very heartwarming to watch people from the younger generation discovering and getting into Genesis. I have noticed a few Vloggers are starting to do this also, and what surprises me considering how hugely influential they were, is how few people know anything about them. Sadly the Genesis faithful are dwindling each year. The ripples never come back, but perhaps new pebbles can be dropped into the pool and form new ripples too!

For performance, I would agree Phil is the star. I love his vocals and drumming on this album. But for me, it’s the songs that are the real “stars” (or standouts). Phil could make almost any song sound good but he simply was never a complex songwriter. And that’s okay, but these songs are works of art. For songwriting and overall creativity and incredible chord structures and melodies (either sung or played), Tony Banks gets the GOLD star, with Rutherford getting the SILVER star! Haha Steve’s guitar playing is simply stratospheric. He takes you TO the stars! 🌟⭐️✨⚡️💥 You’ll love Foxtrot! The opening and closing songs are out of this world fabulous! BUT, they will get better the more you hear them. Thank you for this final thoughts video and all the others. I love it that we can all learn something from each other. You have given us some valuable insights I wouldn’t have had on my own. After so many years, it’s surprising that this could happen. It’s great to be a passenger on this journey. Sounds like you’re a Genesis addict now, like so many of us became long ago. I don’t have to listen to Genesis so often today because these songs have been a part of me for (gulp!) 5 decades! I still love to hear the music live though. Today I bought another Steve Hackett ticket for his just announced Long Island show. I can’t get enough of his live shows. His solo music is spectacular too. What will it take to get you to go to the Orlando show? Sorry to be a pain ... but you can’t miss it! I have good friends and family but none of them are music freaks like me (and Gary was). I have loved Genesis for 40 years. I've seen them 17 times. Peter Gabriel is my ultimate favorite person. I am loving this! I just saw Phil and saw Peter last with Sting. If you get the chance - Go! I really recommend old concert footage when Peter wore his crazy costumes. He was really nutty. Some people think it was dumb. I love it. He was so different then the core of the band. I think Genesis was great with him and without. Phil is awesome. You are doing great. Enjoy!

Patricia Perini I’m sorry to hear this sad news. 😪 I still have concert friends but nobody to just listen to albums with anymore like we did years ago. It’s a different world now. Much more solitary. At least we can find kindred spirits online here to share how the music we love makes us feel. xx
@patriciaperini77295 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. I go to concerts quite often still. A lot of times I feel like Gary is there. I agree that people just listen to songs now as a singular unit. There used to be so much thought put into a full album. That's why The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is my favorite. What is better than a double concept album by Genesis? And "No" not The Wall. Ha!
@justintime420005 жыл бұрын
Patricia Perini 😊 I agree. Definitely not The Wall! I still remember how stupid the movie was! A Lamb movie would have been infinitely better! I’m not into Roger Waters. I like the David Gilmour Floyd songs but they’ve gotten played too much. I can listen to the old Genesis records and never get sick of them. The NYC of Rael’s time is long gone, but when I first moved here in ‘81 I thought of The Lamb a lot because there was graffiti everywhere. I still see it when I go out to Brooklyn but it’s not the artistic kind like long ago. Manhattan doesn’t have the tolerance for it anymore. I’m sure Gary is still with you!

Great review Justin! I could tell when you were listening to each individual track that you were just 'getting it'. So true when you say that each song bounces off each other with contrasts. This is why it works for me. Definitely, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. - I think you were right when you say that fans were initially concerned when Phil took over from Peter, but because Collins' was 'one of their own' they were happy to accept it and trust in the band. It's so hard to pin it down, and probably wrong to, but for me, the driving force and engine of the band was always Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford. Trick Of The Tail moved their sound forward from the Lamb. Obviously different, but from the outset it feels like you are in safe hands. Glad you picked that as your favourite lyric too. I love that passage. For the same reasons. Excited to continue the journey with you. Foxtrot is fantastic. And different! And EPIC! Not a particularly easy first listen as it requires some concentration.

What a fantastic work ! Man, when you do something, you do it seriously. Thank you for that. OK. My turn. My favorite moment : 8:40 when you talk about your favorite moment. And for the favorite moment you picked. Clever. And for watching you make us see the proof that it is your favorite moment in action. My favorite lyric : "I was sick that day" (13:05). It is not exactly the highlight lyric of the show, there are of course many deeper, smarter or more epic other lines but this one shows up the sincerity of the protagonist, how fragile he could be. It moved me. Star member : Justin. No contest. Of course, the other members did the job well, and without them the band wouldn't be the same (LittleJack, the new partner of the formation, in particular, who has instantly connected itself with Mike as if he had always played with him, bringing a new fresh and great sound), but Justin was really awesome. Enjoyment level : the hard part. I didn't know how I will do that but I got help from Aardvark. Aardvark is my pet who share my life for so many years. And it's an aardvark by the way. Before I had Squonky, a squonk but he sadly passed away a few years ago. I've never found a squonk like that since, nor any other squonk at all should I say. They are very hard to find and when you finally get one, it's not so easy to live with. They are hiding most of the time... And you always put your naked feet into the little puddles they continually leave on the floor... Anyway... Thanks to Aardvark who helped me do the maths, here are the figures. Honesty and sincerity : 100% Clothe to JP (Don't stand so) : 95%. (love the t-shirt but I would have choose a different colour) Working hard : 100% Let's have fun : 97.8% As a reward for all your work, may be we could start a membership fee to offer you a box of colored pencils for the next time. I am in a big trouble now: I thought I knew all there is to know about Genesis, but as unbelievable as it seems, I didn't know that they've made an album called "Dracula and the fish". Is it a new one ? What a news ! Can't wait to listen. Obviously, 94.32% (thank you Aardvark) Genesis fan will say that "Supper's ready" is one the best track of the band. I am one of those, of course, but I may say that my favorite Foxtrot song is "Get 'em out by Friday". What a bass ! In general, I would say Foxtrot is the best bass album did by Rutherford. His sounds are really pushed at the front and allow to realize how great musician he is. I can't say it the best player ever, by far (we can hear a few wrong notes and many imperfections or approximations all along the album by the way), but to me he is probably one of the most inventive and melodic bass player. I have to go shopping now. I can't be late for the next time and I need to find some cloves of garlic to be safe before watching your new video. OK. Now that you've read my new opening, I can write the rest of my comment.

The band took a year off after Peter left so I think that's why this album sounds so fresh. During that year (1975), Steve Hackett released his first solo album "Voyage of the Acolyte" (which was also the first solo album by a Genesis member). It's often considered a lost Genesis album because Phil and Mike play on it. Phil sings lead on one of the songs. And it contains a lot of songs that were written by Steve for Genesis, but didn't make it onto the official Genesis albums. This would be a common trend. Steve would write a lot of songs for Genesis, but only a few made it onto the albums, which is why he eventually left the band in 1977. 1978's "Please Don't Touch" also contains a lot of songs he wrote for Genesis that didn't make it to the albums. You can even here some callbacks to "Wind and Wuthering" on "Please Don't Touch" because a lot of those songs were intended for that album.

Great summary. Welcome to the Genesis universe. There’s no turning back now! Looking forward to your Foxtrot reactions. You have probably picked my two favourite albums to start with (the next would be Selling England). A word of advice. Don’t let the massive shadow of Supper’s Ready diminish the quality of the other songs on the album. It is truly an epic, and one of the best rock songs ever recorded, but there are other gems on the album. The band follow form and open with the amazing and powerful Watcher of the Skies and then transition into what I believe is one of their forgotten masterpieces, Time Table. Can Utility and the Coastliners, their song about King Canute, takes some listening and you might not get the most out of it on your first listen but it’s another epic and a song that Steve Hackett still performs to this day. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

I came to Genesis with this album back in 1976. I did not know the band before this album (because I was just 16.). They are my all-time favorite band. This is perhaps my favorite studio album by the band (I’ve got dozens - approaching 100 - live recordings. They are just better live.). After this I went back and just consumed the older albums - Foxtrot quickly becoming my favorite. Later, the released the live tour version of A Trick of the Tail - called “Seconds Out.” It is unquestionably my favorite Genesis album ever. I discovered how much better I liked old Peter Gabriel tracks performed live with Phil Collins vocals. Then came Wind & Wuthering. I was officially a “Genesis Freak” as fans were called back then. I’ve interviewed the band on two occasions and seen them in concert more than 100 times. You definitely picked the right album to begin your journey with. Genesis are not always immediately accessible- which is true of most truly great music. They are the “progressive” rock band that never stopped progressing. Ignore the negative types who write off the Phil Collins years - they are just that weird sort who want to feel superior because they discovered the band earlier. Your final thoughts are fantastic. I am musically all over the board. I’d love to hear you do this sort of thing with bands like Massive Attack, Deacon Blue, Everything But The Girl and Paramore. Love it!

Glad you enjoyed it. This is the last Genesis album that I really like ... a great transition from Peter leaving to Phil taking over. I'd suggest going right back to the beginning and reacting to Trespass .... but I guess you'll do either Foxtrot or something later than "Trick". Enjoy your journey :) PS. Your percentages are pretty similar to mine ... although I'd swap the scores for Ripples and Mad Man Moon. PPS. Just got to the end of the vid ... Foxtrot it is then ;)

You're starting a journey I made about a year and a half ago. The difference being I was quite familiar with 80s Genesis but not the 70s era stuff. And I started from Trespass and moved slowly forward. By the time I reached Trick of the Tail I was quite enamored with the Gabriel era sound and was expecting a drop of quality when he left. At the time, I wrote to my son, away at college and the recipient/victim of my musical diary: I was really surprised when I first heard Trick, because I was expecting a drop in quality with Gabriel gone, but that's not the case at all. It sounds fabulous, arguably one of their best! I have two minor issues with the album. Firstly, though the album as a whole is great, no one song stands out to me as one of their very best, but I'll recommend the opening piece "Dance on the Volcano" as the standout. From the opening notes, Genesis is announcing that they're going to be fine. The second smaller issue with this album is that it sounds much more like Selling England than Lamb. Without Peter Gabriel there to push the envelope, there's nothing particularly experimental here. Still, great album! I had also concocted a rating system. Rather complicated really. I needed a spreadsheet to help me. I rated each song on a scale from 0-5 (yes, there are some zeroes in later albums), multiplied by the length of the song, scaled it by the length of the album, and compared it to a hypothetical perfect album. Trick scored a 72.6% for me. That doesn't sound great, but Trick turned out to be my third favorite album by Genesis after Selling England and Foxtrot. Foxtrot is my favorite and scored 91%, so I'm eager to hear what you think of that album.

I had 15 years to influence his musical tastes (with a lot of success) so I try not to impose too strongly my "new" finds on him and also try to keep an open mind to his bands. He turned me onto Muse for instance. But Genesis has touched a chord with him. He did a "Supper's Ready" reaction video for me for Father's Day last year, and he and I attended the Music Box Genesis cover band concert. He's a musician and is trying to learn how to play "Firth of Fifth" on the piano.

Thanks for doing these reviews and I am pleased you like my favourite band. In a time when Stock Aitken Waterman we’re producing most of the music that was played on main stream radio in the UK, I did not have any particular interest in music. I then heard the “Invisible Touch” Album played in a canteen while I was having lunch, it was 1986 and I was 15. I was late back because I just wanted to keep listening, songs like domino and Brazilian blew me away. I went straight out and bought it on cassette tape. For this reason Invisible Touch will always be my favourite Genesis Album. It was the start of a love with this band that has lasted ever since. I went backwards and bought each album getting more progressive each time and I love them all. I hope you enjoy Foxtrot, I can’t walk past a florist without thinking “A flower?” Because it. One question though, what is going on with your wall paper? Did you murder the other fella you did reviews with and not clean up probably after? 😳

Enjoyed the review, like watching JustJP TV. The content was well laid out, informative and entertaining. My only constructive criticism would be, the rating scale. The way I see it, there's a difference between liked and loved. I can listen to a song on a timer and say, I liked everything about this song and give it 100% because I enjoyed it, but the song didn't really move me or blow me away. Then you hear a song and it hits you like a lighting bolt and you're like oh my god that was magical, what would you score that song? You did say two of the songs made the playlist, so you did separate them from the other songs you gave 100%. I think you're on the right track, with the timer but I think you need to add other criteria to formulate the score and create separation. I look forward to the next album review.
@JustJP5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dukes; its an imperfect system for "rating" something as subjective as music, I more did it as a fun experiment for myself. Which is why I would never do something like this on a regular basis. Just for "Final Thoughts" videos and stuff. I'm not a reviewer or critic, and I wouldn't want to be taken as one lol.

Dukes I liked the stopwatch method because it seemed like something that political campaigns do with focus groups during debates. But, you’re saying that enjoyment is not binary (i.e. I loved it, I hated it, I loved it). And that makes sense too. Until Justin can get the boys in the JustJP Lab to invent an analog device to measure degrees of enjoyment, the stopwatch method works for me.
@JeromeDukes5 жыл бұрын
@@JustJP I liked the stop watch idea, I though it was creative. I was just saying based on your data there was a dependency between liked and loved and to create separation. Maybe add a few more criteria for each song. Maybe lets say, the timer is a bench mark and accounts for 50% of the score. Then you add a score for melody instruments, melody vocals, musicianship, lyrics, creativity etc to get 100%. Rating the album this way will add more weight to your opinion. Also it will bring your rating more down to earth. 95% is like total wow. I would have to date the ugly girl for quite some time to get to 95% in love with an album.

I'm not sure where to put this, so I'll put it here. I've seen many of your Genesis videos, and it is amazing that you decided to look into more Genesis songs based on your initial reaction to Firth of Fifth. In fact, I don't think I've seen you have any similar reaction to what you and Manny experienced in Firth of Fifth. Now on to Trick .... The beginning of Los Endos contained another composite piece from a song called "It's Yourself". It is a really awesome song and really shows the majesty that Genesis can create. You can find it on the Box Set #2 and KZbin. Unfortunately, it was cut from the album because there wasn't enough space on either side of the vinyl to insert it. Speaking of which, I remember a disc jockey noting that bands (including Genesis for Trick) had to decide the song order on the album sides. Of particular importance was not only the opening song on side 1, but also the opening song on side 2 to keep audiences interested. In this case, "Robbery, Assault, and Battery" is the opener to side 2. You had also mentioned that you wish Los Endos would go longer. Again, due to album length, Los Endos could not be longer, or at least too much longer. Re: why include "Robbery, Assault, & Battery" and leave out "It's Yourself" could come down to band preference. My personal thought is that RA&B may be more radio worthy. We'd probably need a Genesis guru to give more insight into song selection and order. I thought I remember seeing where "It's Yourself" would be between Squonk and lead into Mad Man Moon. But again, due to album constraints (vinyl and tape) the track was omitted.

@@JustJP, be careful how you do that with Yes. The pin the tail on the donkey approach (picking a random song from a random album) can be counter-productive and you end up settling on something that is unrepresentative of the band. Like Genesis, The Floyd and so many others from that period, Yes, really need to be taken album by album, rather than song by song. Fragile is something of an exception because of some commercial/financial constraints placed on them at the time. There is some filler because they needed to release an album quickly to pay for the keyboard player's fancy new gear. Although the long pieces, Roundabout, South Side Of the Sky, LongDistance Runaround/The Fish and (the absolutely jaw-dropping) Heart Of The Sunrise are all magnificent in themselves.

Favourite Moment: Mad Man Moon as the middle section "Sun and Sand" slows down and hits that blissful key change and mellotron swoop into the last verse. Lyric: "Angels never know it's time to close the book and gracefully decline" Member: Yes, Collins. Mad Man Moon is one of his best performances ever but also he stepped up with the drumming (Los Endos, Robbery) as well as percussion from bongos to xylophone.

Wonderful Final thoughts on the album JP! I have enjoyed the journey to get to this point. My thougts are along the same lines as far as the track rankings on most days. Some days they will change around depending on my mood and what all is happening, but that is to be expected with any art form I guess. The did come out of the gate strong with this album to be sure. I don't know if anyone else sees it the same as I do, but I think Peter left at the perfect time. By 1975 Prog Rock was fading and Punk and Disco were both coming on strong and taking over the radio. If Peter had stayed, Genesis would have remained a full on Prog group and that would have made production of their materiel much more difficult. The 4 man lineup (followed closely by the 3 man lineup) allowed for a more accessible sound and let them move slowly into the Pop scene in the early 80's rather than a major jump, such as that of Yes with the 90125 album. I liked your analytic approach to the album rating, which pretty much aligns with the way I feel about the album as a whole. While I like your favorite moment, mine would have to be at about the 4 minute mark in Los Endos with the drum and the closed fret strums while they are revisiting Dance on a Volcano. It is probably my favorite as I had just finished reading "The Lord of the Rings" and that part made it seem like the earth was a living, breathing beast while trying to climb the mountain... Again, just a result of experiences and timing. I love the refrigerator art! Hopefully that is where you put it! This coming from someone who can't draw a straight line with a ruler. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Foxtrot! Like others have said, Supper's Ready is truly epic, but don't let it overshadow the other tracks. Be prepared for a very, very different journey here. Each Genesis album in the Prog era really is it's own adventure and it will be what your hart and mind make of it. When you consider that this album was written and performed by 20 -21 year olds, it is truly amazing. Keep up the good work and enjoy! Our arms and legs are inside the car, and we are ready to go on another ride with you.

Anyways a great summary of the majestic and timeless Trick of the Tail, really enjoying watching you on your musical journey just hope there isn't to many bumps in the road, remember we are all here for guidance if you need it. P.S is your wife a maths teacher ? Cheers Justin.

JP, Welcome to the musical adventure of “Genesis”. No too albums are alike and the Live sets are better than the studio versions. Genesis were “The Best Live Band in the world. No one sounds like Genesis Live. Peace ✌🏻

I'm just curious how you would react to Duke - Genesis' controversial transition album from 1980 . Some view it as Genesis' last prog album, some see it as the start of Genesis pop.

You liked this album just like I did, the % made me laugh cos it's just like my take. The only difference was I'd put Los Endos in Squonk's place as favourite and add Entangled as an A class as well . Apart from that, your views mirrored my own in a most uncanny way.

You really need to hear It’s Yourself. It was a song that didn’t make it on the album and was supposed to lead into Los Endos.

Some random comments... Close To The Edge. As a band that they were more than just Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. Watching the youtube videos for the re-release of albums such as Foxtrot, Selling England etc., it's obvious that Banks and Rutherford see themselves as being the real force behind the band. Hackett was insecure in his position and Collins didn't feature in anyone's consideration at all, even though he claims he's the one that tried to move them forward "progressively" after spending nights watching Yes at The Marquee (a famous London music venue). Gabriel was seen as a competitor by Banks and Rutherford and Gabriel himself has a different perspective on them all. Close To The Edge. Actually, it's funny thinking back to that time but I don't remember any of my friends being equally enthusiastic about both Yes *and* Genesis. It was one or the other. It's not the the we loved Yes and disliked Genesis or vice versa, it's more like neither band showed on each other fans' radar, if that makes sense. For me, Genesis were one of those bands you should like but they never got above the meh level and I know that a lot of my buddies felt the same. U2 are the same for me. Close To The Edge I love Peter Gabriel's work but even his Genesis albums don't merit more than meh for me, as hard as I try. Firth of Fifth is really nice and very worthy but still... meh. Did I mention Close To The Edge? In preparation for Supper's Ready, I suggest you do some research on the Book of Apocalypse and English (not British) religious symbology. Those guys were all public schoolboys and choristers and that influence shows. Given what I've said above, you might not be crazy about Close To The Edge but we won't know until you listen to it. Final thought... Close To The Edge.

Back to 'Trick' - if you ever fancy yourself as a bit of a Phil Collins, you can have fun with this studio backing track of Squonk - there is a whole album of the studio tracks which goes under various titles on the bootleg scene - A Trick of The Takes, A Trick of The Tapes etc and yes, it includes Ripples. Ignore the titling on the frame, the guy admitted he pasted the wrong album info in and couldn't face changing it after, hehe (w & w of course refers here to the follow-up album Wind & Wuthering) Anyway, enjoy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWKvqJunhNJjjMk
