When people talk smack about Phil Collins, I think of this and the earlier incarnation of Genesis. For someone to step up and sing these songs as Phil did is nothing short of amazing. Add to that his stellar drumming abilities and you have a true musical legend. Shame people these days only know the "Disney" Phil.

I still find it amazing to return to this and think "How F'n LUCKY was Genesis to have a top notch singer in waiting behind the drums when Pete left?" The fact that he had the vocal abilities, range, and came from within are what saved them. As great as the band were I'm not positive another outside singer would have been welcomed like Phil was.

I never heard Bruford specifically call Genesis more of a "pop" outfit, but I've heard him mention that one of the major reasons he didn't particularly enjoy his time with Genesis was that they wanted the songs played the same every night, whereas in Yes and (especially) King Crimson he had room to improvise.

Its Your favourite ..fair enough.. but please have a bit of humility. not the best. I don't see how this performance is better than ..let say: 1973 live at rainbow version. Bill bruford? ? Phil gave it every bit as much as Peter. Still prefer the original, but I appreciate what Phil added.
@farleyboy644510 жыл бұрын
I also prefer the original, but having said that , Phil I think actually has a more melodic sound to the way he sings this song, he trails his lyrics at the end of them more than Peter did, and it seems to give the song a more mystical feel. When preformed live with a lot of volume, the band is like an earthquake of sound and emotion on this song, and I agree that it gives you an almost religious experience, because the emotion is so intense. When he sings the last verse I always have to fight back tears for some reason, and I am NOT religious at all. It just brings out emotion in me, and that as far as I am concerned, is what really good music is supposed to do, and they delivered with this song big time. Only Emerson Lake and Palmer can do that to me without lyrics.

Sorry wouldn't have went anywhere with Gabriel and Collins made the band so much better.... that's why genesis was finally getting noticed.. Gabriel was bankrupting genesis and if left in charge there never would have been a genesis period.
@sex6cult9revolution Жыл бұрын
@@amandabooth-b4f Gabriel wasn't "in charge." And HE was the reason they first got noticed at all. A single documentary would clarify that for you. Sure, A Trick Of The Tail and the albums that followed were more accessible than The Lamb and archaic albums like Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot and that did help broaden their fan base. However, many of the fans were there in the first place because they heard stories of Peter running around in crazy costumes from older fans. And that was all the papers were talking about - understandably to the chagrin of the other members...
