Phil, unfairly, gets a lot of flack of changing the band's directions too harshly. But the reality is that he was the one who pushed for songs like "Supper's Ready" to be kept alive in it's entirety. When pressed, he'll admit that 'the Lamb' is his favorite Genesis album. He never was the anti "old Genesis" people thought he was.

Mike and Tony explicitly stated that they wanted to make hit songs. They were tired of working hard and not making big money. It's a testament to their talent and hard work that they just decided to write hits and then those songs became hits. I don't begrudge them any of it as they wrote at least 8 excellent progressive rock albums before they decided to go pop.

Don't leave out Chester out of that. This footage, shot by me was filmed on 10/1/86. I had attended the two previous nights to get an idea of how best to shoot the show. There was a nasty woman sitting to my right that kept trying to deliberately get in the way of the camera. Thankfully she must have been a "new Genesis" fan because she went away during the "oldies" portion of the show. For the most part I was able to zoom to Darryl's side of the stage to avoid her when she got fiesty. At one point on the tape you can hear me say to her "can you please stop it already" to which she replied NO! My friend who accompanied me to these concerts would periodically massage my main camera arm while I held the camera with the opposite hand to rest. I took making good, steady videos very seriously back then. Back in 1986 videocameras were big stupid devices. My sure fire way of never getting caught entering the arena? It's kinda gross but I would put a shitted up pair of underwear on top of the clothes that concealed the camera in my bag. Whenever security would open my bag they'd see the shitty draws and push me through without a search of the bag. Worked all the time. At some point in the future I will upload the entire gig from the master tapes.

To all Peter Gabriel fans, Peter is a wonderful singer and a musician, but he's nowhere near my boy Phil's greatness. Frankly, no one is. Everything Phil touches, attempts, or, even covers, is epic, genius, legendary and cannot be surpassed. During 1980's, he owned the music industry, and everyone who meant anything in the business at that time, would have Phil participate in their projects, in any way possible. Phil is the best male singer of all time, bar none. His voice range is out of reach for everyone else. Look at that phenomenal drumming as well. Above and beyond other drummers' abilities. Phil is so shamelessly sick in everything he does behind his drum set. Phil not only saved Genesis, but he made it into what I think is the most well rounded band of all time. The fact that he was even more successful with his solo career, is outright hard to wrap one's mind around.
@Bentom869 жыл бұрын
88BigEtrain Amen! Can't say it any better than you did. Peter truly was great, but he left the band and people need to get over it. Most groups would have packed it in after losing both Gabriel and Hackett, but instead Phil, Tony, & Mike are responsible for the greatest resurrection ever for a band. There's no question that Phil was the better all-around performer, but REAL Genesis fans know that both guys were great in their 'own special way' (to quote a certain song from Wind and Wuthering).
@Dream900107 жыл бұрын
Genesis was Peter Gabriel. With Phil it was a translation of Genesis but he was holy and could add few prophechy, which is accepted as rest of the story. Grab a guitar you will find "wish you were here" in "another day in the paradise" in two minutes. But it's not the end. The end is A broadway show. Genesis to Revelation with original track of fifth of firth without the small satanic, wicked 5 notes extension, forcing the spirit to live the building. A show with gabriel, phill and rest. This will be done soon. I hope meeting them alive there.

AmericaFirst I was at this show, a gang of 52 of us from the Uk organised by the fan club, stayed at the Penta (Pennsylvania) across the road, one of my greatest memories, still following to this day, of upto Glasgow and Newcastle next friday for Phils shows, been a brilliant journey :)))

Saw it in Philly/ The absolute last gasp of the great Genesis. Glad it was recorded. They then played Invisible Touch right after that, I got disgusted and left.

No - if you don't chills from hearing Supper's Ready at all then there's something wrong with you!

This should be constantly presented in Psychology of Sport and Performance classes as an example of what it means to be in the zone. My boy Phil demonstrates to the world of music what it looks like when the greatest drummer of all time is so absorbed and lost in his performance, that not even burning and on fire MSG would stop him from playing drums to this epic piece by Genesis. This is utterly ridiculous, beyond epic drumming and vocal performance by him. Above and beyond all other "human" musicians' capabilities. As if the performance was not already beyond epic enough, my boy enhances it by drumming with white gloves on. God, I just love it!

It’s a damn shame that they only pro recorded that lane Wembley show on this tour. This is beautiful

@mlester72 It could have been worse. I had read that they had played Supper's Ready in Philly in '86. Then they come to DC, they get to the part in the medley where it's supposed to kick in, and instead it's . . . Afterglow. A very good song in and of itself, but, c'mon, nothing compares to Supper's Ready! I was literally heart-broken. Oh well, at least I saw Genesis in '82 when they played the whole song.

raelraven2 I know what you mean. I was at the DC show too. A bit of a letdown to hear Afterglow for the umpteenth time.

Oh my. I used to have this on VHS. I believe this was 10-1-1986. I was at the show on the 29th of September and the 22nd in Toronto. Thanks so much for posting this and providing the opportunity to relive this moment!

Thank you so much for your prompt reply and info-it's greatly appreciated! Yes, I do have the Wembley DVD and have seen that quick clip. What a bummer they never did sell these fantastic songs being performed on stage from the 80's! I only have their two box sets, The Movie Box and the Box set covering the 80's. thought maybe these performances could be in the other two I don't have, looks like that's that's not the case. Thanks again for your info!

It’s funny to think that at this point in time , the song was only 14 years old. Im sure it seemed like some ancient relic to the band (and fans) when really fourteen years is not that long.

Yeah odd to think that as I type this it nearly as close to its release than we are now to the last time Genesis played live.

@sharethemusic Hi Andy. OK. They played MSG 5 nights in a row. I was there for nights 1 & 2. I jumped out of my shoes when they went into this. In 1987 we got sick when they went into Afterglow instead. Citrus Bowl & Orange Bowl. As if you didn't know this already.

I was at both the 9/28/86 and 10/3/86 shows at Madison Square Garden in NYC. Search - Genesis , JFK stadium to see entire "Suppers Ready" performed 8/21/82 on youtube..

Saw this very thing at the old Philly Spectrum. One of the few Apocalypse in 9/8 they put out. I distinctly remember Phil playing a “then” brand new maple finished Gretsch kit. He mostly used his white or black ones.
