At 4:26 Phil: "And it's..." Fan: "Yeeeeeeeeeah!" Nice to see that there is at least one person in that audience that wasn't there for Invisible Touch. In 1986, SR was "only" 14 years old when IT was at #1 on the charts. Today, IT is 26 years old. Crazy.

Imagine go to a Genesis concert in 86, in the supporting tour for their most pop record (probably one of the poppiest records of all time!) and get this... It's just insane.

I came here when I looked up the fact that this was played on this tour... Had to see it to believe. hahaha radical stuff. how do you go from in Too Deep to Supper's Ready? A great trick to play on your girlfriend for sure... at this point Genesis fans likely had girlfriends and wives... I'm sure.

Phil, unfairly, gets a lot of flack of changing the band's directions too harshly. But the reality is that he was the one who pushed for songs like "Supper's Ready" to be kept alive in it's entirety. When pressed, he'll admit that 'the Lamb' is his favorite Genesis album. He never was the anti "old Genesis" people thought he was.

Phil didn’t change anything. It was the three of them equally responsible of the output.

Mike and Tony explicitly stated that they wanted to make hit songs. They were tired of working hard and not making big money. It's a testament to their talent and hard work that they just decided to write hits and then those songs became hits. I don't begrudge them any of it as they wrote at least 8 excellent progressive rock albums before they decided to go pop.

Played this song so many times in the car, would always sing it with the tears starting to flow. Went to one of the Wembley 1987 gigs,,, would have loved them to have done this. I would probably have welled up in front of 72,000 people. What a piece of musical magic. Phil put so much effort into this segment.

True. They played Madison Square Garden in NYC, 9/29, 9/30, 10/1,10/2,10/3 1986. I was at 9/29 & 9/30. The teenagers in front of me night 1 thought they were hit by a mack truck when they did this. They were in shock, and had no idea that this is 8 minutes of a 23 minute all time epic. For them In The Cage/In that Quiet Earth/Apocalypse in 9/8 were all 1 long epic. They thought they would see Phil sing In The air Tonight. I told them NOT TONIGHT!!!!

Listen in to the passage of the Apocalypse in 9/8 between 1:55 - 2:14 when my boy Phil's divine drumming is accompanied by the Tony's organs sound. I have personally not heard anything in my entire life, thus far anyway, that would be more emotional orgasm inducing than this duo's unprecedented instrumental pinnacle of sound and rhythm. Every time Tony has a prominent part in any Genesis instrumental performance, one instantly detects the marvelous synchronization he has with Phil. The outcomes have always been above and beyond epic, eternal and enduring classics.

Don't leave out Chester out of that. In fact, what makes that segment so brilliant drum-wise is that the tom fills they do, they alternate who plays, so Phil hits a tom twice, then Chester hits one twice and so and so forth, when done in combination you get that continuous run of tom fills. They did that kind of thing a lot and it was made Genesis live so interesting!

This footage, shot by me was filmed on 10/1/86. I had attended the two previous nights to get an idea of how best to shoot the show. There was a nasty woman sitting to my right that kept trying to deliberately get in the way of the camera. Thankfully she must have been a "new Genesis" fan because she went away during the "oldies" portion of the show. For the most part I was able to zoom to Darryl's side of the stage to avoid her when she got fiesty. At one point on the tape you can hear me say to her "can you please stop it already" to which she replied NO! My friend who accompanied me to these concerts would periodically massage my main camera arm while I held the camera with the opposite hand to rest. I took making good, steady videos very seriously back then. Back in 1986 videocameras were big stupid devices. My sure fire way of never getting caught entering the arena? It's kinda gross but I would put a shitted up pair of underwear on top of the clothes that concealed the camera in my bag. Whenever security would open my bag they'd see the shitty draws and push me through without a search of the bag. Worked all the time. At some point in the future I will upload the entire gig from the master tapes.

I must say you have, as far as I know, one of the last videos of this band playing Supper's Ready, period!. It was during the US leg of the tour Phil list his voice enough where he couldn't keep pulling it off every night. By the time the live video was recorded at Wembly on the 4th of July 87' to close out the tour, this had been long replaced. Who cares about the quality, it's good enough to see. Prior to this it was the King Biscuit recordings to hear another epic Qiet Slumbers, which kicked ass. All of these are simply the best piece of music ever recorded , PERIOD!!!! Thank you for sharing this with us. It's so incredible to see as someone who was too young to go to this show at the time. If anyone else has more than this footage, please let me know. Cheers

I waited overnight in line to get tickets for this show and experiencing this version of the In The Cage Medley where they played the last 2 sections of Supper's Ready made it all worth it! Funny thing was this was the first time I'd ever heard it, since I was not familiar with Foxtrot. The albums I had before the 'Three' era, were Selling England, Lamb, Trick & W&W. So I was not familiar with this at all! Needless to say this piece of music has had a profound and lasting impact on me musically. What an experience, I will never forget!

So true. I get sick of people who are so close-minded about Collins that they can't even admit that he sang the closing sections of Supper's Ready better than Gabriel, especially once Phil got that raspy edge in the 1980s to go along with his ability to hit high notes. Seeing them do this song in its entirety on the 1982 Encore tour was the most powerful experience I ever had at a concert. Simply awe-inspiring.

@@bobbywillis1466 Absolutely, I think Mike's and Tony got lazy and leaned on Phil's talent a lot which would explain the relative lack of technical effort they put in after 1982, while Phil just kills it on drums and vocals in 1986 and 1987.

@@bobbywillis1466 You know, I have a feeling that Phil was the magical ingredient in the band since late 1970 when he joined. He was the glue that held it together. He had the music biz contacts and the charisma and smarts. They would never have found another singer after Pete left because they were too insular, so Phil saved their ass in 1975.

que bueno ver la reacción de los fans ante la verdadera muy buena e innovadora música de la banda!, en esa época la mayoría solo se enganchaba con su etapa pop dejando de lado todo su valiosísima música anterior a los 80.

It was a five night run at MSG. You say this was Day 5, I was there on Day 2. What a magical experience! To be able to see it again brings me right back to 1986. Thank you so much.

Like Beethoven's 9th, Mahler's 3rd and Wagner's Tristan und Isolde and other great classic anthems; Supper's Ready is one of truest expressions of the revelatory and redemptive power of music. Chokes me up every time I hear it.

Old vid. Doubt this comment will gain traction. But could someone please get Pete and Steve to return. Let Nick take over for Phil and let’s see an old school Genesis show. Let this song be the ending.

To all Peter Gabriel fans, Peter is a wonderful singer and a musician, but he's nowhere near my boy Phil's greatness. Frankly, no one is. Everything Phil touches, attempts, or, even covers, is epic, genius, legendary and cannot be surpassed. During 1980's, he owned the music industry, and everyone who meant anything in the business at that time, would have Phil participate in their projects, in any way possible. Phil is the best male singer of all time, bar none. His voice range is out of reach for everyone else. Look at that phenomenal drumming as well. Above and beyond other drummers' abilities. Phil is so shamelessly sick in everything he does behind his drum set. Phil not only saved Genesis, but he made it into what I think is the most well rounded band of all time. The fact that he was even more successful with his solo career, is outright hard to wrap one's mind around.

88BigEtrain Amen! Can't say it any better than you did. Peter truly was great, but he left the band and people need to get over it. Most groups would have packed it in after losing both Gabriel and Hackett, but instead Phil, Tony, & Mike are responsible for the greatest resurrection ever for a band. There's no question that Phil was the better all-around performer, but REAL Genesis fans know that both guys were great in their 'own special way' (to quote a certain song from Wind and Wuthering).

Genesis was Peter Gabriel. With Phil it was a translation of Genesis but he was holy and could add few prophechy, which is accepted as rest of the story. Grab a guitar you will find "wish you were here" in "another day in the paradise" in two minutes. But it's not the end. The end is A broadway show. Genesis to Revelation with original track of fifth of firth without the small satanic, wicked 5 notes extension, forcing the spirit to live the building. A show with gabriel, phill and rest. This will be done soon. I hope meeting them alive there.

This should be constantly presented in Psychology of Sport and Performance classes as an example of what it means to be in the zone. My boy Phil demonstrates to the world of music what it looks like when the greatest drummer of all time is so absorbed and lost in his performance, that not even burning and on fire MSG would stop him from playing drums to this epic piece by Genesis. This is utterly ridiculous, beyond epic drumming and vocal performance by him. Above and beyond all other "human" musicians' capabilities. As if the performance was not already beyond epic enough, my boy enhances it by drumming with white gloves on. God, I just love it!

@mlester72 It could have been worse. I had read that they had played Supper's Ready in Philly in '86. Then they come to DC, they get to the part in the medley where it's supposed to kick in, and instead it's . . . Afterglow. A very good song in and of itself, but, c'mon, nothing compares to Supper's Ready! I was literally heart-broken. Oh well, at least I saw Genesis in '82 when they played the whole song.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply and info-it's greatly appreciated! Yes, I do have the Wembley DVD and have seen that quick clip. What a bummer they never did sell these fantastic songs being performed on stage from the 80's! I only have their two box sets, The Movie Box and the Box set covering the 80's. thought maybe these performances could be in the other two I don't have, looks like that's that's not the case. Thanks again for your info!

It’s funny to think that at this point in time , the song was only 14 years old. Im sure it seemed like some ancient relic to the band (and fans) when really fourteen years is not that long.

@sharethemusic Hi Andy. OK. They played MSG 5 nights in a row. I was there for nights 1 & 2. I jumped out of my shoes when they went into this. In 1987 we got sick when they went into Afterglow instead. Citrus Bowl & Orange Bowl. As if you didn't know this already.

Saw this very thing at the old Philly Spectrum. One of the few Apocalypse in 9/8 they put out. I distinctly remember Phil playing a “then” brand new maple finished Gretsch kit. He mostly used his white or black ones.
