I always liked the idea of Skaven being a friendly compliment race in the Tau Empire. And they still worship “the great horned one” and because of that hilarious warp filled shenanigans happen constantly. Also The Skaven fucking with and wrecking Tau stuff so you still get that haphazard weaponry.

Played against GSC for the first time yesterday. It took maybe half an hour for my opponent to explain all his tricks and rules before the game started. These new rules definitely look more intuitive for new players or players not familiar with GSC

If I understand Cult Ambush correctly, the Markers are not directly tied to the units that have died. You select what unit to set up when the condition is met. So if Unit A is destroyed the first turn you place a marker. The Opponent manages to remove it in their turn and also destroy Unit B for which you also placed a marker. The next turn the Opponent doesn't manage to get into 9" of that marker, but you could theoretically set up Unit A instead of Unit B as both were placed in Cult Ambush and remained there.

Yep, and they stay there even for future rounds of cult ambush too. If you lose a strong unit on turn one, but it gets denied its marker, you can bring it back round 2 or 3 or 4 of cult ambush after other units get wiped.

The army rule is not only super flavorful but also has some insane strategy potential. I love the idea of placing the marker perfectly to lure an enemy unit into the open to stomp it out, but getting shot into oblivion for doing so. Place the marker to back-cap, combine with the coordinated stratagem to get an easier pincer, the applications are near endless! GSC players (all 27 of you) are eating good in the indexes.

Nothing stops you from using a token created by a battleline unit on a non-battleline unit and vice versa. Shenanigans abound!

I just reread the rule and you're absolutely right. The mechanic doesn't require you to keep track of which token was "created" by which destroyed unit. You just put down tokens, and then choose which tokens that "survive" bring back which unit. So really, the "blips" from 9th didn't go anywhere. You're still lining the battlefield with mystery boxes that could have anything pop out.

The benefit of them gunning down your ambush is that they waste their shooting on that and then you just set it back up for them to have to deal with again while you sweep the rest of your forces up.

I used to work landscaping, and someone I knew hired me specifically to dig a 4 foot deep trench along their back wall so they could poison the roots of their neighbours trees that were spreading under into his yard. One of the most petty things I’ve personally seen, and one of the most useless feeling projects in a job that already felt like I was doing nothing worthwhile. He did also give me a free water bottle though, so that was a plus

I think they can come back if you touch the marker as an opponent. They don't disappear, the units just stay in cult ambush. So if you get to place another marker later in the game you can bring the unit back. I love it.

@@MrShukaku1991 That won't work, because each time a unit is destroyed, you have to roll to see if it can come back in cult ambush before you place the tokens. Battleline units autopass it, but everything else still has to roll. Since I doubt that Jackals will be a battleline unit, that means that if the 10 man Jackal squad gets wiped, and you fail to roll a 4+, that unit of Jackals isn't coming back, regardless of how many other destroyed Neophyte squads you have.

i cant tell if these rules are genuinly insane, or not that good getting ALL your battleline units back, and a 50/50 chance at getting your non battleline back is insane, but it happens on like a 2 turn delay BUT, despite the delay, you are getting all your units back, and effectivly deepstriking in the opponents movement phase, meaning you have basically garenteed charges off them when it comes back to your turn and the datasheets and stratagems seem fantastic as well, the weapons are strong, and the extra rules they have are great overall GSC got a real belter of a teaser also iv only really just realised, heavy stubbers got a MASSIVE buff, they are currently 3 shots at 4/0/1 heavy (so -1 to hit on movement) new heavy stubbers are 3 shots at4/0/1 RAPID FIRE 3, meaning not only do they NOT get the -1 to hit on movement now, but in half range they are 6 shots moving into half range and shooting a stubber has gone from 1 hit on avg, to 3, they are LITERALLY 3 times as good also, obligatory admech gripe random underhive GSC dudes have as good armour and are as good at shooting as cybernetically enhanced aimbot skitari (and the army rules which support them are like 10 times better)

At first read, it seems broken but : -neophyte lose shotgun, meaning even with the +1 to wound majority of your gun is 4+/4+. Seismic canon is trash now hitting on 5. Even with sustained hit you don’t kill 5 marines. - they come back at the end of the next reinforcement step of your opponent, giving him a mouvement phase to destroy your token. -tunnel crawler seems only good with flammers Waiting for the acolyte, but im pretty sure 100 neophyte build is dead

You can play safe with your markers too. They only have to be outside 9" of enemy units, so you could lay them safe behind your lines to guarantee the ambush.

This is insane. If you can bring back 700-800 points in a 2000 point game (Which wouldn't be hard) Then you have effectively taken a 2800~ point list against your opponents 2000 point list. It makes it near impossible to balance any unit that has the Cult Ambush rule because they will have to be way over costed for what they do because of the possibility that you're going to get 2 of them for the price of 1

I disagree it’s a nightmare it balance, it kind of seems pretty easy honestly. You have a 100% increase in effectiveness from a battleline unit and you can guarantee getting it back probably at least once, so double it’s points, like 12 points a model or so for the acolytes, and then for non-battleline units 1.5 times it’s price as they have a 50% to double in effectiveness.

@@Unknown-qj9sm While I kinda agree that under normal circumstances, a points boost would make sense. But these guys.. If they survive a round of shooting or melee, they are barely hanging on. They can "only" block or take the objective out of numbers, nothing else. Their damage potential got shot down hard. It says a lot when the grenade launcher by the looks of it, appears to be the best weapon of choice. Anything above 7 points per model without upgrades will completely ruin the army on the baseline.

I really like these respawn rules that are being added for Horde armies, it makes them more thematic. Fast armies GSC are gonna need to be conservative with their ambush tokens, but woof slow armies like DG are gonne have a ruff time deleting the tokens, but they could move to get line of sight on the arriving GSC units at least, would be interesting to learn to play against and have to internalize seeing the tokens as actual units if you cant get within range as potential targets

Honestly as Death Guard I would basically ignore trying to get the tokens. Way I see it, the best option you have is to get to objectives and sit on them, force the cultists to come and engage you. The issue I foresee is a canny opponent will just start going for local superiority on one objective after another. It is possible they might not be able to push you off fast enough to make the points difference though.

@@Istalrison Since it happens on enemy reserves (FAQ for priority of ressurection vs deepstrike) you would start at shooting. Shooting phase, kill a unit/token placed. Say 9" charge, kill 2nd unit/token consolidate closer. GSC turn moves to engagement shoots charges fights and no units diehl. Your turn fall back if you even can closer. 21" from where you shot from to tag that token. Your closest unit will be bogged down by every other unit stopping you with too many bodies to shoot through. It gets much easier the closer the blips are put to the frontlines or with a very mobile army but it will be tough to tag them consistently which is what you need.

I love* how not only are GSC by far the best army for bringing back the dead, but that for however much the wargear costs, you can straight up STEAL the datasheet ability off of Necron Warriors wholesale on your basic battleline unit, ON TOP of getting CP back with them and the fact they always come back via cult ambush. That really makes me feel like they do NOT want people to bother even playing Necrons anymore. *Oh did I say love? I mean absolutely loathe and find utterly disgusting.

i actually realised i really dislike the new heavy rule the way they have implemented it SOUNDS like a buff over the current heavy, but in actuality basically all heavy weapons are actually getting a nerf because of how the rule functions and their stats have been changed to compensate because its no longer -1 to hit on movement, but +1 to hit on staying still, with the ballistic skill knocked down to compensate, it means that units with heavy guns dont benifit at all from +1 to hit effects, because they already have it, but they still suffer from -1 to hit effects, and because of their compensated lower BS, they suffer MORE then non heavy weapons from -1 to hit
