I watch this video for two reasons: to hear the incomparable Gene Watson's voice and to gaze at the very beautiful Rhonda Vincent.
The range and depth of Gene Watsons vocality , both tenor and baritone, is magnificent.Coutry music weaves traditional and contemporary instruments which form wonderful melodic lines. These combine with lyrical storytelling which are both down to earth and transcendent.

Ol' Gene can sure sing some true country can't he!?!?! To all you young aspiring country artists: when you are looking for a sound you should pay attention to these old songs... this sound right here in this very video is what is missing from today's "so called" country music.. If you ask me they are making country music today for people who don't like country music! They took the country out of country and are releasing pop songs and labeling it country. They needed something that was already established with a market to push their garbage. There are millions out there who still long for the true sound!! It isn't just us folks well over 40 either. This last past year I went to see two concerts, Don Williams, and Merle Haggard- Both shows were PACKED, and I did see some gray hair in there, but what surprised me the most is the number of young people there!! At Hag's show I saw teenagers wearing Merle Haggard T-shirts! And at Don Williams show I was seated next to a young couple (in their early 20s) who had flown in all the way from Canada just to see Don! Back in the mid 90's is when I finally realized Country radio had lost it's mind... when they stopped playing George Jones. It's been downhill ever since.
@gerjoedev514110 жыл бұрын
Wow, I couldn't have said it better myself. George Strait and Alan Jackson said it perfectly in, "Murder on Music Row". The "suits who run Nashville" sure have killed Country Music. You are so right about there being so many fans out here who long for the "Country Music" that we grew up hearing and there are so many of the legends who still sound great. My husband and I go to concerts whenever any of them are appearing within driving distance to New Jersey. You are right, the shows sell out and yes, there are folks there of all ages. Recently, we have seen Travis Tritt, Bill Anderson, Gene Watson, Mickey Gilley and Don Williams. Their shows have all been sold-out performances and their CDs are selling at the shows. The only country radio we listen to now is Willie's Place because they play the best "Country Music" ever.
@KLUNKET10 жыл бұрын
GerJoe Dev Thanks for the kind comment. In 2013 I drove several hundred miles to go and see the late great "Noble" Ray Price in concert for the gazzilionth time lol. I knew that because he was losing his battle with cancer this would be the last opportunity I would have to hear him live... He was skin and bones and just looked so weak. Ray always stood at his concerts, but at this one he needed assistance getting out onto the stage and immediately sat on a stool. He looked so tired. But when he opened his mouth and sang his songs it was strong, and sounded like pure gold. He talked a little about his condition but added "for as long as I can do it, I will come out here and sing for you folks, I love you all". When he said it, you believed it! You knew that for him to push himself when he was that sick to come out and sing for the folks was nothing but pure love for his fans, and the music. He talked about his excitement for his new album and said he poured his heart and soul into it. During the show he did an on stage interview with one of the DJ's. They asked him what keeps him going and he said "everyone of my shows is filled with people who love country music and are starving to death for it... and by God I'm going to keep giving it to them for as long as I can"! After the show despite how sick he was, and how exhausting it must have been for him with stage 4 pancreatic cancer- he sat outside in the lobby meeting and signing autographs for every single person who wanted one. It made me think, that is what country music has lost... the love and dedication for it. It's turned into a "big money" racket. Do you think most of todays performers would show that kind of dedication and love? It just doesn't seem to be there anymore.

@Gene Watson your catalog is so extensive and if I had to pick a favorite, it would take forever. When I was a child, I got a mickey mouse record player for Christmas. I threw the Disney record away that came with it and snuck into my mother's records and pulled out the Gene Watson record. I played it over and over. Such an amazing vocal and song writing talent.

Love this song. Thank you for being one of the best country singers. This is true country. What happen to country music. I will never listen to new country music again. Their will never be any as great as gene Watson and George Jones.

The little smiles and looks on Rhonda's face make this really special. She's cute and really cares for Gene.

thank you jim asendorf, my Mother wrote that song in 1975 and sent it to Nashville, TN to Curly Putnam, it layed around in a box for approx 3 years; Gene Watson came by his office one day and was looking for some songs; they pulled this song outta the box; polished it up, recorded it; went to #3 on Bill Board; and as they say, "the rest is history"

darn!! I bet your mother made lots of money with that song. 50% of everything goes to the writer of the song.

As per Wikipedia - the writer is Jim Rushing. Don't know your Mum's name but her idea seems to have been stolen ...

If you have small drafts of the song or any evidence of your Mom writing that song, it can be contested as to who the copyright belongs to. If she was robbed of that song, she can sue the label that released it and get a huge settlement . An entertainment lawyer can help you. But you have to look for evidence proving that it was her original song. I used to write songs in the 90's . And I contacted the copyright office once on what I could do if my song was stolen. That's what they told me. To keep little drafts of the song as you went along writing it. Only titles to a song cannot be copyrighted.

Yes, the greedy steal songs here in Nashville. I asked a friend of mine who at one time was an executive at Capitol and United Artists why this happens and his answer wasn't convincing to me. One of the biggest songs to be recorded here was stolen from an uncle according to a female acquaintance of mine. My question would be, "Does money trump honesty"?

There used to be a time when people would just hand an artist a song to review over the fence .so to speak. Now it has become a world of greed and corruption just like everything else here in the US. I wrote songs for 9 years received a couple of minor awards in Nashville.
