Genghis Khan, the founder of the Mongol Empire, had a wide and long-lasting impact on civilisations in both the East and the West, the repercussions of which can still be felt today.
In the year 1162, between, modern-day Mongolia and Siberia, a ruthless leader and great conqueror was born. The King of Kings, a brutal barbarian and the founder of the largest connected land empire the world has ever seen, his name, Genghis Kahn! Genghis together with his sons and grandsons went to war on an immense scale, in only 25 years the Mongol army conquered more territory than the Romans had done in 400. By the time of his death in 1227, the Mongol empire stretched from the Pacific Ocean to the Caspian Sea. Encompassing around 10 million square miles the empire was vast, measuring the same size as the African continent, and larger than the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean Islands combined. And what’s more remarkable is he was able to achieve this with around 100,000 men, making Genghis Kahn one of the most successful military commanders the world has ever known.

Especially as someone who lived on the steppe for a good amount of time, I find it amazing just how multi-faceted Chinggis Khan really was. A product of his time, born in the lowest of circumstances to raise an empire. A butcher of millions yet one who formed a society with (relative) freedom and tolerance, but also demanding loyalty and subservience or the worst of fates. A man that changed the world forever, impacted the nations he conquered or vasselated (such as my home, Korea) but also brought along many reforms, cultural and scientific advancements due to the intermingling of cultures within the Mongol Empire. I can't honestly call him evil or good, in the time he lived in, in the world he knew, he was given no mercy, and so he didn't offer it either.

Actually Assassin's Creed based on Hasan Sabbah. He train his underlings and became a power in Anatolia. He threatened kings and sultans over years and made profit from assassinating. He threatened a Mongol leader "Hüdagû", then Mongols sieged his castle (Alamut Castle) and killed everyone there. Also Hasan Sabbah had one of the biggest library in those days, Mongols burnt all those books and scrolls. It's pretty interesting years to read. I recommend you to read Alamut from Vladimir Bartol. It was combined some fiction and historical facts.

Just imagine how difficult it was to actually conquer that much land and try to keep most of it under your rule. There were no long range communication, no smart phones, fully accurate world maps and no transport faster than a horse. If you wanted to send some information from east to west people had to carry that information on horseback for hundreds-thousands of miles which would take ages! By the time news of civil unrest in a tribe got to you it was probably already over and people slaughtered. You would need to have hundreds of trusted generals in every area to keep rule under your name, trying to stand out so they can be rewarded for their talents.

Good narration, one minor thing I feel like to point out is that, the dynasty that had its capital in Beijing in the 1200s, were not an ethnic Chinese dynastic, they were Jurchens, cousins to the Mongols, descendants of an earlier invasion of Song Dynasty China in the 1100s. China was spilt between the ethnic Jurchen Jinn and ethnic Chinese Song dynasties. Had China been unified when the Mongols came, things might have turned out differently. I for one wouldn't have existed.

All the biographies and documentaries about GK I've seen highlighted his setbacks where he lost it all. But they all then seemed to skim over the details of how he was able to return bigger and stronger. For me, the rebound from failure to greatness is the most important part of the story. For example: how did he convince a whole tribe to follow him after he had become a nobody. Why would she agree to marry a nobody? And after a khan gave him a replacement army after he lost his own, how did he later take over that Khan's kingdom.

main original source of GK's biography come from the text so called secret history of Mongols I read it a few times but none of those asked details mentioned specifically. Maybe it is because no one knows for sure the details. (the secret history of Mongols is believed to be written after GK's death).I guess the only way we can know that detail is to infer that detail from the GK's deeds and characters. My guess is GK's determinism, loyal and fairness to friend and family, shrewdness, humanity, and charisma made it possible to persuade people even when he was nobody. Apparently he was a man of characters.
