No other actor in the world could have played the character of Luke. Tony Geary's character was never intended to stick around so he was deliberately written to be a very despicable human being. TG took the role of a temporary, flat, throw away character and developed a multi-dimensional, compelling character oozing with charisma so intense that he managed to get the whole world to fall in love with the man after witnessing him rape a woman he claimed to love. I know a lot of people today think the whole Luke and Laura story was terrible because of the way it began. Well, yeah, it was never supposed to be a love story. No one back then thought that the rape was sexy or seductive or any of that. We just saw the two characters had undeniable chemistry and everyone wanted them on screen together. It's also interesting to note that Tony Geary wasn't the typical handsome Hollywood leading man type either. Nothing should have made us root for Luke and Laura back then. Tony Geary cast a spell over us all. He and Genie Francis did something impossible which was why it was so magical.

Not to get Luke & Laura fans on my back. I agree Geary's acting turned the character into someone very special. And Genie and TG had/have a wonderful chemistry. But Luke did rape Laura. Meanwhile, Gloria Monty, who did great things for GH, tried to sell the rape as a seduction. You had fans of the show at events which Geary was a part of shouting "rape me, Luke." Very odd, I think. Even Tony Geary expressed discomfort. So, I disagree with your statement that people didn't see the rape as sexy or seductive. I think they wanted to believe the seduction lie or decided it's "only TV" and Genie/Tony are great together. Fast forward to the late 90s and the show finally recognized the fact he raped her. Which brought on the wrath of many Luke & Laura fans. I think when the rape occurred, the show was advancing a dangerous notion. We could see that Laura had some underlying feelings towards Luke. Were we supposed to believe that even though she said "no" while he forced himself on her, that she really meant "yes?" and thus not see the rape for what it was? (especially considering what occurred between them in the following months) Isn't that the excuse/defense some rapists use even today? I agree the whole Luke/Laura storyline up to the point where she disappeared in the fog was unlike storylines that had been on soaps previously. IF you subtracted the rape from it all, they could be seen as magical. Both Tony Geary and Genie Francis were/are wonderful. I've been a Genie/Laura fan since her first scene on GH. But I appreciated the late 90s storyline.

Back then GH was on the verge of being cancelled so no one expected to be around very long. Originally they were going to kill Luke off but the whole Luke and Laura thing caused their ratings to skyrocket so they killed off Roy instead. They had to find a way to get them together because their chemistry is what made that show.

Without "Night At The Disco" I don't think L&L would have exploded into tv's most loved couple of all time. As sick as it may have been, it worked on all levels. Keep in mind all though we started out rooting for Laura & Scotty, we quickly wanted Luke to get his Laura at all costs. We were all surprised when it went dowm. As Genie once said....Gloria certainly knew how to get ppls attention!!!

It pisses me off that when you look L&L up on youtube all the vid's seem to start with that terrible night at the disco. That's NOT when the love story started. We wanted them together before that night. We already knew how deeply in love Luke was, and by the time the "Night at the disco" happened we knew that Laura had fallen for Luke. I remember saying to my Mom....When are they going to put L&L together?! Looking back I know how bad it looks to those who were not around to see the beginning and as Genie said women who had been raped must have been horrified. But my Lord they had such intense chemistry from the get go. But alas we did not have the technology that we have today, and often soap's had to reuse film. Therefore a LOT of the episodes were lost or taped over. There are so many moments I still remember between them (Before the rape), that we will never see again.

I watched every episode as it aired originally and I lived for it. I remember the very 1st day Genie showed up in Port Charles as Laura Vining. This was my best memories I had as a impressionable young girl. 3:00 raced home from school like the rest of the world. Her acting was phenomenal. Tony Geary was able to somehow make her better and that seemed impossible. It was magic. I’m glad I was young and have these beautiful memories because of them both. Another beautiful moment that struck me was the scene in this video around 26 minutes where Laura is writing a letter to her husband. Hand Writing!! No computers, cell phones and awful text messages. You know she was a teenager at the time and TG is 14 years older then her? It was pure acting and not a bit of love or sex between them. Genie was even interviewed and talked about how much older TG was.. one of the reasons he didn't want to work with her when she came back to the show. Plus TG is rumored, heavily, to be gay. Sure they rode the popularity of their characters for decades, but TG had absolutely no interest in Genie romantically or sexually.

I remember seeing General Hospital on the TV , I am from the UK living in Florida and honestly was totally bored with this ,was full of perfect looking people ,seamed like an advert ! It kills me that there is not a lot of episodes posted BEFORE "Night at the disco". So many amazing glances, stares, and flirting between them before it all exploded that night. Which is why we accepted what happened. I'm glad your not judging us like so many others from your generation. We already knew Laura had fallen for Luke, and their connection was so intense. But soap Operas did not have the budget that evening tv had. So they would tape over film to save money. Of course when night at the disco happened GH got a huge budget LOL!! The whole Country was tuning in. In Palm Bch County Fl, the school board gave up and canceled afternoon classes during the 2 day wedding, because over half the staffs were calling out sick and students were skipping school/classes. Store front marques changed their signs to acknowledge L&L!!!! You would have been blown away. It was soooo crazy.

We went to a small private Christian school where our Dad was the principal and my 13yo Seester and I had to wait for him for an hour or so after school to get home. No VCR then and we missed GH often. But we convinced our Dad to run us home right after school on the 16th of November 1981 so we could see the wedding. My Seester and I were giggling when he drove away to get back to the school to finish the day and lock-up. We were both "sick" the next day. We didn't want to miss a thing. It happened, and all of a sudden we were rooting for Luke and Laura in spite of ourselves. Laura had a tough life, Luke had a very very tough life, and they had magic between them. By the time Laura realized that she was in way over her head in this scene, Luke was beyond help. I didn’t see the sheer terror in her eyes until I started watching these reruns. I do remember the look on Lukes face when he realized what he had done. Sheer horror. Weird magic.

Gloria Monty baby!! She was considered the BEST producer on broadway. They were going to cancel GH but did not want it to go off in disgrace. So they asked Gloria if she could come get the ratings up a bit before they pulled the show. She called her buddy Tony Geary and he said I don't like Soap Operas, she said....I don't either baby but were gonna change all that!! Even she was not prepared for the insanity that followed. Princess Di loved them and sent them Champayne from HER wedding with Congrats on their wedding cards LOL. So many movie stars wanted to be on the show (To many to mention, and many would get their start on GH because of L&L). Liz Taylor fell in love with Luke, and wanted in. Nobody could believe Liz wanted to be on a soap opera.

At about 53:11 Luke is waiting for the shoe to drop, but he knew already how Laura would react because she told him. This makes him look insensitive, almost as if he wants her to disown their love. He really should have punched the reporter asking Laura if she was Mrs. Baldwin. I mean he punched the guy in the hall. And you could tell she was traumatized and in shock.

Well, TG is happily retired in Amsterdam and has shown no desire to reprise Luke Spencer. GF/Laura is happily remarried to Kevin Collins. I read in an article that TG did not want Luke to ride off into the sunset with Laura. The rape/seduction spin always disturbed him as it did Genie Francis. He was never supposed to become a romantic leading man. The whole thing was just a big fluke! And it turned into a phenomenon!
