I forgot how many characters you are introduced to in this arc. I think long time watchers like myself and a bunch of others had a bit of an advantage here. When a lot of us started watching Naruto on Cartoon Network(Toonami) there seemed to always be re-runs on in between new episodes. I probably saw this entire arc half a dozen times before if was completely through! You'll get the names down, don't worry!

I mentioned previously that this was like a deadly verision of the Olympics and that comparison helps with explaining how small villiages compare to large villages. In general the nations with the biggest populations have the most athletes, and win the most medals at the Olympics. But smaller countries win gold medals too. The strength of an entire nation has little to do with how talented an individual from that nation is. A concept that confused me at 1st was that there are actually more than just 5 ninja villages. About 100 years ago there were only 5 ninja villages (the Leaf, Sand, Stone, Mist, and Cloud villages). But in recent years there have been several new ones like the sound village but the 5 original still have the largest number of ninjas. Smaller ninja villages need to keep the few ninja they have really strong to the big 5 won't think they are easy pickings; and each of the big 5 need to keep their overall strength at least as good as the others or they could be eliminated by eachother so the remaining big villages will have 1 less competitor to share power/ dominance with. Niinja villages are the military of their nations and weakness could lead to war. But they are also businesses; if world leaders see in these Chunin Exams that the number or quality of ninjas have gone down in a major village then they will stop hiring that village for the most important and expensive missions and give those missions to one of the original villages that is still strong. Finally it was stated earlier that it was a big deal and unusual that the 9 rookies in this episode got recommended for the Chunin Exams. This is supposed imply that 10 youngest people here are these 9 rookies and a certain short kid from the sand. Nobody ever seems to notice that Garra is the shortest member of his team because he is so intimidating! But Garra is not only the shortest but he is indeed the youngest and yet the older and taller boy on his team seem scared of him. This little boy is the one who went on a B rank mission without so much as a scratch!

Even though a small village can't stand up to one of the big 5, they almost certainly are considered proxies by one or another of the larger nations. So long as they are good business partners and allies they should be fine. Unless another larger nation starts a proxy fight or goes after them directly...

The Land of Waves escort would have been a B rank if the first two ninja they fought was the only battle they had, or if they'd fought more battles against other ninja of similar level to those two. Zabuza and Haku were Jonin level in strength and skill even though Haku was never a registered ninja, so the mission was A rank.
