Honestly it's more a case of him having good plans but constantly overestimating everyone else, so his calculations to barely lose and be able to retire peacefully end up being complete victories because his opponents (or even sometimes his supporters) ended up being way below his expectations in their intellectual prowess.

I actually watched a bit of this, then read the novels, and despite there being a seemingly pronounced focus on 'haha wow he's just accidentally getting so many W's', the series is way cooler if to dispense with those thoughts. Like, Wein isn't just good at ruling for plot reasons, or just because of dumb luck - he genuinely has an almost comprehensive understanding of feudal power systems, political philosophy, etc. - in one instance (and certainly more but this is an example) attributing his domestic actions to concepts which fall under 'popular sovereignty'; Wein does away with royal pretenses about their royal-ness and takes a very realistic and pragmatic attitude towards leadership. I love Realist Hero, but in terms of political drama, at least in my opinion, this series - especially in the novels - knocks it out of the water.

And if the 'good antagonists' are just cute girls how just fall into his harem thats a mark against him not for him... @@Youboremenow Okay, so I think it would be somewhat wrong to specifically state that 'x or y are antagonists to overcome' even though it can be presented that way, but with the semantics aside, I would say that while there are interesting rivalling entities with competing political and personal goals, take for example Caldmellia's organization on the small-scale, or the schism between the Empire and the Church of Levetia on the large-scale, generally speaking, the climax of each arc leads to a 'successful' outcome for Natra / Wein. However, on the other side, it's kind of important to understand that the story leans heavily into the large-scale political drama, past the scope of the individual - in a sense, both the Empire and the Church of Levetia serve as tentative allies/enemies, with Natra as a small nation sandwiched between the two, trying to expand their sphere of influence while not falling into ill-graces with the far larger nations that surround them. Basically, it leads to conflicts not being all-out 'You're the big evil, and no matter how strong you are, we at goodguy(tm) are going to stop you!' - Honestly it's hard to phrase the story in terms of the isekai-type plots which you talk about because it's not really comparable to the standard hero-centric story, the only thing I could really compare it to was Realist Hero. I guess to strictly answer your questions though: - But are there any notable antagonists that can match him? Depends on your definition of 'match him', if that means 'to present a threat that actively sets the protagonist back over the span of multiple arcs', then no, but if it's about what happens in arcs, and if the end result of the protagonist overcoming the antagonist doesn't immediately make the antagonist weak, then in my opinion, yes, there are credible and competent threats towards the protagonist. - Do they only appear to make the MC look cooler and smarter than the rest? No, it's politics. Everyone has their own aims, and everyone's aims can be deciphered with understanding. - Harem Question: Haven't seen a single 'cute girl' antagonist, and I haven't really seen a harem either, so no. I write terrible long-form responses, so I apologize for that.

Honestly, just because why not, let me explain what I think the main point of conflict is: Natra's Dillema Natra is a small nation resting upon a barren northern land - not particularly prosperous. Natra for reasons of national prosperity (and whatever Wein's somewhat irrelevant personal reasons are) seeks to expand it's prosperity and influence while maintaining national sovereignty and integrity. The two obstacles to this expansion are the Empire to the East, a far far larger and more powerful nation (empire of states), and the nations united underneath the Church of Levetia to the West, a theological union of nations of similar to slightly larger territorial size when compared to Natra, however, far more prosperous. The Empire and the Church share a highly strained relationship, due to long-standing ideological conflicts between the two, and Natra lies between the two. Natra - following some early domestic improvements, and the all-around display of national competence - becomes a focus for both spheres in regards to influence, each side wishing to pull Natra into their sphere of influence, and out of the other's. However, from the standpoint of Natra, there are drawbacks to joining both spheres in full. Joining the East would anger the local population that worships Levetia - Natra was originally founded by people that stemmed from the origins of the religion, and while its presence is subdued, joining the 'barbaric East' would still likely incite significant discontent. Furthermore, joining the East would likely result in Natra becoming a dependant of the far larger empire, with almost no real say in affairs, and the independence / sovereignty of the territory would be at stake, as the empire would likely work either openly or in secret to integrate Natra as their newest territory - as they have done in the past. Not to mention that it would antagonize the West, and due to favourable geography, Natra's territories could become the host to conflict between the two spheres, as the West leads a holy crusade to 'free the Levetians of Natra from the clutches of the barbaric and oppressive East' (take that as a casus belli, if you'd like). Joining the West would place the local population of Flahm and other imperial sympethizers into a frenzy, with the already established cell of Flahm likely extending their actions into sabotage and subterfuge - for the Flahm are considered a slave caste by Levetia (It also must be said that Wein takes a particular liking to the Flahm, even if personal attitudes aren't too important). Furthermore, joining the West - even if Wein, or another member of government was to obtain the status of 'Holy Elite' - would likely result in a considerable reduction in Natra's sovereignty and independence, as it goes with any form of political union - not to mention that due to the theocratic nature of the union, it's systems of power have been skewed to allow some 'less-than-favourable' individuals to hold power, and permitting their interference wouldn't exactly be optimal. Not to mention that this would antagonize the East, and due to favourable geog... you get the point. Natra lies in the balance, and it has to somehow remain in the balance through the use and exploitation of both spheres. There is currently no way - and there likely won't be for a considerable amount of time - for Natra to face either side openly without sacrificing its own independence. The dillema that Natra faces, and the difficulties that it must endure in order to retain security in it's precarious position is - at least imo - the main point of conflict

Realist Hero has the problem of the writer ignoring pre-established rules for the sake of forcing events to go how he/she wants. Such as what'shisface getting in trouble for invading a country even though he did so because said country had invaded him and sent its army to assist a rebellion in his kingdom and so they were, y'know, *at war.* Which meant he did not break the law, the other kingdom did, yet he was the one being held responsible for literally no reason. And I mean literally, as in there was no reason given it's just being dumped on him and never explained beyond "It's illegal to invade a country". Unless, apparently, it's the kingdom of the protagonist... It reminds me of the main problem of Slave Harem Dungeon or whatever that story was called by Whatwizzers. I remember he needed to buy a slavegirl to save her from a scumbag. The scumbag lied about her price and said she was worth fifty gold coins. The audience was like "Oh, good thing he got that storage ring that was outright stated to be worth no less than fifty gold coins" aaaand....eh didn't try to trade for it. He had reward money and some other stuff and things he sold for money, but the owner refused to sell her...which was previously established to be illegal *and the town's culture revolves around taking advantage of that fact* but it was accepted by the characters anyway with no regard to anything established.

What we have here ladies and gentlemen is and MC who possess what i have dubbed the " GOMEZ ADDAMS" EFFECT he's more than capable both intelectually and well verse in a plethora of skills to the degree of a prodigy but personality wise is a kazuma from konosuba who doesnt want to be king so he goes full on lelouch and tries to set the kingdom up for sell but fails but divine karmic irony suceeds flawlessly much to his chagrin. His solution: he should stop whining and start teaching his sister the necesary skillset to rule so he can appoint her his succesor and retire, its a lot easier than all unnecesary scheming.
