2 striking things I noticed in this video which I had watched before at an earlier time. However for the first time I noticed that when baby kentaro urinated, the mother Genki drank it.I am wondering does anybody have any knowledge on whether this is a common practice. The other thing which I had noticed before when I watched this video earlier was how similar in some habits these gorillas are to humans. Did you notice how Genki patted and soothed baby kentaro after he was startled by that drop kick from a jealous Gentaro. Think of how many times you see a human mother patting a fretful baby or soothing it to go to sleep. So awesome. Look at how understanding Genki is ( similar to any human mother) as she tries to play with Gentaro and give him some attention while holding the newborn. Gentaro's behavior is just like any only child whose status is now being displaced by another little being.The only difference is he's especially aggressive to make sure his point is heard lol.

Aggs Perez, I often wondered the same (Urine drinking) so, I looked it up. Here is what I found....... ****** "There are three feeding behaviors sometimes observed in gorillas in human care that can bother visitors. These behaviors are natural, though not to humans. They are regurgitation and reingestion, coprophagy (eating feces) and urine drinking. Regurgitation and reingestion involves an animal regurgitating some of its food and re-eating it. Biologists do not entirely understand why gorillas exhibit this behavior in human care. A few ideas include starch or sugar content, mineral recapture or the food tasting good. Provision of forage foods, increased smaller feedings and providing browse seem to reduce this behavior in some individuals. Coprophagy is seen in the wild and is defined as the eating of feces. Gorillas do not have very efficient digestive systems for a high fiber diet, so unprocessed food can be found in their feces. Coprophagy allows an animal to utilize this food. Similarly, urine drinking might be explained as the recollection of minerals."****** ~~ So, I guess drinking urine to Gorillas helps them get essential minerals they need in digestion. Just like eating feces, to them, its not gross as it is to humans. As similar as Gorillas are to us, especially sharing emotional feelings/ behaviors, their bodies require a much different balance of foodsand minerals. Also, looks like Genki rather drink urine then wear it! LOL! Hope this helps! As I said, I also wanted to understand this too. PLEASE be safe and take care. ;-) ALSO, yes, it is adorable how Genki soothe's Kintaro, patting, as we do. Gentaro, also like any human child who would rather get negative attention rather then none. No one likes to be replaced. This is hard for any soul, human & Ape as well. It's sad to lose Mom's affection and focus and Gentaro did struggle trying to share his Mommy with Baby Kintaro. But, I always thought Gentaro was such a sweet and sensitive soul. Imagine having all the Keepers doting on you for 10 months, then a grateful Mom having her Baby Boy back to now NOT being the only one. I think anyone would be jealous and sad about sharing all that love that was once all your's! ;-)

Because I once read about baby's urinate as medicine for treating skin disease with fresh mashed herbs....yes. There are some special minerals which the mother might needs them while she was breastfeeding,that might need a lot of nutrition to support the baby as well as herself. Scientist could find out this.

The life was never the same after Kintaro. Gentaro had probably the toughest whole year missing the attention from him mom after being the only child for 7 years. But look now. He got his best friend ever ! Enjoy every single moment with the family and Ms. Hina ( she is a part of family ) until you will be all grown up and start your own family. Learn how to love, care and protect the family.

A mother nursing a new born baby is not a idle being, she is dedicated to the most honourable task, she cannot be rewarded by anyone but she is thankful and appreciated by the whole universe.

Lol yeah, but most animals with helpless infants do that. Canines, felines, marsupials, etc. It's an instinct to keep the nest and environment clean. Still not super comfortable to watch, though! But I still love watching all these videos. Genki is such a good mama
