September 10th, 2016. Undefeated Unified Middleweight Champion, the powerhouse Gennady “GGG” Golovkin defends his IBO, IBF and WBC Middleweight titles against the highly skilled reigning IBF World Welterweight Champion Kell “Special K” Brook.
Going into the fight, both fighters were undefeated; Golovkin was 35(33)-0 while Brook was 36(25)-0.
Kell Brook moved up 2 weight divisions from Welterweight to face Golovkin, in a move inspired by his fellow Briton Amir Khan who moved up to take on Canelo Alvarez earlier in the year, challenging for the WBC, The Ring and Lineal Middleweight titles.
There were a few other instances in the past where a Welterweight moves up to fight a reigning World Middleweight Champion;
1) Mike Twin Sullivan vs Stanley Ketchel (1908)
2) Mickey Walker vs Harry Greb (1925)
3) Henry Armstrong vs Cerefino Garcia (1938)
4) Kid Gavilan vs Carl Bobo Olsen (1954)
5) Carmen Basilio vs Sugar Ray Robinson (1957)
6) Emile Griffith vs Dick Tiger (1966)
7) Emile Griffith vs Carlos Monzon (1971)
8) Jose Napoles vs Carlos Monzon (1974)
9) Thomas Hearns vs Marvin Hagler (1984)
10) Sugar Ray Leonard vs Marvin Hagler (1987)
Note that some of these bouts in the list had rematches as well - No. 3, 5, 6 & 7. More recent examples would be Miguel Cotto vs Sergio Martinez (2014) and of course, Canelo Alvarez vs Amir Khan (2016). Thus, in the year 2016 Brook was the 2nd British fighter to move up 2 divisions to challenge for a World Middleweight title. Both Brook and Khan were highly praised for their courageous moves.
Despite being the naturally smaller fighter, Brook more than gave a good account of himself against the powerful GGG and had his share of moments by landing significant blows throughout the fight (notably in the 2nd round) despite being ultimately overwhelmed by the bigger, stronger Golovkin. Kell Brook’s right eye was already swollen in the first round from a GGG left hook, but in just about every instance that he was hurt, Special K comes back with his own rallies.
Brook had some of his best moments in the 2nd and 3rd rounds where he landed a number of clean shots and combinations that shook GGG. And as a whole, it was an exciting fight with both fighters having their share of great moments. It is interesting to note that Brook gave Golovkin a surprisingly hard fight and landed many clean shots on GGG. The undefeated IBF Welterweight World champion had probably given Golovkin his hardest fight since Martin Murray in 2015.
However in March 2017, Daniel Jacobs became first fighter in nearly 9 years to last the distance against Golovkin en route to losing a disputed UD. Jacobs surpassed Brooks in terms of being Golovkin’s hardest fight as he took the Middleweight Marauder to the final bell. Since June 2008, all 23 of GGG’s opponents have been knocked out.
4 months ago in May 2016, Amir Khan jumped 2 weight classes and put up a great effort against Canelo Alvarez using his amazing speed and boxing skills. But he ultimately succumbed to the greater power and natural size advantage of Alvarez, who finished him in the 6th round with a thunderous right hand named Knockout of the Year 2016 by Ring Magazine.
On September 16th 2017, the Ultimate Middleweight Fight between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez will finally take place after a number of failed negotiations which included Canelo’s decision to vacate the WBC Middleweight strap in May 2016 when GGG was his mandatory. The WBC proceeded to award its title to GGG.
All of Golovkin’s belts - IBO, IBF, WBA & WBC World Middleweight Titles will be on the line. In Canelo’s last fight, he dominated fellow Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. en route to a lopsided UD victory. For GGG, he won a disputed UD against “The Miracle Man” Daniel Jacobs, maintaining his undefeated record.
Golovkin-Alvarez is definitely one of the most anticipated fights in recent years and potentially one of the best fights as well as a candidate for Fight of the Year in 2017!
Who do you think wins? Will Canelo put a dent into GGG’s undefeated record or will Golovkin hand the Mexican superstar his 2nd defeat since his one sided loss to defensive wizard Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in September 2013?

Despite the check weight process you really think Kell comes in at 170 for welterweight fights? Absolutely no way. He has said himself he is pretty drained at welter. What you say sort of implies that GGG would come in at Light Heavy then on fight night. I dont believe that either.

+Ray Valle Eh. No. Brook is the IBF champ. The IBF mandates that their belt holders cannot weigh more than 10 pounds above the contracted weight limit the day after the weigh in. Brook doesn't come in at 170. Not even close. He isn't even ALLOWED to weigh over 157 pounds the day of the fight when he's defending his belt.

No, it's not. Floyd fight a MUCH bigger and stronger man in Canelo and OUTCLASSED him. Roy Jones Jr fought a much bigger and stronger man in John Ruiz and OUTCLASSED him. At the end of the day it's skills that pays the bills. If Brook was bigger his SKILLS wouldn't have allowed him to beat GGG. He would've last longer but around the 9 round he's was going to get stopped. And Porter is big and strong but in terms of skill he's a B fighter

Not true...Canelo himself wanted to take that fight. He made his own bed by having to drop weight. He was the B-side. Besides Canelo ballooned up to his normal weight and was 170 pounds on the day of the fight. I actually like Canelo. He's gifted moreso than most Mexican fighters. He throws beautiful combinations, can shoot the jab, he's learned how to bob and weave(see Trout fight) and besides GGG or Spence is the most devastating body puncher in boxing(see Kirkland fight) and he's strong as an oxe. In fact he has an American style and you can tell he studied those slick African-American boxers. But Floyd was once in 20 years. The best since Sweet P and slightly better. Floyd just couldn't be hit, supreme ring generalship, arguably the greatest IQ in boxing history, a nearly impregnable defense fortified with the Mayweather shell, inhuman stamina, an uncanny 72 inch reach, iconic counter puncher, supreme twitch fibers, and he mastered Ali's stick and move. If Floyd were 170 he would've knocked Saul out let's be serious. He outclassed the young bull. Peace.

Just as GGG have promised, a drama show! Golovkin intentionally fought a reckless fight when he's confident that his opponent is either less skillful, or physically not as strong, it involves taking certain amount of risks because we all know that anything can happen in the ring, but he did this to please his fans and the crowd. Fans of Kell Brook can always argue that at least Kell dished out more than a few good shots at Golovkin, but I'm afraid that's mostly the result of Golovkin's conscious decision to fight a street fight with Kell Brook.

deepblue1776 naw he started adding pressure after Brook was tagging his ass. If Brook was a LEGIT middle weight he could have beat triple ggg he had the skill to do it. it showed in this fight exactly what Floyd says, he a straight up and down fighter just with power.

yeah ggg had zero respect for kell's power. kell's a top fighter so of course he landed on him, but ggg gave no fucks about those shots.

@@reidos8992 Are you all an idiot? If Triple G's opponent don't fight back then that's NOT a challenge to him so in short an easy fight. Just because an opponent like Kell brook connect his punch it doesn't mean he can beat Triple G dumbass. It's called boxing for a reason because you fight each other until someone goes down or give up.

Makes me wonder why Triple G fought with the jab against Canelo. Seems like Canelo was too much for Triple G so instead of trying to win the fight, Triple G was trying to survive. Canelo is a heck of a boxer no doubt about it. Triple G being the naturally bigger guy was not able to impose himself on Canelo and that's just impressive on Canelo. No doubt Canelo is pound for pound at the moment, no one can touch him.

This is why boxing has weight divisions. You can't just move up two weight classes against a known banger and expect to get away with it. Brook landed some great shots every round but Golovkin just ate them and walked right through it. Jacobs and Canelo took notes though. The uppercut is especially a good weapon against Golovkin.

Gennady is very, very strong even for his size. Those Kazakhs are naturally hard and tough! And on top of it, this one Kazakh trains like an animal. I don't know what Brook was thinking... This wasn't worth the risk.
