Genocyber the OVA, was so controversial during the 1990s, I'm not kidding, nor trolling around, it happened. This OST Music was the kind of thing that inspired Teen Titans (2003-2006)
@thematt5235 жыл бұрын
Jon Spinac I mean, it is ludicrously violent and mean-spirited, and features child molestation and child murder. And all with a pointless, nihilistic message about how irredeemable humanity is. Regardless of what you think about it quality-wise, that’s not exactly a thing 90s parents would approve of their kids watching.
@thecactussword43044 жыл бұрын
@@thematt523 Really? I interpreted the message as being one of how abuse and mistreatment of your fellow man sews seeds of your own demise. Elaine and Diana are treated like shit for most of lives, and both of them wind up destroying the world (Well, Elaine *in* Diana's body does, anyway.) simply because, at that point, everyone at the top of society doesn't give a shit about making the world a better place. This happens again in episode 3, albeit in a much more subtle way. When the final episode ends, panning up from the ruins of Arc De Grande, the city that treated any citizen below the highest echelons of society like animals to be used and mindlessly left out to die, all the way out to space... you hear the sound of a baby crying, as its mother comforts it. The first act of human kindness most of us receive, and one we all deserve. The Genocyber itself is a metaphor for the nameless, uncontrollable "mob" that kickstarts a revolution: the part of the human spirit that yearns to be freed from whatever bondages bind it. My point is, a lotta people just boil Genocyber down to it's heavy themes relating to how awful modern society is, without realizing its message of rising above the system, and becoming *better* than your environment is arguably just as prevalent.

Did... did you even read what I wrote?
@thematt5233 жыл бұрын
@@thecactussword4304 I did, but I feel you’re overthinking. If anything, the third episode is the LEAST subtle. This metaphor would make sense if Genocyber was more explicitly some self-proclaimed corrective to society (like Thanos) or the literal embodiment of human anger (like monsters in the Witcher). But...it’s not. It’s an immortal, omnipotent supernatural freak, created by some cruel scientists who made it because...why not? Nobody really rises above anything. These places are actually doing relatively fine. They’re places of cruelty and injustice, but they seem stable. There’s no indication that society is going to collapse if left to their own devices. Just that “the world needs to die”. Everyone in the world dies not because they were hoisted by their own petard in some sense of dramatic irony. It’s just a nihilistic, misanthropic message of “the world is filled with death and cruelty, so let’s just kill them all.” Whatever little bits of humanity are redeemable died along with everyone. I mean, even the couple at the end of the Ark de Grande are probably going to die. They are clearly hundreds of miles away from any form of civilization, and that’s if there actually ARE other people left on the Earth.

Really, though, what I hate is when you see these violent OVAs from the 80's and 90's, but they just waste any potential they might have had. Angel Cop could have been a hard-hitting conspiracy anime with some actual social commentary, not a blood/gore fest with a weirdo transvestite-like American psycho Brigette Nielsen lookalike with one tit hanging out as our main villain.
@ayylmao5758 жыл бұрын
>Removing the majority of the gore No, that's a fucking bad idea, you can still have substance and have gore at the same time, and it wouldn't be Genocyber if it didn't have ludicrous violence.
@VaatiOfDarkness8 жыл бұрын
I guess if they had managed to focus on a more coherent narrative (and no stupid time skips...) I might have enjoyed it more. I mean, I love Akira despite some rather gruesome visuals (well, mostly Tetsuo's mutation), but Genocyber was a little too heavy on the gore and too little on any...substance to be enjoyable. It wasn't even enjoyably bad aka Angel Cop, which at least had hilarious swearing. "You crazy self-righteous fucking lunatic!" "Fuck and PISS!" "Alright, buttfuck, that's enough speech making for now!" And also, Angel towards the end says: "If this is justice, then I'M A BANANA!"

Ayy Lmao I want to like the OVA more but idk... I thought the plot was confusing and didn't make any sense most of the time. The setting and initial idea is cool though so that could have been solved with some better world building.... I'm not opposed to gore but the violence in Genocyber hit a level that was too much for me. I didn't disturb me but it was so senseless to the point that I couldn't have fun with it. I thought the animation could have been better too. A lot of the fight scenes were very disjointed and I felt like the animation quality was really choppy. But that's all just my opinion. I wish I could enjoy it more but don't let my opinion keep you from liking it.
@ayylmao5758 жыл бұрын
Astartes40000 Yeah, it was mostly the plot that kept the OVA from being great, although they could have also explored the world, and some character development, or at least have more than one character appear consistently. Eh, I liked the violence, it was disturbing at times but it was disturbing in a good way, like in a horror movie, and it was animated and detailed well, especially for an old anime. I liked the animation, it was choppy but it didn't really bother me, and no worries mate, I can see why people wouldn't enjoy this.
