Duel in the Mist is one of my favorite battle themes I've ever heard in the last 30 some odd years of playing video games. I love that we use traditional instrumentation to illicit fear, strength, focus, and determination. Not to mention this fantastic EDM beat pattern that really carries us into a modern music era. Fantastic stuff.

I love how, since Imazuma is the nation of eternity, there are so many repeated phrases in this music. It’s almost like we’re stuck in a series of interlinking loops of music that change as much as they stay the same.

Indeed, that trap drop beat is insane, I love that there is this digital tune making with traditional instruments, like wtf how is that even possible, it make me realice how good are the musicians here, yupeng chan always making such a great job and all the team in hoyoverse are incredible creating such amazing tracks

Chen Yupeng say he use drop beat in this piece. he also ask them to add some inconsistency after the drop (which to me feel like it give it a feeling of freedom, like it just a few friend playing music and hanging out). watching them deconstruct it after perfecting the music so it feel more "alive" than a perfect performance is amazing, i never thought music can be play on that way, these are things you can't just denote in the songsheet. the performers are truly masters to be able to both perform all the written note flawlessly as well as the unwritten emotion the composer wanted to express...

Duel in the Mist feels like 2 swordmen dancing in a battle. As the music and tempo increases, the intensity of the fight also increases. It's like there is fierceness and elegance to it. Then the last part where the music suddenly ends, the 2 swordmen returns their sword back to its scabbard. Amazing music.

This specific Battle OST for my ears evolves over time with how an actual battle would. It starts off with certain instruments being slightly out of sync or doing their own thing as if we are first trying to find the enemy within the 'mist', then the initial duel takes place and we learn the moves, and ifnally the part comes in with the flute where everything is in sync to represent us being fully immersed in the battle
@pega7550
@pega7550 Жыл бұрын
It's also interesting to think about the actual battle taking place - swords clashing when the melody continues and concentrated standstills when they remain on the same note. It's incredibly intense xD

The repetitive motif of shamizen and drums makes me feel like if I was in some kind of berserk-like trance. It keeps your heart beating, awakens your senses and makes you alert BUT it keeps a close distance to native Japanese instruments which makes the track exotic. That's so catchy. Your heart is literally syncronizing with the tempo. It somehow reminds me an awesome track from my favourite anime Monogatari - song called Irobokeneko Inazuma is an electro Archon nation, so it's obvoiusly EDM-ish soundtrack lol Raiden best DJ lorewise, confirmed
@NJR0091
@NJR0091 Жыл бұрын
The trap beat is very much intentional - the Shogun's boss theme and her character demo each have distinct electronic/trap sections. It's a neat little detail to have the Electro Archon's area feature (Electro)nic music. :) But I also think the similarity between not just this song but all the battle themes and Ei's boss theme are a subtle lore nod. One of Ei's relationship voicelines basically says that all the combat/swordsmithing styles of Inazuma originated from her directly, and that over time her one taught style branched off and blossomed into several distinct styles. As we encounter it in the story, Ei's boss theme is a leitmotif of all the battle themes we've been hearing up until that point; but with a different frame of reference one could look as Ei's boss theme as the original and the other battle themes as the offshoots of different parts of her theme that branched off into their own unique tracks. Might be a bit of a stretch, but as detail-obsessive as these people at Hoyoverse are I wouldn't put it past 'em lol.

Battle songs from Inazuma and Sumeru makes me so euphoric in a very specific way, traditional instruments are SO RAD, I love them so much. Even more with the way they are used, as "battle themes", or with modern-like structures - I totally agree that this piece with 100% traditional thousand year-old instruments literally has "A DropTM", and that is so cool! Worthy mentioning that Taiko drums were also used in wars, and heavily linked to lightning/thunder through Raijin, the lightning/thunder god Raiden Shogun was modeled after. Raiden's Chakra Desiderata halo is a direct reference to Raijin's Taiko drums floating around him! So, it's safe to say the Taiko percussion plays multiple, very important roles in Inazuma music, and not only bc it's a traditional instrument :D

Oh, also, on the "trap music" detail, there are other Inazuma tracks that use electronic music (trap in particular). Look at the Shogun demo, her battle music, and even Scaramouche Phase 2. Raiden's demo track also has a trap element to it, always found it rather curious. I think it's meant to represent discipline behind violence, destructive power of the lightning bent to one's will, ready to snap at any moment and wreak havoc on everything in its path. That's how it makes me feel, like a barely restrained violent impulse rampaging between the beats of warrior's heart. Raiden essentially gave rise to all the martial arts in Inazuma, she's very much a war god, and her spirit permeates everything related to battle. If that rambling makes any sense...

I love the call and response part in 6:22, it's like you and your opponent are exchanging blows, but you're both at the same level and no one really has any advantage. The shakuhachi part sounded like trap music the first time I heard it too and I believe that is what Hoyo-mix was intentionally going for. It falls under the tempo range of trap and the taiko sidestick(?) hits on the 2 and 4, giving it a modern music groove, which is pretty much absent in traditional music. Hence, the trap sound.

I've studied both historical (European) fencing and Eastern martial arts, and what I love about this song is how it embodies the initial tension of sizing up a new opponent which then gives way to both the frenetic energy of the duel as well as (in the flute) the stillness of mind that comes from letting go and allowing your training to take over. It's a beautiful piece.

8:10 yea! I also noticed the "trap beat" from this Duel in the mist song. Theres some parts of the songs that recalls the trap beat. Not only this song, but its actually present in other songs. Raiden's boss battle theme also has this "trap drop". Its quite discrete, but it happens. Obviously its different from this currently song we'here hearing in this video, because here they're using traditional instrument here in Duel in the Mist, and not exactly onlu traditional instruments for Raiden Boss theme. But overall, the "trap drop beat" is actually present in many other Genshin Theme osts. As i said, its quite discrete, but if you're into Trap songs, you will recognize it. Thats also present in Zhonglis theme, and kinda a little bit in Scaramouche s boss theme. All these songs got some trap music beat recipes. I mean, im not a musician, i know nothing about music. But i listened to enough trap songs back then to recognize they're slightly present in some Genshin Themes. Its some special touch they add to their songs that feels traditional but also modern. It fits well to the games theme and its characters. Feel free to Correct me if im wrong. But so far, those are my thoughts

At 7:00 when the drumers hit the sides of the drum (or the sticks, I can't see it well) the sound it makes reminds me like 2 swords (wooden, because of the sticks) are sparring with each other. I 100% agree with your comment about the trap music. a favourite track of mine that does this is the Raiden Shogun Demo OST. the repetitive quality to the tone , and almost percussive sound in all of Inazuma OST is phenomenal. anyhow, one thing I always appreciated about the composition of genshin impact is their ability to blend traditional culture and tonal qualities with modern beats and rhythmic styles. A big reason why I am always excited for each new demo trailer is to see what genre they pull out next with seemingly traditinal instrumentation. I love this harmonious blend of tradtional style and modern styles of music. it really does bridge between different ages of music. and that is truly beautiful and I hope to see this in more video games. either bringing together different styles or sharing less popular styles of music and putting them in the spotlight for their games. again, music like this truly is beautiful and I love your content as always marco, genuinely puts a smile to my face hearing your thoughts and analysis. keep it up!!!

I think shamisen represents Ei and puppet fighting as there are 2 being played at once, the flute as the passage of time, the string as uncertainty (traveler), and the drums are the build-up to that fight. Also this can be seen in each battle theme of genshin - as for Sumeru, the whole passage of the music is repeated 3-4 times before getting to the real end in the swirls of shamshir. Each of the battle themes end up being a foreshadowing for the tale of that country.

There’s always been something about the Inazuma themes that increases my anxiety but in a good way 😂 with this theme you feel like you’re being chased in circles, in a maze, facing off against an opponent and they’re just ankle to ankle with you in a dance, always just out of your sight until a clash. It makes my heart race like a lot of the music in Inazuma, which is what you’re meant to feel. It’s unsettling, sudden and kind of terrorizing like a lightning striking near you. They captured that element perfectly in this region for sure, I love it.

I honestly believe that Hoyo-Mix and Yu Peng Chen improve as they make more and more music so I think Sumeru music is the best one we got because of how recent it is but Inazuma music will forever have a special place in my heart I really love the fact that in this particular piece, there is only Japanese instrument (that I'm aware of) instead of a mix of traditional classical instruments like Violin or modern instruments like electric Guitar alongside it. I love track with a mix of cultures like the main theme for Inazuma and Sumeru but there is something special about a piece with pure instrumental of each region, I wish we will get more tract like this once in a while for the future (and past regions as well because I'm not aware of any Liyue piece with a similar setting) edit: Speaking of drop I think Scara battle music has the hardest drop in all of the genshin music, it was so intense and I love it so much I can't stop headbanging and jumping around dancing like I'm in some kind of club, especially noticeable when you play the extended version of the 2nd phase where the build-up and the drop are so obvious and iconic. This song inspires two vision in my head. The first is emblematic of it's name; a literal duel in the mist. I picture a lone samurai walking through a too-still bamboo forest as dusk transitions into night, threads of mist weaving being the stalks, reflecting the rising moonlight. Flashes of color here and there draw the attention of our lone samurai. Is it simply a trick of the light? Of the moon reflecting off the mist? Or is there actually something there? As the song proceeds it turns out that yes, there most definitely is something there, and our lone wanderer finds himself beset on all sides, a once-tranquil journey exploding into ferocious violence as he and his adversaries dart through and about the towering bamboo, mist and steel reflecting the light of the now-risen moon in equal measure, with the flute solo showcasing a final, desperate duel against the ringleader of the attackers as the lone samurai, now tired and worn down from his exertions, fights tenaciously for his life. The second vision is that of a storm. The lone individual notes at the beginning of the song are those raindrops on the leading edge of the oncoming calamity. You can see the clouds in the distance, gray and angry, flashes of light in them that are seen but not yet heard. Slowly, the sporadic patter picks up as more and more raindrops fall. Eventually, the notes of the song fill in, showcasing that we're past the leading edge and are now fully in the teeth of the storm. The flashes of lightning, previously too far to hear the accompanying thunder, are now brought full to bear, though they're restrained almost, in a way. The drums signify this, ever more present but not to the same intensity. Eventually, as the song progresses and the flute solo comes in backed by the accompanying drums we're surrounded by their lightning, beset from all sides by the flute's battering winds, the rain coming at us relentlessly as we simply struggle to hold on just a little bit longer. Surely just a bit longer and the fury of the storm will pass. Surely. I don't know which vision I like better. Both of them encompass feelings I had while journeying through Inazuma.

I think that is simply amazing how to mix traditional Japanese music using old instruments with trap rhythm which is more "modern." Mixing past and future, a clear representation of Eternity.

Hey Marco you really should start reacting to music from demon slayer. Right off the bat o would recommend "kamado tanjiro no uta" and uzui and gyutaro's final fight theme. Both are some of the best music I've ever heard

I never noticed the similarities of trap music, but now that it's pointed out out i feel dumb for not noticing, goddamn i love this game so much One of my favorite pieces of trap music is actually a remix of one of the other Inazuma's battle themes Overlord of the Thunderstorm by Mitsaki Music and now I see that the original version is actually very inspired by trap as well, I wonder how many other songs have this type of modern style integration as well

Nice breakdown of the Inazuma battle theme, because I never thought of the way you interpret and now it makes me enjoy the music even more ! Would you please do a similar video on Hogwarts Legacy - Overture to the Unwritten ? The game is releasing in a week so it seems like a suitable content for the channel too.

Hello, Shamisen player myself here. First of all, these musicians rock, what they played was quite difficult. The two shamisen could represent the two Samurai duelling in the mist. They basically "toss" the melody or leading pattern from one to another as if they were exchanging thrusts and blows with their sword. Kinda like a question-answer-pattern which you often find in classical music, when two instruments or group of instruments seem to have a little "conversation. The traditional drums perfectly underlining the melody with continious thundercracks, fitting for the land, ruled by the electro archon. Also, it was very clever and well observed as you noticed, that the repetitive notes on the Shamisen add some form of percussion to it. The body of the Shamisen is indeed a drum! And when playing it the mindset is not to hit the strings with your Bachi (That is the large, fan-like plectrum that they are using), but to hit the body/skin of the Shamisen with your Bachi while the string is in the way and you "accidentally" hit that one too. So each note you play is also some percussion! Thats why a lot of Tsugaru Shamisen melodies are heavily influenced by rhythmic patterns. Loved your take on the piece!
