Genting bus crash: Tour bus owners could face RM500,000 fine and jail time

The owners of the tour bus company involved in the Genting Highlands crash on Saturday could face a fine of RM500,000 and jail time, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He also announced that a major crackdown on tour buses will begin at 6am Tuesday (July 2), saying that joint enforcement operations will be conducted over the next few weeks.

Unlike long distance bus service, the Genting bus route is tourist centric, and the authority has not given the same attention as the other long distance route bus service. And because the Genting route is lucrative, it has attracted many players who may not put safety first. One just need to go to Stesen Sentral to see for yourself how chaotic the system is. The buses do not have proper parking bay, no proper information display, the ticket booth is just a temporary pondok, no seating facilities for waiting passengers, many touts just roam the place preying on unsuspecting passengers. During holidays seasons, these buses are put to work to the maximum without very little regulatory oversight. Transport ministry should not just talk about licence and papers. This is an accident waiting to happen for a long time already.

It's indeed shameful that the enforcement of our government departments, as usual, remain lax and ineffective in arresting the problems of recurring offences committed by errant tour bus operators until tragedy happened! The best of laws remain useless as toothless tigers without stringent enforcements! Vehicles which are no longer safe to be on the road are allowed to operate, endangering the lives of unsuspecting passengers! Hope the transport ministry looks into those commercial lorries, buses trailers that are speeding on the highways and using the 3rd or 4th lanes. A lot of accidents happen on the outside lanes from statistics. Normal to see them speeding between 120 to 160km h on highways

While at it, make sure that the lorries, buses and other commercial vehicles stick to the last lane instead of hogging the few middle lanes. When speed limits are at 90/80/70 at certain stretches for cars, these commercial vehicles' speed should be reduced accordingly and not allowed to be driving at the same speed of cars at these stretches. This operation by JPJ/Police should be conducted regularly, not just when a mishap happens.

Do that every now and then to ensure this will never happen in the future. Also, many government departments do spot checks on many companies for everything. Jpj dan polis trafik perlu lebih pro active, ambil tindakan sebelum kejadian. Misalnya pemandu ini telah 27 kali disaman. Kenapa perlu tunggu sampai 27 kali dan jadi kemalangan baru sibuk ini itu. Vehicular safety enforcements are always lacking in public and heavy vehicles. Speeding drivers and faulty public vehicles are often the main cause of road accidents. Enforcers must play its roles seriously while the law must punish these public and heavy vehicle operators with higher penalties both fine and jail terms. Most importantly stop all kind of collusion with corrupt enforcers.

Both the bus transport company and the tour operators must be charged and fined and they licenses must be assessed again . The tour operators should have got the best and safest transport instead of trying to go cheap . The bus transport company should have made sure their buses are up to standard both in safety and comfort .
