I don't think anyone ever got the humor of the Shulberry guitar. It's an instrument with a single string that played a single note. Derek plays it spot on.

Its three strings and three notes- it plays a chord that a xylophone-or marimba- was supposed to play. They couldnt bring it on tour, though

I was a huge Gentle Giant fan back when I was in high school and I forgot how much they pushed the boundaries of Prog Rock with their unique blend of a rhythmic contrapuntal style and classical themes. This song, Play the Game, for some reason was always one of my favorites from the group. I can't quite put my finger on it. It's a strange song that in the end seems to work. It has that unique GG driving odd time rhythm juxtaposed with angular melodies that are beautiful and satisfying. Repetitive music saturation is in full force in this song and done perfectly. But let's face it, there aren't a lot of people who can understand this type of music, let alone appreciate the brilliance of the old Prog Rock like Gentle Giant. Oh well... their loss...

Maybe they were not 100% appreciated, but here in Italy in the 70s they filled sports halls and big clubs. So they had many fans who understood and appreciated, at least for 70%, their brilliant musical productions.

They are all Gentle Giant. The group came first. I can 't imagine another drummer. Another guitarist. Another keyboardist. As I've said in other posts, these guys would have been famous as a street band. Derek made it possible for them all to transition from playing the strings, to the woodwind instruments, to the drums, and so on. If only they could have envisioned the happening of the internet. They come across so perfect for it. Like buried treasure in time.

Fairly sure this was BBC Sight and Sound broadcast in 78. Sound was courtesy of BBC Radio 2 (stereo, analogue) and TV picture broadcast on BBC 2. We tuned in and enjoyed, but the radio signal couldn't stay in sync with the tv pictures. But I still remember it well, including making my parents sit through it all.

@JunacCRO I just figured the reason for the instrument was to show the importance of rhythem to the melody. Whatever the case, Derek is spot on in his playing the single note. He was an integral part of the group as his voice and his ability made a lot of the bridging jumping off from one set of instruments to another possible. All these guys were true members of the group and seemed to enjoy playing their parts in it. They were and are an incredible education in the development of music.

I see. Gentle Giant were often accused of being pretentious show offs. Well, if they really weren't trying to avoid being so, they would have unleashed the abilities of Derek as a musician. He really allowed the rest of them to transition into sets from strings, to woodwind, to bells as multi-instrumentalists. They would have been a big hit on the streets of France playing to the people as a street band. I was able to make a connection at an early age to quality. Great product in package.

I use a little electric ukulele to cover Derek's work on this piece, it sounds fantastic with the forth string,, its tuned from the bottom up AEAD, and I can bar other chords in the song including the third fret when singing. Derek's shulberry was cute and it was used to make a statement that they were not conventional and what an iconic piece of Prog history here that was an integral part of this song. Not sure who is on Bass...

@@Cheese_1337 Living in this time and finding out about them through my older brothers connection to a local record shop owner who was a prog nut I can say with some certainty Kerry was stacking keyboards on his Hammond and creating masterpiece work slightly before greats like Rick Wakeman and Keith himself. Even if I am incorrect Kerry was a MONSTER keyboardist and he NEVER got the recognition he so deserved from a more general audience. The prog heads all know it.

I am sure he must be....?? but I just do not see it anywhere in the footage that shows him playing. I thought it might be fun for someone to try and figure out. Cool song for sure, we're doing it now...

Every amazingly talented band is called pretentious, sure don't get me wrong there are a fair share of bands that actually are pretentious in the literal definition of the word and bad, but the distinction between gifted and pretentious is often muddled into each other by most people.

@Islwynpaul And figure there was so much pretending to play to prerecorded music back then like on the Midnight Specials. Indeed, these guys didn't just have a few parts where they would jam to interesting interludes and arrangements. The whole album from beginning to end would be fascinating. You know, the jumping off of instruments and switching up from strings, to bells, and to percussions like they did would have made them popular even as a quintet playing on the streets.

Not the best rendition of this classic song: too fast-paced, as if there was a competition between Weathers and Derek S. on pushing it faster...and most of all, lacking the dynamics and subtelties of the original. Still, a great document and nice to see the Shulberry in action
