I buy my goodyear shoes used. I don't mind worn out soles as I resole them myself... as long as the uppers are good and they are on the original soles it should be no problem. If something is a real bargain and a style I really want, I'll even go for a resoled shoe that has also on it's last legs... I can then have a go at re welting the shoe. I have now got a little stable of 7 or 8 pairs of proper shoes that I would never even consider buying at their new price... and my resoling is very very good... I do have to get the local cobbler to do the outsole stitch though... I don't have room or money for a goodyear welting machine. great video.

I have been buying used shoes on e-bay for over five years. I have purchased shell cordovan Allen Edmonds down to bit loafers, Oliver Cabell minimum sneakers, Thursday Boot Co. Chelseas, Beckett Simonon loafers, Magnanni monk straps and others. I have built a great collection at a fraction of the cost. If you buy pre-owned shoes: 1. If you do not know the name of the brand, search for it. Very often you come up against a name that's feigning tradition or English heritage - and that's really made in some sweat-shop (like John White, Clarks or Doc Martens). 2. The same goes for Italian shoes: make sure it is really Italian - and not only the name! Also with Italian shoes, the size is generally one size lower, so a 46 is really only a 45 and Italian lasts are generally slimmer. By and large Italian shoes are Blake stitched and not Goodyear welted. 3. With American/UK shoes: don't forget that e.g. an American size 12 is a British size 11! 4. With British shoes being so coveted, try Spanish, Hungarian, Austrian, Portuguese or French. As some of the makes are virtually unknown there's quite often a bargain waiting. Just recently I bought an excellent Belgian one called 'Ambiorix' - they were brand new and I bought them for a song! 5. With British brands: perhaps you should stay clear of the first tier of them, like Church, Cheaney, Crockett & Jones, Edward Green, Sargent, Gaziano & Girling, John Lobb as everybody wants them and therefore costs are too high. Instead concentrate on the second tier of British shoemakers, like Loake, Barker, Grenson, Sanders & Sanders, NPS/Solovair. They are not so well known are therefore cheaper. 6. Search for the original price, that may save you from making costly mistakes. So do not 'fall in love' with a pair of shoes, i. e. do not bid too high - there's always a tomorrow and new shoes. And be prepared for disappointments - as sizes and widths do vary considerably. In that case it helps, if your bid (i. e. your loss) wasn't too high. 7. Try Ebay-Kleinanzeigen (not available in the UK, but e.g. in Germany). Fairly often there's a real bargain hiding, as there is no bidding, just a fixed price, which in some cases even can be negotiated. 8. And one more thing that is often overlooked: the inner sole (which cannot be taken out) may be worn in and therefore is not too comfortable! So that only can be remedied if you have the outsole replaced along with the cork between the outsole and insole, something that may be costly. 9. Always look out for the sole as repairs can be costly. So always ask for photographs of the sole. 10. Always make sure you buy a pair of 'Good Year Welted' or 'Blake Stitched' ones. Stay clear of cemented ones, as you will have difficulty in resoling them.

I got lucky at goodwill years ago (around 2010) and found a great pair of AE black wing tips for $20. My local cobbler put a new insole and outsole on it for $125. More than ten years later, I discovered "Classic Mens Wear" and realized what I had; 1980's Allen Edmond McAllister shoes. Shout out Derek's Shoe Repair, Portland, OR.

I’ve been burned for sure, I’ve had shoes not fit properly and just not look how I hoped. I’ve been able to sell those shoes and recoup some money, and on the whole I’ve done very well with used shoes.

I had luck of picking up and selling few pairs of Red wing boots and shoes. Seems like my arches relaxed a bit when I got 30 so i needed diferent size due to the different heel to ball and heel to toe meshurment. They were lightly used and i used this opportunity to see the brake in leather, and to what will it develop. I ended up with 2 pairs that have stunning brage across the pair that i love wery much. At that price point they dont look at the brake grain of the vamp as much as they do at Viberg or Trickers level

I've bought over a dozen pair used on Ebay. Most pre owned shoes offered have only been worn a few times because they don't fit. You must know your Brannock size and the equivalent size in the brand being offered. I often ask for and check the equivalent EU size. An AE 9D works out to be an EU 43 for me. Hope this helps. Some times you just have to take a chance and hope you can resell if they don't work.

Buying used shoes is nice....if they work, but I now have about SEVEN pairs of shoes that did not work out so well, and I've never worn them in public. Most of my vintage shoes are old Florsheims from the 60s, 70s and 80s, including two pair of Golden Harvests (93631), three pair of shell cordovan 97626s, a pair of 31836 and a pair of 97606. The 97606s are my most recent purchase. They had been recently resoled and squeak when you walk in them so they will need to be resoled.

I’m fairly new to the gentlemen look and can’t wait to start my adventures but I’m coming from a different mindset. Barefoot shoes I have worn for so long that wearing anything with a heal have a hard time justifying. Also the tight constricting toe box is really the main reason I wear “barefoot” style shoes. I know there are few dress shoes that are advertised barefoot but don’t know what a gentleman’s opinion is on. I remember getting a pair of Levi's twill shoes for free from a coworker. Her son didn't want them because they looked like something those weird metalheads wear. The thing we didn't know it was the same model I been looking to get for years. I couldn't find them but she came and just gave them to me. They didn't get much user before so the wear they had was mostly from dust. Now I wear them every chance I get. Someone's trash is another's treasure I guess. Very true. Today's Florsheims including the Imperials aren't comparable to vintage Florsheim's. Exception is one particular model, the Florsheim Essex short boots. It's built like the classics.

Used shoes are the only way I go for dress shoes now. The biggest problem is we men tend to wear shoes until they are completely dead. However, I bought my first pair of oxblood oxfords new with my first suit, but while in grad school in Sweden I purchased a brown pair of oxfords, a set of brown derby shoes, an excellent set of black oxfords, and another set of shiny oxfords for my frac tuxedo (also found it used). They all fit great, they're already broken in, they have built in character to them, and I don't think I paid more than $25-30 for any of the pairs. Highly recommend second-hand shopping in general, especially for ties.

First thing with used shoes--saddle soap to clean up and remove old polish and poorly applied original shine Second, use Saphir Renovateur to bring life back to the leather and establish a base for a beautiful patina, rub this into creases to condition the leather Third, apply Saphir Shoe Polish Beaute du Cuir Pate de Luxe, then polish with a horsehair brush Fourth, use Saphir Medaille d’Or Pate De Luxe - Natural Wax Shoe Polish to polish the shoe Fifth. very sparingly use an extremely light application of Saphir Medaille d’Or Mirror Gloss - Natural Wax Polish for a more brilliant shine in appropriate areas of the shoe/ This treatment will usually make the shoe look far better with a richer shine and patina than new. You can use colored polishes, but most of the time using 'natural' gives by far the best result There are numerous KZbin videos on the correct method to do this.

First rule of buying used shoes online is to know your size and become familiar with the various manufacturers. The second rule is to be very patient in your search and look at many vendors to get an idea of what is available and the range of prices. It is extremely helpful to search out numerous KZbin reviews of different brands and styles, noting particularly that different makers may make a wide range of shoes of different quality levels. The third rule is to very carefully examine the photos of the shoes and carefully read the condition description. The forth rule for auction bids if you decide to buy the shoe is to know how much you are willing to pay, and to bid only at the last moment to avoid escalating the bidding-if you seriously want the shoe do not be afraid to place a bid higher than the range of the current bidding ("jumping the bid") which is why you must know what the shoe is worth to you and not be guided by what others are bidding. The shoe is sold at the next higher competitive bid, not the maximum bid you enter.

My experience is you need to be prepared to put the same amount of money into a used shoe as the purchase price. Typically you'll need to get the soles re-glued / stitched, the linings re-done or the heels replaced. The former especially if they've been stored for awhile in a hot or humid space. This need typically doesn't show itself until after a few wears.

Hey i got a pair of johnston & murphys at goodwill for 14.99 the soles were a disaster and the heals alsow but the inside of the shoe was brand new and the top was inmaculate brand new i took them to a good shoe shop they put on brand new leather soles and heals for 50.00 bucks and the shoe repair man told me when these shoes were new they had to be custom made and speacial ordered and they used to sell for 400.00 bucks and i said i know that he said do they fit you i said perfectly and he said boy are you lucky you paid 14.99 for them and invested 50.00 bucks on them and now you have 400.00 dollar brand new shoes and i said with a smile tell me about it buddy oh!yea😊

Durability varies greatly. Some of my cheapest shirts lasted for more than 10 years, while some from Zegna showed worn collars and cuffs after a year or so. Cuff-wear is reduced now that I dumped the clunky Rolexes in favour of a Swatch Skin (yes, true, I love it). Trousers do get a year noted at the inner label when I buy them. Bright coloured for summer I sometimes wear for more than a decade, navy-blue ones lose their colour fast after a very few laundries. Refresh-dyeing brings them back to life, so they are fine for some years, too. Sadly I had some damage to knitwear caused by moths. Some items could be repaired by invisible mending (not cheap). My favoured winter-jackets I wear for several years, now. For summer I like buying new stuff occassionally. Btw. ma shopping behaviour changed when getting older. At 20 I spent WAY too much for clothing, it really ruined me. Now in my 50s I settled down and I'm happy with the stuff I like (off-white in summer, navy in winter) and hope it lasts forever. ;)

I have been burned too many times buying sight unseen online in general to even think about used items. Plus, used shoes, yuck, icky! However after the many good points you made in this video I will at least look at gently used to see what bargains I can find. Thanks for the tips!

My best quality shoes are all sed. I make sure they fit "like butter" before paying. If they look great but don't fit perfectly, I pass. They wouldn't get worn later.

That's flat out disgusting. If you cannot afford a brand you want just select something more modest. People's feet have all kinds of diseases and stank. Clothes can be dry-cleaned. Shoes retain cooties. It's called being a WANNABE if someone wears shoes with someone else's funk.

It's sad that in my country, there's a culture of "I'll rather throw this out than sell it to someone for cheap!". So, despite the era of classic clothing having lasted at least 20 years longer than in the rest of the world, there's virtually no vintage pieces of any kind still around.
