Garderobe is dutch, ben je nederlands? (are you dutch?)
@Maddie-ol5oc4 жыл бұрын
I believe garderobe is another term for ‘dressing room’ or occasionally ‘wardrobe’. My mother used to call the room which adjoined her boudoir the ‘garderobe’. Might have changed though!

I’m running in the wrong circles. I’m a middle aged man and I’ve never been invited to or even heard of an invitation with the words lounge suits. Living in Florida our clothing options are limited. It’s extremely casual here. Too casual generally for my preference. It’s the oppressive heat. You can never wear a tweed suit here or a heavy sweater. Maybe once or twice a year. Big on cargo shorts in this state. People wear T-shirt’s to fancy restaurants. Ugh.
@ER-me1ii6 жыл бұрын
Adriano Oda Yamada what I’m saying is what it is. Maybe you can understand it if I say it again differently. People dress much more casually overall here. Understandable because of the intense heat. I never ever thought it was ok to wear shorts while working. But after a little while down here I came yo understand it’s ok outdoors. Cops do it so ok. Because there are two seasons hot and ridiculously hot you can’t wear about half of what men can wear in a temperate zone. You also see people go to events like evening weddings in khakis. It’s much more casual. You’ll never ever need an overcoat. Men wear sandals and other horrible footwear. Yes you can wear linen suits and very lightweight stuff but even then if you walk a city block you’ll be sweating. Hope this clears things up. Hate is a very strong word.
@ER-me1ii6 жыл бұрын
Adriano Oda Yamada no problem. Not hating just stating. I generally dress pretty well just not in the way I’d prefer. No layers etc.

If must wear shorts, you can always wear them with a sport jacket. BTDT ages ago when more sensitive to the heat. Point is, just because everyone else dresses sloppy doesn't mean you have to. Lots of fabrics for jackets and pants that are good choices for tropic climate. I am always over dressed here, especially in the summer when folks do as in Florida and wear T-shirts and sloppy shorts into nice places. Currently working in a light assembly factory and wear slacks, button shirt, nice sweater, and a windbreaker as needed. Myself here in Phoenix am comfortable in a wool suit even in Summer, but a light two button sport coat and cotton slacks, not my heavy wool double breasted suit (though have worn but had to take the jacket off outside).
@ER-me1ii6 жыл бұрын
Adriel Rowley you’ll never see me wear a jacket and shorts. I think it’s ridiculous look. My main point is that non stop heat limits choices. It’s dry in Phoenix. Very different here. I do like to be casual in this heat but sloppy and not thought out ? No. I miss cooler climate and 4 seasons. The other point is that it’s overly casual here. Cargo shorts are huuuge. That’s all.
@adrielrowley6 жыл бұрын
Only limits your choices if you allow it, mind over matter. I been in the South when 90* and 90 percent humidity more than once, am still in pants and long sleeve shirts. Plan to move there, just working on gathering the resources, so can be near family. About adjusting your body to the temperature. Miss having three seasons, so can kind of understand. Life doesn't always put us where meets all our desires, just have to work with what we have.

Thank you, very informative. Could you please make a video about mixing different pants from jacket and your observations? For business, I often wear either plain dark wool pants with a more friendly slightly lighter herringbone jacket, or a dark jacket with plaid pants. My reasoning is that a suit, in business (not social situations) tends to prevent human connection and puts people on the defensive. It's simply too formal on day-to-day if you want people to actually tell you what is really going on and truly get things done, on a daily basis. I'm in the actuarial field. I'd love to hear your opinions and theories on strategic downdressing to make people feel less intimidated and building long-term business relationships that are open, rather than on guard and defensive.

There is a distinct historical trend of more casual clothes (e.g. the lounge suit, the tuxedo) coming to be considered more formal and replacing or displacing more formal versions (e.g. morning suit, white tie and tails). This worries me because current modern "casual" is basically sweatpants and a t-shirt and hoodie 😱

You mention this is not a time for an ascot. I’d love to see more about best ways and occasions to wear an ascot. I think ascots are under appreciated and underused today! Also can you talk more about shirt colors and face shapes or other factors dictating which color shape. I had never heard about face shape making a difference.

Why do you have such an aversion to button-down collars, i.e. what makes them casual? I'm a huge fan of them as they keep the collar stiffly in place without the need to starch or use a tie bar and they ensure that the collar does not come with too much spread.

I love learning about these things but after .. oh i dunno, 7-8 years of this, I realized that most people will spend their entire lives not ever needing (for example) a tux for a black tie event, or will need to know the intricacies of when to wear a white dinner jacket/tux. Still, it is nice to know I can just come to this channel and search for these topics. I am curious though - how would one manage to require this sort of esoteric knowledge? The most formal event most people will experience in their lives is a wedding and i'm sure 99/100 the dress code will just require random dinner jackets, instead of males matching in black.

So basically for men "lounge suit" is the same as "business attire"?
@droidsURlooking46 жыл бұрын
If you never attend dinners/events with a dress code -- and your work is also completely casual -- you could still just take you wife out to dinner (example) and dress well. Just make sure you pick the most suitable place you can. Being the best dressed is nice, but wearing black tie at a Red Lobster will just make you clash and look like an idiot. Also, you could join a club or a fraternal organization like The Elks, Odd Fellows, Masons -- they still have formal events and rituals, although check as some lodges have gone more casual.

@seikibrian86416 жыл бұрын
Michael Powell "...what is a lounge anyway; what do you do there?" A lounge is a place for lounging. In other words, it's a place for gathering not related to work or church. It could be some place specific such as a cocktail lounge, or simply the "living room" of your home when guests are invited.

You state that oxfords, semi-brogues or derbys are acceptable -- showing a pair of long-wings as your derby example (I'd call them blutchers or just long-wings before calling them derbys, but..) Then you state that full-brogues would not be acceptable. Question: Wouldn't long-wings be considered full-brogues?

I don’t understand. “Lounge” suit sounds like it should be casual, like a leisure suit. But throughout this video, you advise against looking casual.
@mr.anti-hero43988 ай бұрын
It's quite anachromatic is it? The reason this is confusing is due to the fact that the dress code implies the formality base from the early 20erth century. What we consider formal nowdays (business full-ON ansamble) was quite casual back then--thus the term "lounge". Wearing a lounge suit then could be interpreted as modern man sporting a tracksuit with a pair of slippers nowdays. Suit was for lounging, and One would seem quite embarassed to step a foot outside in it. Too much mental discomfort
