Trad is an adaptation of the North Eastern American style which is not as popular as prep or Ivy style. Arguably, trad is the most classic and refined version of this northern American style. It's, in fact, a somewhat contemporary take on the fashions of the roaring 20s. Its core is similar to Ivy style, trad was born as a form of rebellion against the fathers and the parents. It was a way for students to develop their own identity using clothes that were somewhat related to what their fathers would have deemed appropriate, at the same time, adding their own touch to it. Trad was way for young men to distinguish themselves from polo and boat shoes wearing young men as well as very stodgy old Saxon wearers.
So what exactly is the difference between prep, Ivy, and trad style?
Think about it this way, prep is the most casual style. Ivy is a notch up, and trad is even less casual and more formal than Ivy style. The entire purpose of trad is to maintain the conservative approach to clothing while adding a personal note without going overboard and looking like you're wearing a costume.
So how would you dress in a trad style way?
Well, first of all, think of it as using a very traditional approach with a bit of nonchalance. You just add more casual elements that would traditionally not work with your outfits, for example, that means you invest in a blue navy blazer or two in several three-piece or two-piece suits, as well as cardigans and sweater vests. However, instead of going with plain solid worsted colors you would mix it up and wear maybe a herringbone suit in brown or maybe a houndstooth flannel suit, or you would go with a faint windowpane on your navy suit, instead of going plain solid. So to mix it up, you would skip the matching vest with your suit and instead, opt for maybe a burgundy flannel vest or a doeskin vest or a moleskin vest or you could go with a blue tweed vest.
In terms of neckwear, you can still wear neckties and bow ties, however, you can maybe go with slightly different knots.
In terms of tie fabrics, madder silk ties were very popular and so were repp striped ties.
The goal is to always express yourself in a sophisticated way that is different enough to break with the monotony of classic suits all the while not allowing people to pinpoint how your outfit is different.
Obviously today, dress codes have relaxed a lot more and so it's okay for trads to wear slightly more colorful pocket squares or just things that are a little bit louder that might have not been considered 100% trad appropriate 50 years ago.
I think trad is a wonderful concept because it allows people to wear suits that are not business suits and therefore they look more casual but they're still quite stylish. Of course the world, in general, has become more casual and so prep style and Ivy style are more popular today but if you want to mix things up and go a little bit more formal, trad might be the perfect way to do so.

Excellent as always! As a prep style enthusiast, I roomed on a class trip with a young man who was...let us say not versed in the sartorial arts. He noticed I would frequently get compliments from women on my outfit and said he wished there was something similar but more formal that he could emulate. I explained trad style and waited for the day you'd produce a video! I'll be sharing this with him as we gear up to raid the thrift stores this Wednesday!

Nice Presentation. I would really like to see you walk through how colors changed by the past 8-10 decades or periods in menswear in general. ie: the 1920's forward and how men clothing colors have changed.

This was a great explanation. Even though I'm a woman, preppy style has been my go-to although I did fall into the generic jeans and t-shirt style. I've always loved blazers and bright colors. This gave me options for Traditional for work life. I think the Trad is still reminiscent of the old English countryside sport look (which I love). Many men, in NYC at least, wear a navy blue suit to formal events with tie. A bowtie and khaki pants with same blazer and shirt is their casual.

I'm going to suggest another style to the 3 you mentioned. Am not sure what to call it - maybe "Mod" style after the UK musical subculture. While it will often use traditional materials and good quality cloths , the cut is a bit sharper and it is often favoured by musicians. Though not particularly a part of that subculture it's a style I like a lot and though I have more than one type of "look" I favour a slight "edge" to otherwise traditional clothes

That is an interesting take on "trad", and a bit different from what I understand it to be. My understanding is that it's simply a progression from the ivy league style after one graduates from college and heads out into the world. That means 3/2 roll sack suits with flat front pants, regimental stripe and printed foulard ties, button down or point collars, conservative cap toes or longwings, and so on. Basically the look that J.Press still carries on today. My 2 cents.

It's funny, because he speaks native-level English, and you improperly used "whatsoever," and you forgot an article before "truth," and there's a comma splice in your last sentence. Stick to the wardrobe insults. Cheers.
@Kishidoku
@Kishidoku 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry! I forgot to mention your misspelling of "pronunciation." Also, you misspelled "referring." Also, when using "also" as a conjunctive adverb, a comma is necessary. Another comma is needed before "but." In my first comment, the comma before "because" is optional and stylistic, unlike nearly all of your mistakes. Native-level means "at the level of a native," which is hyphenated here because it is modifying the following noun. I'm sorry that you failed to use context clues to figure that one out. Indeed, native-like is also a word, and neither one is a concept I "made up." I noticed that, in an attempt to prove that my comma usage was incorrect, you copied a passage from an English grammar website, which actually substantiates the claim that that comma was optional, and posted it on about half of my uploads-including those from years ago-alongside personal attacks and borderline threats directed at me. I hope you can find it in your heart to congratulate this "mentally retarded poor maggot" from a "third-world country" (the U.S.A.) on matriculating at Brown University this fall. I find it rather likely that you will, instead, somehow find a way to criticize that as well. Perhaps you were educated at Harvard. Let it be known that I hate it when people are overly picky with language, but if you're bothering to be picky, you might as well not be so noticeably self-contradictory. Goodbye forever.
