I gigged with an MP-1 and a Boogie Strategy 400 power amp into a pair of Boogie 4x12s back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. A plugin into a set of studio monitors is not the same.

I know, I never tried to argue that it feels the same. A plugin never could feel like a cranked amp, just because it’s not an eq or dynamic thing that they’re missing, but the physical interaction between a guitar and a speaker in a room. I get that, I just wanted to check out the plugin. To be completely honest I first heard of the plugin, and then because of that I found out what an iconic piece of gear the ADA MP-1 was. So it was kinda backwards. Also my living situation would never allow me to crank an amp up, so I often look for digital alternatives. I think a lot of people are in a similar situation and I wanted to share this cool thing I found with them. Thanks for commenting! Hope that didn’t come off as aggressive, just wanted to clear these things up.

“I’ll try a classic gear” and then proceeds to the plugin version. you lost me in that point.

You said all that about you growing up only really playing amp sims and wanting to try out the old way and proceeding to play through another amp sim with a different tone? So what's the point of this then? Don't get me wrong, I use amp sims just as most do and I think they sound great, but it is still different to play through an actual tube amp. Did you really never play through an actual tube amp? I hope you do one day, as to me it's just so much more fun. Edit: I hope this doesn't come off too aggressive. I'd have just really liked your reaction to playing a tube amp at a decent volume and see what you would play on that.

Nah, it’s ok, I get it. I’ve owned a fully tube fender-style combo. And believe me, I get it. The interaction between a guitar and a speaker in a room is something that amp sims will never get right, simply because it’s not a tone thing. It’s not an eq or dynamic difference, it’s the guitar literally feeling different. Now that amp could only do cleans. I’ve also played through a dual rec into a 4x12 in a rehearsal space, and I’ve never felt more “nacked” in my playing. There’s like….nothing I could hide behind. And I think that’s still due to the guitar being in the same room as a cracked cab. I get that, but unfortunately I live in an apartment. If I crank up my studio monitor too much - it’s a problem. That’s why I look for software that can as closely as possible recreate the actual tone of a certain piece of gear. I know it’s not gonna be the same experience. Plus a thing that I probably should’ve explained better in the video: I first saw and heard the plugin, and then I started getting into the history of the ADA MP-1. Thanks for writing!

Back in the 1980's few music store, nothing like the huge Guitar Centers you see all over now. When you found gear, a lot of the time it was junk in comparison to what is built today. I learned on a guitar that looked like some country flowering on it, no name brand and the body was about 1" thick and everything was mounted on top of the body or board as I called it. It played, but was total shit. I ended up building my own guitar that for about 5 years was actually a killer guitar after I heard Eddie saying he built his own in a magazine. yeah, we didn't have the internet either to go watch others play so sitting in your house rewinding a cassette tape over and over an over. Better get spares, because you will need to duplicate your tapes from wearing out or being eaten by the wheels and heads. Thankfully, cd's came along, but them my amps were so loud the vibrations would make them skip while playing. Good times! But we had to be more dedicated to learn by ear like myself to still be playing 39 years later. Because a song could take well over a month to get right. Sometimes longer when you cannot afford lessons. I paid for 3 lessons from Mark Slaughter in Las Vegas NV before he left to Vinnie Vincent at Vesely's music store which was $15.00 a half hour back then when Mark was still a nobody. Thats a LOT of money for back then. And thats where it ended and I finished learning by ear. Good times, good times.

Wait, you’re only 18? Porn-stache game is on point for your age! Also, I have an ADA mp2 and it’s the only amp I used for about 30 years before getting into modern amp sim plugins. Nice demo my guy!

Weeeeeeeeeeell, technically 19 now, but "18" and "80s" look better in a title together. Also DAMN, only one amp for 30 years sound insane. I can't stick to one tone for a week. Thanks for writing!

Damn, those are two pieces of gear I hadn't heard of before :) I'm realizing more and more how I'm completely oblivious to this period of guitar with all the rack gear n stuff. Thanks for commenting!

@AlexGichevMusic ive made many reviews on old gear. While not even remotely close to the quality of your videos, its something to check out to learn about new units, im also happy to chat about it whenever you want ;)

eeeeeh.. You are missing the joy of the real deal into a power amp and into a 4x12 cab. Sims get close but it just misses it. it's hard to explan. but if your pants aren't flapping then its not loud enough.
