The Catholic saint Josemaria Escriva (founder of Opus Dei) also had a similarly beautiful line: “When a person is convicted in the courts of mankind he is condemned. But when he is convicted in the court of God he is….set free.” That line always brings a tear to my eye. So beautiful.

I believe this is the most beautiful version of "Everlasting Arms" that exists today. It was used so effectively in the newest version of "True Grit". It added a sense of warmth and familiarity to the film and gave it some real depth.

I'm not one bit religious minded but I could listen to this endlessly. It's just such wonderful music especially the slow pace, the crescendo just before the magnificent singing voice of Iris Dement! Wonderful. The way all music should be! (The lyrics are a little weird but can forgive that 😉). I doubt Iris is ultra religious too - never heard of her before but I listened to some of her other tracks on KZbin and ..... 🤣😂

@@dt1351 I’m glad! There are many Christian songs and hymns, even classical pieces like Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring that make the heart soar. No other music makes me feel like this. Life is hard and full of disappointment and death, but I have consolation that there’s more to life than living for yourself and then dying. Life really would be pointless without God, at least in my opinion. There’s so much suffering, horror, and unfairness. But that’s why I believe in God, because he gives us the capacity to help others and gives us hope that the world won’t always be like this. Food for Thought👍

Every time In hear this song I cry, I cant help myself, I just turn to water every time.If others are present I turn my head and the tears flow. I try to leave the company of others and I weep until the weeping stops. I cry I think because I understand the meaning of the words and why it was written. I believe it is because Christ loves me despite what I am, and unlike some in the world today the Lord who made me has given me some knowledge of his undying love for me, and that he was and is and shall always be my Everlasting Arms. Yep, hands down I admit it, I'm a wuss. I'm Done!

You cannot possibly understand what I wrote, it’s on a completely different level to what you may or may not have experienced in your life. It is not just about the song per say, prior to hearing that song my inner being was touched by the Holy Spirit, and each time I hear Leaning On The Everlasting Arms It’s as if that touch ignites all over again, and I feel the presence of the Holy spirit in and upon me and I weep. That my friend is what does it for me. I simply turn to water every time Jesus touches me, and inexplicably some things act as a primer or trigger. Wish I could go to heaven "already"

Reed ; I was an racist, atheist until I was thirty years old . I had no fear of Hell , and no hope of God or Heaven . I just knew that a six foot hole awaited me and I wondered why and what good was life at all just to have it end in nothing . But God , who's name is YAHOWAH [ YHWH ], The Father of My Lord Jesus , His Son , called me by His mercy and grace and revealed His Son to me ; hanging on a cross , beaten more than any man , tortured and spit on, mocked and rejected by almost all. And that Jesus was indeed alive and well and had a whole new life for me If I would pursue Him . I did and He did. I have been happy, blessed , and at peace for thirty four years now . Not church , not religion , but a whole new life in the Spirit of the living God Himself . Jesus says that if you continue in His Word , that makes you HIS disciple , and you shall know the truth , and that truth shall make you free . Read Mathew , Mark, Luke , and John . See Jesus for the first time . The real Jesus , not some long haired wimpy preacher as most people imagine . He was a big , powerful, fearless man . Looked up to by some pretty rough Characters who's lives He changed like mine .

True grit has to be my favorite movie of all time, love the old west films old and new. This song Iris did included in the end of the new film makes it warm and reflective of the friendship and kinship the young girl had in the two adult men who were veterans of the same war on opposing sides. As well as keeping her alive through it all. This song ads familiarity and relief that a new movie like this one would include a beautiful spiritual Christian song. Love every aspect of it.

Such a lovely song and done in a way that sticks to me. This is one of those songs that came along during a certain time in my life, not long go, and it came into my memory, and has never left. And sitting here listening to this song and it's coming over me again.

What a fellowship, what a joy divine, Leaning on the everlasting arms; What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Refrain: Leaning, leaning, Safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, Leaning on the everlasting arms; Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Refrain: Leaning, leaning, Safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, Leaning on the everlasting arms. What have I to dread, what have I to fear, Leaning on the everlasting arms? I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, Leaning on the everlasting arms.

[Opening voice-over, as an adult] People do not give it credence that a young girl could leave home and go off in the wintertime to avenge her father's blood. But it did happen. I was just 14 years of age when a coward by the name of Tom Chaney shot my father down and robbed him of his life and his horse and two California gold pieces that he carried in his trouser band. Chaney was a hired man and Papa had taken him up to Fort Smith to help lead back a string of Mustang ponies he had bought. In town, Chaney had fallen to drink and cards and lost all his money. He got it into his head he was being cheated and went back to the boarding house for his Henry rifle. When Papa tried to intervene, Chaney shot him. Chaney fled. He could have walked his horse, for not a soul in that city could be bothered to give chase. No doubt Chaney fancied himself scot-free. But he was wrong. You must pay for everything in this world, one way and another. There is nothing free, except the grace of God.

You should change your beliefs because to be an atheist is to believe in nothing and to believe in nothing makes living life meaningless. Everything you care about is meaningless. Everyone you love is meaningless. Everything you do is meaningless. The world did not appear out of nothing because nothing is something. You cannot tell me that there is not a higher power than ourselves that created this world, this existence. Atheism is a true lack of knowledge and intelligence. I was agnostic for 35 years and not believing in the Bible or God or any of it but I did believe that a higher power existed. I asked Jesus Christ a few months ago to come into my heart and save me and help me through life. I was very sincere from the bottom of my heart and I can tell you that every day since then has been great. No more anxiety, fear, hate, aggravation, depression, worry, being lost, feeling without purpose. Seek Jesus Christ and ask him to heal your heart and save you from an eternity without peace and he will no questions asked. No sin is unforgivable except rejecting our Lord. When you die and stand before the one you have rejected it will be too late and nothing you can say or do at that moment will make him forgive you. Time was running out the day you were born. Repent now before its too late.

John Rider I appreciate your comments. I sometimes envy Christians who believe 100% without doubt. For me, I don't believe in God for the same reason I don't believe in Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy. I simply don't believe - and I couldn't if I wanted to. It's not a choice.

@@dt1351 I myself have one 6 year old granddaughter. I fear for her future in this world too. We went from the Victorian era when a woman couldn't even show an ankle to our pornographic world where women wear basically strings for bathing suits. We humans just can't find moderation.

@@kbblaze9371 it's very difficult to see how humankind can continue. We have made too many other species extinct simply by our presence and our greed. Eight billion+ of us & counting is far far too many of the human species yet it's only a short few years since global population was a mere fraction of that. 2,000 years ago human global population was about 10,000. Dread to think how our numbers are going to become sustainable without our total extinction and it's going to happen in my grandchildren's lifetime. I watched an episode of Wife Swap yesterday where a family with 11 kids & counting didn't send any of them to school and lived in a bus in the Australian outback. Poor kids - some humans are too selfish to see where they're heading 😱

@@dt1351 I'm at a loss for words at all you say. We humans are like a field. It can grow flowers and trees and grass for God's creatures or it can be used as a landfill and you know what goes into that. Makes me tearful but to despair is wrong because there is a Power greater than All things that washes us clean, make us better, make us kind, gives us hope, helps us feel deeply and understand that Beauty of all kinds is a gift, the worth of which is beyond riches. To despair is to ignore all of that and Im not supposed to do that to myself or to others. Let us have hope and faith and love.

I have no religious affiliation except that of mutual respect and humanity ,but this piece and another song sung by Iris Dement "He reached down" confirms to me the error made when segregating ones self to secular belief , it is instinctive for me to help whenever I can and to be relied upon ,but if I were to be pulled into one set of beliefs ,music and words of this type have a convincing effect , really ,very nice indeed but we must be those arms to rest on and reach down to those in need ,"We may hope and we may pray but the physical act will save the day " PT 2022. , good conscience cannot come from words alone ,but the benevolent act must be recognised with benevolent words of good conscience ....and all this musically inspired . .

I began hearing this song in church at about the age of 4, but I've never been moved by it until I heard this version, sung by the great Iris Dement, originally from Paragould, Arkansas, just a very short drive from Sheryl Crow's hometown of Kennett, Missouri., and just around the curve from my home. But it took me over 40 years to hear them. Too much info? lol. I liked this True Grit better than the original, even though it was very good also.
