I adopted a reactive senior dog. I told 'em at the shelter that I wanted the one w/the least chance of being adopted, & they gave me Ed. He was a solid unit, 65 ponds, low to the ground, a shepherd mix. On our first walk, he tried to attack another dog. He didn't threaten; he really did try to kill. I bought a muzzle for him & read everything I could find about reactive dogs. Tried different collars until I found one that worked. Trained "Ed" to sit, stay, come on command. Avoided other dogs. Got him a pair of gogges to narrow his field of vision so he wouldn't be startled by someone coming up from behind. The main thing I learned was to NEVER break momentum. If Ed saw another dog, I immediately turned around & marched the other way. When another dog came in view, I started turning around & asking for a sit, & immediately giving a treat I never train with rears, but this was the right thing. I did not allow him to lunge, I didn't react to his reaction, and I'd shove a treat in his mouth the minute we turned around. After a while, he'd automatically sit at the sight of another dog. It took a year, but guess what? He finally stopped trying to attack. He was old when I got him, lived to be 15 ~ learned to not just tolerate other digs $ even had a dog sister the last year of his life plus a Husky girlfriend. No more muzzle or goggles needed. I did all this from a manual wheelchair; my point is that ALL dogs deserve a chance. They all want to please. It's our job to figure how to ask them to do the right thing.

I was working in a shelter, but recently was bullied by several employees trying to make me quit. On top of the stupid politics with head office and our shelter, the euthanizations, I took leave. I am so horribly depressed not working, and today I felt like taking my own life. After watching this video, I realize that I can't do that to myself. Things will get better. I'm not a failure of a human being.

It’s really difficult thinking of not wanting to live anymore! Earth is anything but easy. Been there myself: rejected and bullied- it’s awful and nothing no one deserve! I learned with time that it said everything about the mental state those people are in and nothing about me. Take care and lots of love to you ❤

@ThereseDavidson thanks. I just feel like my life last few years having to live back with my parents at my age.. I just feel like a clown. This city has been really quite the learning experience. I'm putting in even more work this week to find a new job. I wish animal care attendant work paid better. It's such a passion of mine to help animals, I thought I was content with the huge pay cut working in this field, but I am struggling to survive this year. I'm 35 years old, this is not where I thought I would be in life right now and it bothers me so much. Tomorrow is another day. Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate it. 🙏

Please extend the same compassion and care to yourself that you would give to a dog or cat in your care at the shelter who is depressed and not where they want to be. You are not alone in your situation. Many people are struggling at this time. May you find work that sustains you financially and allows time to spend with animals on a part time or volunteer basis. You are here for a reason and you matter. May God bless you and guide you as you move forward to where you are intended to be.

Had one just like him, but a girl. It took two years before she’d let me touch her. She was so afraid. My family and friends all thought she’d kill me one day. So true - a friend started the MoBay Animal Haven in Jamaica, rescuing dogs from all over the island. She got a call one day about a homeless man’s animals “being neglected”. Upon investigation, she found this mentally ill man living in the bush, taking care of about 5 dogs as best as he could: turns out he was doing the best he could to take care of these animals with limited resources, and it was obvious the animals were lovingly cared for. So she arranged for vet checkups and treatment, showed the man how to take better care of them (and himself), and ensured that he got weekly food drops - they thrived!! Dogs are amazing creatures - remember “god” is just dog spelt backwards…….❤

I rescued an un-socialized insecure dog that was reactive to men and dogs. He'd been attacked by his own pack and probably the previous owners bf. Our biggest breakthrough came when I rescued a senior cat. We're still working through everything... it's a slow process but we're getting there in baby steps. He's come along way .... May will be 4 years, but we are all a work in progress. 💔💕👣🐾💞💝

Not everyone would have given this gorgeous boy a chance, I'm so grateful you did! At the other end of the spectrum my chihuahua has to be muzzled by the vet to have her ears checked or treated. She is not an aggressive dog at all. I've had her since she was 8 weeks old, and she is soon turning 12 years but her ears are her weakness. The vet refers to her as a land shark! ❤️ from Australia 🇦🇺

You never gave up on him. you gave him the time he needed to adjust. You really did your homework to make him understand that he was and is safe. You've given him love and support. You have given him a family, a home and a dream life. And above all you didn't give him to someone else after he learned all this. You understood that a crushed soul can't heal twice. I have been around dogs my entire life. Trixie, my newest 4 legged companion I met at our local Humane society. Trixie had been adopted three times before she met me. Our first encounter was her snarling and attempting to get at me through the cage she was in. But I was asked to go sit in their great room. They brought her in and immediately she came over and after giving me a quick once over all 50 pounds of her jumped up and decided my lap was the best place to be. Years later she sits here besides me as I type this note. Dogs are amazing!!

Amazing new dog humans. Having done 30 years of rescue i will say with certainty, you are a rare breed of humans. In all my years absolutely no one would have invested the time, energy, patience and compassion you both have invested. The outcome is a dog living in a loving home and his best life. ❤

This is one of thé luckiest dogs in the world to end up with this family.
Family adopted a perfect dog. Then a neighbor visit changed their lives.
