When I hit 115,000 subscribers there will be a TREASURE HUNT. I will film a video that will premiere at 9am on a given Saturday, and in that video I will leave a car and the keys at a location. Watch the video, go get the car - but film yourself on your mission. I’ll then edit everyone’s footage into a montage of crazy and we will see who gets the car! So click subscribe on KZbin. Thanks!

You’re describing sniper discrimination mate. But Yank tanks can be a serious nightmare. Thankfully sniper discrimination doesn’t happen on eBay. You’re right, the only way to bid is last minute sniping. Have won lots of cool items with that plan.

You just had a lucky escape. Those 350 diesels are absolutely dreadful. Noisy, unreliable, parts are almost impossible, and they go through injectors like disposable lighters. They also tend to burn oil big time. The petrol version was a fabulous car, and mpg figures were about the same. A petrol Oldsmobile 350 will run for a million miles if looked after, the diesel is likely to mash its head gaskets after about 100k. Think yourself lucky

That extending auction is done on many online auction sites. It has its pros and cons. In reality, it makes it a bit like a normal auction at the end.

Put in a bid at a real live auction that you dont intend to honour, and I'd imagine problems could ensue ? Do the same in an online auction, and nothing much will happen to you, something which numbers of thrill seekers have discovered. Having a finite period in online auctions is a way of making the risks of either loss or gain comparable to that which exists in physical auctions. Auctions are meant to be ever so slightly risky for the seller, and attract bidders by the possibility of scoring a bargain.

It was going to a money pit , it’s a 5.7 litre diesel which was based on the small block oldsmobile 350 petrol engine, GM in the USA realised very quickly it was a bad engine and started swooping out the diesel and fitted a 350 small block in its place Admittedly it’s a surviving example but terrible engine

It's quite normal for online auctions to extend after a last minute bid. It's practically the same with in person auctions. With each bid they look for others to do a higher bid. And depending on how active the bidding is, as well as if there are 2 bidders left and they can see the other thinking and discussing they give it a bit of extra time, or push them with the "going once" etc.
@LewieLeway
@LewieLeway 7 ай бұрын
I agree. I have no idea what the whinge is here. The terms are stated clearly. If you were the seller you would love the idea of the extension. This is how it should be done on ALL auction platforms. It would help do away with the sniper software.

@@LewieLeway The whole point of an auction is that its an immediate test of price point on the day, and so can be either a win for the vendor, or a buyer bargain. Whilst I'd accept your point about a real being there auction allowing for the auctioneer to drag things out, the online situation is rather different ? Basically if a vendor is scared of not making his price point of happiness, then put it in the classifieds.
@LewieLeway
@LewieLeway 7 ай бұрын
@@Fanakapan222 I think you've skipped one of my points. Sniper software. When they are used it takes away the auction aspect. In effect, Geoff was attempting a similar thing. Putting the '3 minute extra' if there's been a last minute bid, negates using sniper software. Online is totally different to an actual auction. That is a test of price on the day. Online you can bid for days/weeks.
@Fanakapan222

@@LewieLeway Sniping just serves to make the online variety of auctions carry something like the same risk of disappointed sellers, or loss for tardy bidders, that real auctions present. Bidders need to decide their limit, and vendors need to accept that whilst they may make a good price, its equally likely they may get a spanking. If online is totally different then dont call it an auction. We could also debate the issue of shill bidding that occurs online, something that's all too easy in the virtual world, but much harder and illegal in the real world.
@LewieLeway
@LewieLeway 7 ай бұрын
@@Fanakapan222 They can call it what they like. That's the point here isn't it? The site makes the rules. You read the rules. If you don't like them you walk away. I don't agree with sniping software which means I would lean towards the kind of site we are talking about here. You prefer the sniping, so you lean towards those kind of sites. The adding extra time way is nearer to an actual auction than sniping. If you're in the room and you bid last minute, then the auctioneer asks the room again if they are all finished. He doesn't take that last minute bid and slam the gavel down.

Geoff, walk away and realize you not getting that car was a blessing in disguise. I owned one of those back in the day. It was given to me by my father-in-law who had bought it new and had had it with the many problems with that 5.7 diesel. It is a giant boat anchor. GM took a 350 small block gas engine and thought they could beef up the crank, put diesel heads on it and raise the compression ratio to 21/1. Then in true GM fashion they used the buying public as a test bed for the engine. Once read that GM put that engine in 10 cars and put a total of 300K combined miles on them before releasing it to the public.

Yes, if I remember correctly, the "development" process for the conversion of that block to diesel was for the engineers to convert one system after another - injectors, pistons, bearings, etc., and just run them to failure. They worked on successive total failures until they achieved some acceptable lifespan for the diesel redesign

Look at it from the seller's point of view, putting in snipe bids right at the end just means that someone who was maybe willing to bid higher will miss out. In a real auction, bidding keeps going for as long as people bid. Some auction sites still allow sniping (ebay) but auctions for larger ticket items like cars, and online auctions being run by actual auction houses do not if they are able to prevent it. So yeah, just bid what you are willing to pay and leave it at that. In this case my feeling is that you dodged a bullet on this one anyway. Let someone else have the headaches that vehicle is sure to create. You could still put in a snipe bid before the three minutes and maybe catch someone napping, but not if they are interested enough to be watching the close of the auction. Yes I've been sniped a few times myself, but I wouldn't have paid more than what my own snipe bid was worth. It is what it is... You just try again later and eventually you will get what you want. There's lots of cars out there, and better bargains to be had.

Online auction site Trademe in New Zealand works the same way. Most people know how the game works. A week or so to let people look at things and the last half an hour or 5 minutes to get your bidding done. Just as a live, in person auction works. You can get used to auctions extending but the real pain in the arse is people who just bid at the end and force the extension so you might end up with the auction overrunning by half an hour or more. eBay does not extend. NZ’s auction site trademe does. I have had a lot of time wasted by late bidders. I do not wait until an auction will auto extend to make my bid, I always allow time for others to counter. The real pains are those who get a bid in in the last second, ensuring a full extension period each time they bid. I suspect it might be a bidding tactic, to wear out your opponent. To be fair extensions make an auction an auction whereas no extensions really make the auction an open tender process.

The Oldsmobile Diesel engine is a series of V6 and V8 diesel engines produced by General Motors from 1978 to 1985. Their design was based on the Olds 350 gasoline engine architecture. A 350 cu in (5.7 L) V8 was introduced in 1978, followed by a 261 cu in (4.3 L) V8 only for the 1979 model year. In 1982, a 263 cu in (4.3 L) V6 became available for both front front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive vehicles. Sales peaked in 1981 at approximately 310,000 units, which represented 60% of the total U.S. passenger vehicle diesel market. This success was short-lived as the V8 version suffered severe reliability issues. Although GM carried out several redesigns, by the time the engine was trouble-free, the damage to its reputation had been done, and it was discontinued after the 1985 model year. The later design V6 diesel did not have the problems of the V8. Very few engines had more impact on the American light diesel market than the Oldsmobile 350 V8. Problems One Oldsmobile engineer who had worked on the V8 diesel told his bosses not to release the hastily developed engine. Needing to meet upcoming CAFE standards, GM forced him into early retirement and released the engine nonetheless.[2] Simultaneous problems with GM's new THM200 automatic transmission made the overall problem worse. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) had been unable to certify the diesel V8 for sale in the state in 1979 and early 1980 as the test cars issued to CARB broke down before the tests could be completed. Of the nine cars supplied to CARB, all suffered engine problems and seven had transmission failures.[2] Myriad lawsuits were filed as several grassroots groups formed to try to get General Motors to acknowledge the issues.[2] In 1980 the Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint which included the diesel engine issues and the transmission troubles, as well as camshaft issues with gasoline V8s.[2] General Motors kept marketing the diesel to the fullest, with 19 of the 23 Oldsmobile models in 1981 being available with the 5.7 diesel.[3] The sales and reliability woes were compounded by a decline in gas prices as well as fuel quality issues, including large volumes of diesel fuel containing water or foreign particles.[4] A class action lawsuit eventually forced General Motors to pay up to 80 percent of the costs of new engines. A large number of cars simply had their broken diesels replaced with conventional gasoline engines. Used car price guides have always indicated much lower prices for diesel-engined cars and they remain undesirable in the collector's market.[5] The Oldsmobile diesel's reputation for unreliability and anemic performance damaged the North American passenger diesel market for the next 30 years.[6][7] Design & Flaws While designing the original 350 cu in diesel, Oldsmobile left the head bolt design and pattern unchanged to enable them to use the same tooling as for the gasoline engines, unlike a proper gasoline to diesel conversion.[8] This led to catastrophic head bolt failures as diesel engines have compression ratios that are as much as three times higher than a gasoline engine.[8] In addition to the head bolt issues, General Motors also decided not to install a water separator in order to cut costs.[8] Low quality diesel fuel was a common problem at the time and most diesels were thus equipped to keep the injector pumps from corroding. Many owners tried to solve this by adding anhydrous alcohol, a common trick to deal with water in fuel, but this instead dissolved fuel pump seals and other parts. The stretchy fuel-pump timing chain was a minor problem in light of the other issues. Poor dealer service training only made all the problems worse.[8] General Motors also carried out several redesigns of the V8's heads, bolts, and various other parts, but by the time the engine was trouble-free the reputation damage had already been done. The later 4.3-liter V6 engine, which arrived for the 1982 model year, did not have the same problems as the V8. The V6 has a denser bolt pattern and Oldsmobile's engineers were given more time to develop and test it.[8]

Extensions are the way to stop people using the "sniping" auto-bidding software that bids on the last second. Personally, I think that's a good thing.

Hi Geoff, if that Oldsmobile has a 5.7 V8 in it beware, they are a gasoline derived engine and prone to faults-ie head gasket failure. I had a Chevy pickup with that diesel engine in. In America they are known as “lemons” I had nothing but trouble with mine.

Yes, I really liked this but left it as it was in France I decided it was too much hassle. £4000 would have been good though. I've had this extension thing on Bidspotter too and it's very annoying. I sell a lot on Ebay and often things shoot up in the last seconds. But I must say that in an in-person auction the bids go on until only one buyer is left.

This sounds like it is standard car auction that has online bidding too.. the auction goes on until only one person is interested at that bid. What you seem to be expecting is an ebay type of auction.. try going to car auctions like BCA to see how car auctions operate.

the BCA runs the auctions for the DVLA on their cherished numbers, and do it the same way, if you bid within the final 30 mins, the end time slides by another 30 mins.

Pretty obviously the auction organisers make a percentage of the selling price, so the higher the price goes the more they make. The photo you showed has a 'reserve not met' at 3000 euros. I never bid on reserve not met, as the reserve is usually pretty high for the item.

There is also no point in having an auction, if at the end the seller says that the highest bid isn't enough. If it isn't enough, then list it at a set price.

Ha ha! I have two '77 Of these Custom Cruiser Wagons. Both are the Diesel 5.7/350 versions. I also have an '82 Nighty-Eight Regancy 4-Door. I eas given these cars by Customer's who originally dropped them off here @work to junk them. Some people don't like the 350 Olds Diesel but I have a few complete Engines from other cars that I've collected over the years. The "SAM--WHITE" Badge on the rear Gate is from Houston Texas. Sam White was at one time the second largest Oldsmobile Dealership in Texas. Also known as SAM WHITES MOTOR CITY was founded in 1948/9. I have several Oldsmobiles which came from that Dealership. The Dealership filed for Bankruptcy in 1998 and it's Property and Inventory seized.

To be fair, that's how a "real" auction works. I've always thought that eBay's way of doing it is a bit daft, and just encourages snipers. Although I agree, yes - it is very annoying because it can't be played 🙂.

Sorry Geoff, most on-line auctions extend the time if there's a last-minute bid. After all, the idea is to get as high a price as possible, so giving other bidders the chance to increase their bid makes sense.

However Geoff, in a live auction, the bids end with a winner or the sale is withdrawn because of the reserve not being met, by it’s own logic it could be extended indefinitely if there are enough determined bidders.
