I work in IT, and have been on a government contract for 9 months. Seeing how government operates internally is scary. I've spent 40 years working on many corporate jobs. All different companies, with their good and bad points (over 20 companies). Working now in government is like a whole new world. The main problem I see is zero accountability, low standards, poor management, low skills and lack of work ethic. There's a lot more I could add. I saw a report today that suggested 1 out of 5 people in the UK might end up working for the government. When so many people work for the government - you will end up with the USSR and all the garbage that comes with it. The government is not only 'not fit for purpose' - it is an anchor sinking the entire country.

A pensioner loses £300 Winter Fuel Allowance, then gets an increase in their road tax, and most probably insurance as well. The government then tells them that they will keep making driving more expensive, but they can save a fortune by spending £20k so that they can drive 4 miles to the supermarket once or twice a week. It's insanity. A car is only polluting when the engine is running. Most cars are only running for a short period of time, the owner is at work all day and it's not being driven while they are asleep.
@NeilBarratt21 сағат бұрын
Agree 100%. Cars doing low mileages are paying the same road tax and insurance as those with high usage. The fairest tax is one on fuel. This then encourages the development and use of highly economical vehicles which can use the infrastructure which already exists; another huge saving.

The entire attitude of government misses the point about car ownership. They simply don’t understand that you drive a particular because you like THAT car. They just see cars as a means to an end. A way to get from A to B with no other factors involved. That’s why they think public transport can do the same job. They also see a driver’s freedom to drive is also a freedom to cause death and injury, but instead of improving training, they want to remove the human factor from transport all together. All this proves is that ALL politicians have absolutely no grasp of psychology and no idea how any of this works, which makes them utterly unqualified to make any decisions about private car ownership.

You are spot on with your vision of the future Geoff. The young today appear to be completely indifferent about vehicles and have very little interest. It’s a terrible situation for the economy of this once great country. The ‘misguided’ focus of the government is to break the attachment that the majority of ‘older’ people have with the traditional vehicles and are hell bent to change the views of the younger generation, that EV’s are the answer, manipulating figures to portray they are ‘clean’ and will save the planet? Which they will not. Who is manipulating the government to believe any of this? Yes, the future will change as it’s always has, the car industry has to (as they have proven to be over the years) produce better and cleaner engines, but why do they think ev’s are any cleaner when most independent reports warn the direction they are going in is wrong and just too fast. Battery power in some form probably will be a future choice but only when they have improved the product (battery replacement and charging has to be a viable option) and the infrastructure is in place and recharging is a cost effective option. ICE using sustainable fuels can also be an option. There has to be a choice unless there are other plans and they just want us to be priced out of what we would like and we are just told what we have to buy. People need to listen before we sleep walk past the point of no return. Very frightening times.

Very true about how we never used to see the exotica, except on telly or in magazines. When I was a kid I had loads of Corgi, Dinky, and Matchbox, and the exciting ones to me as a small boy were just toys, they weren't out on the roads where the family cars, buses, and trucks lived. My uncle's brother drove a petrol tanker for Conoco, but he also used to cover for the boss's chauffeur on occasion, and one time when I was about eleven or twelve he came round to my uncle's house in a Jensen Interceptor. He'd dropped off the boss for a meeting and had a couple of hours to kill, so he called in for a brew, and my mum just happened to pop in to see her sister, with me in tow, so I got to see this fabulous car. I wasn't allowed to take my grubby fingers inside it, but those minutes walking round it in amazement at what was a spaceship compared to the Morris Minors, Austin 1100s, and Triumph 1500s I'd walk by most days, left an indelible memory. Strangely though, if I won the Euromillions I wouldn't be buying such a car, nor an MP4/12C, nor a Zonda, which are my two favourite supercars. I'd buy myself a little field, have it tarmaced into a small car park, and stuff it with cars like an SD1, P5B, 2500PI, Singer Gazelle, Wolseley Hornet, Mini 1275 GT, MG Maestro, Saab 900, Humber Hawk, Hillman Minx, Volvo Amazon, Sunbeam Alpine, Austin Cambridge... Mostly British, mostly sixties to eighties.

I'm a simple man with simple tastes, so if I got a big lottery win, I'd buy a medium sized warehouse somewhere out in the countryside, get planning permission to install a mezzanine living area, then kit out the ground floor with every mechanic/engineering tool I wanted. I'd get a couple of Mk3 Capris, convert one to be a ballistic tandem electric motored rocket ship (For trips into the city), then the other would get a tweaked 2JZ-GE from a Supra, a R154 gearbox, and a significantly less agricultural independent rear suspension setup from something more modern. The rest off the warehouse space would get occupied with anything from the late 70's to the early 2000's that I found interesting. Possible candidates being, a Lotus Esprit SE V8, a Lancia Delta Integrale Evo 2, a Volvo 740 turbo estate, A Mk1 Mazda MX5 with a modest turbo kit (200bhp should be plenty), a Mk2 LWB Transit, a 88" AND a 109" Series 3 Land Rover with more torquey diesel engines fitted (but ones that were still fully mechanical, and able to run on straight veg oil if that became necessary), and maybe a good Ford RS200 replica......... Oh, and an extensive collection of new/reconditioned spares for everything I owned so that I'd never be at the whim of parts suppliers saying that something was not available anymore. I could quite easily spend the rest of my days tinkering in my spacious workshop. Maybe occasionally renting out ramp time to interesting people who had interesting project cars they wanted to work on, or teaching kids the skills necessary to work on their own old cars (Sheet metal fabrication, Welding, Machining basic replacement parts, painting, etc).

My mom had a Datson 280zx when I was little. I've ALWAYS wanted one. You're right, you can't beat the sound and feel of a fast gas engine car. Electric just isn't the same.

Modern cars are too isolating. Way back in the day when I started driving you had simple engines etc, you could feel the road and know what was happening through the steering wheel. The best and worst thing they did was change from Cross Ply to Radial tyres. I could drift vehicles with ease (before it was even called drifting) and be in control. Then they introduced crossplys which grip much better..... until they don't at which point you have a crash. Newer drivers do not know when they have reached to the break away point, so push their luck.

A major, not ever mentioned problem with EV’s is that most of them will come from China. So when you buy one, your money goes to China, and your country is poorer, unless China buys the same value of your stuff. Which they do, however whilst you buy friviously, China buys strategically. They buy your real estate, services, businesses, ports etc. When you car dies in 10 to 15 years, you’re left with nothing, but China owns your house, metaphorically speaking. Think about that next time you buy a Chinese product.
@kevinjones3900Күн бұрын
China will sell you a diesel heater for 100 pounds ISH. Our European brothers want 600 pounds . They are greedy are you surprised people buy Chinese products.

If I won the lottery the first vehicle I would buy is a new Ford F150 because I live in Canada and it’s cold and snowing. I’d want a reliable warm vehicle with lots of room that I didn’t care in the least what happened to it because it’s easily replaced. I would use it to go look at cars that I really wanted but couldn’t drive right now because of the weather.

Also I have noticed that the most loved (hated) Mayor Of London is dead set on getting his pay per mile going and has published the prices. Remember if you live in London you are exempt if your plastic oblong things with numbers and letters mysteriously disappear overnight. All these schemes utilising monitoring what cars enter net zero zones require the plastic oblong things with letters and numbers to make sure they charge you accordingly.

@SierraNovemberKilo well it does have pedals. Usually 2 or 3 which would help it identify as a bicycle.

Geoff you are spot on with the types and ages of cars we would buy with a big lotto win! In my case it would be 1) Lambo Miura sv. (then clone it with modern materials and engine etc. to use as a regular vehicle) 2) fully restored Lotus Elan. 3) Face lifted original Subaru Forester 2lt turbo. 4) Resto modded Hillman Avenger Tiger. & 5) Saab 900 turbo. 6) VW type 2 campervan with the Subaru H6 turbo engine & 6 speed box. & finally 7) MK ll Jaguar fully restored with fuel injection & 5 speed box! etc. etc.

I would immediately buy a year one restomod 1977 Pontiac Trans Am, when I was a child there were a reasonable number of Musclecars rolling around, ( I am 53) nothing had massive capacity V8’s apart from American cars, I do own a 3rd gen 5.0 Camaro that I have owned since 2000, unfortunately went self employed and the car has sat for ages as van became the transport , but 14 years of daily drive v8 at least. Modern cars, even supercars are shite! Merry Christmas Geoff and family.

CTR and Shmee, to a much greater degree (and many others like them), will never cover important issues to the depth and detail required because they have a vested interest in their brands promoted by the medium of KZbin. Cowardly? Yes, because we're looking into an abyss. They're the kind who will only focus on their own incomes and not want to rock the boat - thats for others to do. In any case, they will only seek to position themselves for maximum profit. The legwork is to be done by anyone but them.

Maybe have to buy a race track, for when they ban ICE cars from the road, you could still rag a turbo diesel around the track on Red diesel or cooking oil.
