I loved all my old Volvo estates from the 740’s. 850’s and V70’s and even drove the 850 T5’s at work.

Exactly my opinion. I started with the Volvo 240 station wagon, then a Volvo 740 station wagon - both with the 2.3 liter engine without a turbocharger. Most recently I had an 850 station wagon with a 2.5 liter 10V engine. I was impressed with all of them and despite their age they showed little signs of wear. High quality that is worth preserving.

I think the pre DPF D5 is arguably the best engine Volvo ever did - and maybe the best engine ever from all makes for its' combination of reliability, longevity, fuel economy, performance.

@@lint8391 It does appear to have the perfect combination of both good performance and economy. The car never does less then 40mpg, sometimes nudging to 50mpg, and it's also surprisingly fast. And it's done just less than 240K miles too !

The world is a better place for the presence of this old Volvo wagon. My favourite colour. 261,000 miles. Only just run in. It could easily outlive all of us here. Basic maintenance and the odd used spare. We’ll not see the like of this again.

I’ve the same alpine in my MK3 Golf and it’s a great old stereo, which I picked up off Facebook and you can plug an Old £10 IPhone 4 or iPod in the back and keep the usb free on the front. I’ve got a cheap 16gb 6th iPod hidden behind the dash of mine connected up and it sounds fantastic even though standard VW speakers. Yours looks like it hasn’t had that much use as the symbols normally wear off on the blue forward button.

Replace the original smallish Mitsu H13C6 turbo for a slightly bigger HL13G6 from a 2,5l XC70 (let a machinist friend do the small adaptations needed), regulate to 0.8 bar manifold pressure, and you have a modern performance 940. Downside is people will ask you to all the time to transport stuff like new doors from the building materials shop because even the 10 cm shrunk in length cargo bay 850/V70 won't accommodate those.

Love it. Last of the proper Volvos imo, love mine with its hybrid turbo, chipped and full SS exhaust. Mines a Celebration runout model. Suprises lots of newer stuff, only downside is circa 25mpg.

I can beat that - although I dont have photo evidence. I bought myself an 850 T5 - and absolutely incredible machine - wish I had never sold it. It was in Aubergine. My now ex wife needed and estate car and it had to be an auto due to knee issues. And add came up for a low miles 240 estate auto, so we went to look as you do. It was a 2.3 850 auto non turbo, that looked exactly like my T5, in Aubergine. Arms where ripped of and we had matching him and hers volvos

Drove an 850 the other week on the job. Good driver, not the best of shape being a "parts delivery vehicle" for some reason. Insanely comfortable seats! blew me away. Can never go wrong with one of these old classics in good condition. Ignore fuel mileage etc lol

I've been driving for 37 years, I've had a reasonable amount of cars in my time but I never bought a Volvo, I don't even know why or how that happened! The 850 T5 R did catch my eye a few times but that's as far as it went. I've never even driven a Volvo!

Achilles heel of later 940's is the double-mass flywheel that inevitably becomes clunky in time, replacements are pure unobtainium, reverting to the old solid flywheel is possible but with drawbacks. Otherwise everything essential is available for very decent prices.

Those are an original Volvo wheel option design "Pholus", I have them on my own 940 and recently bought one to have a matching spare. Boxy? It's all relative ... Looking around on the supermarket parking lot you can't but notice the average car is getting more 'blobby' and undistinguishable by the day, and thereby my good old 940 (and remember the 740 was even much sharper edged) is by default becoming more 'boxy' to the eye. But more and more people come up to me to compliment me with the quietly self-confident design that has aged so well, they seem to miss that in the modern carscape. The 940 Estate is on its way to become a classic cult car, prices for sorted cars are rising for several years already.

My wife was trying to rip the door handle off someone's car a few years back. MK2 Mondeo in Aubergine. A fairly rare colour so to have another one in the same carpark was super rare. I stood by the other one as my wife looked in the back for our daughter, I kept saying she is in the back of our car. After several failed attempts to remove the handle I said well that's not our car... Our car is over there., she dived into our car and hid in the back rather red faced.
