I bought it on a blind buy, and when i received it, i hated it.... at first anyway. I was like wtf? Too me it actually smelled like some sort of ladies perfume from the 1890's, with all the iris and such. But then i grew to love it, especially the dry down which didn't smell like an old lady at all. To me it smelled like paper out of the printer, but then also roses and cherries etc. No other fragrance like it. Very unique. One of my favorites actually.

I love the way your response evolved from something like an initial, nearly involuntary repulsion, an immediate recognition why this one would be "hate-worthy", into a gradually blooming appreciation of its counter-intuitive appeal. I had exactly the same response. From that instantaneous "Whoa, this stinks!" reaction all the way to, "I just gotta have this stuff, I love it." Not that you went all the way to "love it", but you certainly progressed to a genuine appreciation. Funny enough, though, I'm no "Alpha Male," not by a longshot, but I'm extremely individualistic and insist on wearing what brings me aesthetic pleasure in the moment and I'm looking for zero compliments or "wow-factor". Love the way it finally brought you a smile and evoked a "Yeah, this is nice." You hit the nail on the head: there's art at work in this stuff.

When I was 14 an uncle gave me one as a birthday present, at first I didn't like it much, so I didn't use it much, but as I was growing and changing my mind about life, I started to use it and loved it, it lasted for almost two years of daily use for me, so when I was 16 I stopped using it, and used a lot of other stuff through life. I saw this one on sale on Amazon the other day and gave it a shot, and I'm obsessed with it, I can't believe how much I like it. I'm 38 BTW, so it has been a long time, but it is as good as I remember it and and I like it a lot more now. Specially for the price.

There is also an after shave as well that's available from time to time at the rack stores.

It’s one of the finest men’s fragrances. I think it contains vetiver, musk and a wood note, possibly sandalwood. It’s worn on the body is a single spray. I used to follow men on the subways in New York just to sit in front of them to smell their fragrance. Body heat increases the diffusion of the scent into the surrounding air. As for age, if you’re wearing grey flannel you’re a banker or law professional. I’d start using it at around age 40 (although I started using it in my early 20s.)

I have loved Grey Flannel since I was a kiddo back in the 80's. I recall it being expensive back then. Definitely way out of my age range then but at 40 now, still love it and I think its finally something I could wear in public. Usually just around the house because it is divisive. Definitely a powerhouse frag, lasts for ever, sillage is strong, and it can project like the sun if you spray too much. Like a half pump of the atomizer is plenty good for me. More than a couple and you will probably clear rooms. I don't really like to fog people out, an aura around me is fine and Grey Flannel needs very little to do so. Enclosed spaces full of people, probably not a good idea, outdoors, game on! Also, I have an 80's vintage bottle and its basically the same scent but a little more potent.

The girl who really loved the smell of this on my body is my GF for over 12yrs now so.. And with all the colognes I've ever worn, this is the one she's been asking me for since my last bottle ran out.. I wear it LIGHTLY--definitely no overspraying!--on days when I know I'm going to be at the office but mostly to myself. If I were crammed shoulder-to-shoulder in a cubicle with others, no, I'd never wear this one there. But I've got my own office, fairly spacious, and I like to wear a fragrance that will subtly create an almost subliminal "ambience" for whoever walks in. They might not even know they smelled a "cologne" but they're vaguely aware of an impression (and it changes from day to day, which is also fun). Whether it's Grey Flannel, or Encre Noire, or Comme des Garcons Rouge, I love wearing something that's off-beat, not "seductive" but idiosyncratically intriguing, something that suggests a certain "world" of experience. An experience I can continue enjoy as well as the day wears on and the fragrance develops (I can steal sniffs to the wrist when no one's looking).

Grey Flannel is a masterpiece. You think it's linear in your review, but the drydown of it is sublime. Hopefully you've worn it a few times to work it out yourself. Never judge a fragrance on the opening, especially if you haven't mascerated it first. My 200ml bottle is about 3 years old now, and it's one of my easy reaches in Spring. It's almost criminal how cheap it is. Put it on straight after a shower or both and it lasts all day and just gets better and better. For a non 'crowd pleasing' scent, I've had sooooooo many women compliment me on this, and they nearly always say the same thing - I'll paraphrase but it's mostly they like that man smells like a man and not like ice cream. Drakkar Noir also has that same effect on women.

I don't pick up anything animalic. Grey Flannel has a fresh yet deep aroma that reminds me of a nice green bar of soap such as Irish Springs (Fougere/barbershop like). I'm guessing it's from the galbanum & pettigrain and various floral notes (I wonder if there's lavender). It has a subtle powdery note from the iris & a nice touch of earthiness from the oakmoss & vetiver. It doesn't smell bad at all. However, those who frequently buy blue & citrusy fresh fragrances are most likely not going to enjoy Grey Flannel since it is different than the mass appealing modern fragrances of today.

Im a female and i rocked this fragrance through the 80s and 90s. I remember smelling that fragrance on a man i worked with back in the 80s (who was a total A**hole) who smelt so damned sexy with that on that even though he was a total prat he could have been totally do-able! It's definitely reminiscent of a forest, not the thick bush in NZ where i grew up, but real forest, with dirt smells, mossy surrounds, lush heavy smells and the violet leaves.... they add a more in depth smell. The actual violet topnotes come more from the leaves more than anything. Its a beautiful complex fragrance and reminds me of darker (as in under the tree canopy) walks ive had in european forests, and i have to agree its definitely not a suntanned "shirts off its summer" sort of smell it comes into its own in the cooler months. I want to buy another bottle of it now...

Interesting my bottle smells better after being opened for a few months, the shrillness in the opening mellowed down and the cold damp woody mossy violet take center stage sooner.

That's called maceration. People in the frag world do that on purpose as it gives the oils time to infuse together. Whenever you get a new scent, spray it 10 times then stash it away somewhere dark and cool for a few months, then it becomes what it was always meant to be. Some houses do it before bottling, but it's rare because it's expensive to sit on stock. Think of it like red wine, needs some air to hit before it really hits the peak. You've inadvertently learned a valuable lesson organically. Most of us learn it via advice.

I’m not sure what this guys talking about. I finally found this at Ross. This reminds me of my grandfather. He never wore this Colon but it reminds me of his Budweiser cans with cigarettes put inside. When your first spray this smell compares to an empty can of Budweiser with a cigarette. Obviously it’s a better sent with the Cologne but that is the first impression I get. Later on when it dries down it does become a more bearable scent.

Grey Flannel is an office and warehouse cologne. The message is, you're wearing a cologne, you're smelling pleasantly and therefore approachable, but you're not there to outdo your boss, you're also there to work and not seduce anyone and your chest and shoulders are not available for someone to rest their head on. You can wear this when hanging out with friends. If you wear this on a dinner date, you're sending a message that you have no plans beyond eating the food. lol. i have one and wear it everyday. I actually pair it with retro shirts.

First thing that came to my mind was as a child in the early 90's when my parents took me to this Alpine Forest Retreat and early in the morning after rain the fresh smell of morning dew dripping from green leaves in a garden. At first the scent felt really bold and kind of overwhelming but I fell in love with it instantly since I am a fan of strong scents such as Hugo Boss # 1, Aramis 900 & 950 etc... so this was sort of up my alley. I also love the bottle and it really takes 2 good sprays from a distance for it to work its magic.
