Here, Anshuman is right, the way Yamuna turns to meet with Ganga is major contributing factor(geographically) for Yamuna to be called as tributary of Ganga. In terms of Hydrology, volume and catchment area also matter, hence River Yamuna is a tributary of River Ganga as 2 out of 3 factors defining tributary comes in favour of River Ganga. ps: there is still consideration regarding the catchment and volume of both the rivers as the data we have right now is obsolete.

The main stream of a river network is decided based on the stream order. Stream order is a measure of the order of the stream. For instance, in a particular scheme, the smallest rivulets in a river basin (i.e. the initial streams) is considered as a primary order stream. Two primary order stream joins to form a secondary order and so on. When streams of different orders join, the new stream has the order of the highest stream. If we consider the Gangetic basin, what we identify as Ganga has the highest stream order and it is the longest stream. Yamuna on the other hand is smaller, terminates at Ganga stream with a stream order lesser than Ganga. The question has to be answered considering the complete basin (Gangetic basin) not looking at the individual origin. The exact location of merger is as well irrelevant here. Its just that Yamuna joins Ganga when the stream order of ganga is larger than yamuna at the merging point.

It depends on volume and also the distance it covers before meeting other river. So I think Ganga covers a larger distance than yamuna before meeting to yamuna...Thats why it is called ganga after prayagraj

Actually the correct answer is the depth of the river. Ganga's depth is more than yamuna. So the name Ganga goes on.... Also in Devprayag where Bhagirathi & Alaknanda meet, both these rivers' depth are the same. So a new name has to be given to their confluence. Hence the new name Ganga was chosen. A tributary contributes its water to a river. A distributary is a branch of the main river where it branches out before entering the sea. The flow of water decides. Its from a tributary to a main river and from main river to distributaries. Volume has no part to play.

⁠The length of River Yamuna is greater than River Ganga till the confluence point that is Triveni Sangam. The way Yamuna turns to meet with Ganga is major contributing factor(geographically) for Yamuna to be called as tributary of Ganga. In terms of Hydrology, volume and catchment area also matter, hence River Yamuna is a tributary of River Ganga as 2 out of 3 factors defining tributary comes in favour of River Ganga. PS: there is still consideration regarding the catchment and volume of both the rivers as the data we have right now is obsolete.

It's quite simple. Assume that Ganga did not exist. In that hypothetical scenario, Yamuna would continue flowing in her own direction. Currently, both Ganga and Yamuna flow in their respective directions. When they cross paths, one of them must change direction. In this case, it is Yamuna. When Yamuna meets Ganga, it essentially gives a "tribute" to Ganga-this tribute being the water that gets added.
