I was once on a flight from Hong Kong to London that flew over Mongolia. I had never left Oceania before this trip, so as we were flying over Mongolia, I looked out the window, and the landscape beneath me was the most alien I have ever seen. Just this vast cold looking desert, sand dunes with ice in them stretching out in all directions as far as the eye could see. it really did look like I was in space looking down at Mars or something.

How tables have turned, also biggest irony is that without Russia/USSR Mongolia would have definitely been part of China.
@TheArklyte6 жыл бұрын
That's actually historical chinese policy(at least stereotypical) - everyone who invades them eventually ends up becoming chinese. Conqueror paradox of sorts. UK had been in similar relationship with USA for some time(even if they won't admit it) and maybe India will also become UK's "bigger brother" in upcoming decades... just maybe... not until the end of 21st century probably though.
@ragefacememeaholic53666 жыл бұрын
Well you also have to remember while the mongols were conquerors, they were a tribal people. Tribal peoples being less culturally influential as they don't hold on to vast amounts of territory for very long. Also many Mongols act more like foreigners than other Asians would because of there extensive tribal/nomadic past. These types of people being more easily influenced. While their culture would never be erased it will definitely be more like the peoples they conquered.

0:45 I think it is important to mention that “eternal blue sky” is a translation I often see of “Tengri” who is a (sort of) monotheistic god figure in tengrism, the historical religion of Turko-Mongolic peoples. Tengri is often thought of and referred to as “the eternal blue sky” (at least from translations I have read) so it might be better to think of the meaning of Mongolia to be “the land of tengri/god” rather than “the land of the eternal blue sky” Anyone who actually speaks Mongolian please inform me if am not understanding something though.

In 1936 Soviet and Mongolians armies defeated Japanese invaders in Khalhin Gol. Mongolia also supplied Soviet army with tons of supplies including half a million trained horses during Great Patriotic War (ww2). Excellent overview on Mongolia. It is worth noting that much of Mongolia, especially parts of the Gobi have turned out to be a loaded with dinosaur fossils, including nests containing fossilized dinosaur eggs. Also, the tomb of Genghis Khan has never been found and is believed to be in Mongolia and to contain almost unimaginable wealth in gold, etc., etc. Satellite imagery has been in attempts to locate the tomb.

@Suyash Mallik They usually hang out at foreign locations, like Loafology (Traditional European style bakery owned by an Austrian woman, sells stuff like Polish rye and Parisian and Traditional baguettes), other than Loafology you'll find them at Kohsar market, which is a really westernized market that I go to a lot. Sometimes you'll just see them around the street. That's just talking about Europeans though, Chinese people are quite common, you'll see some other asians around as well, if you go to Taxila you might see buddhists there since there are a few monasteries there (Jaulian and Mohra Muradu), there's also the Dharmarajika stupa. Most of the foreigners are usually either German, British or Chinese. I'd say there are definitely more foreigners in Islamabad than Karachi or Lahore though.

Faith tbh I have not seen so many Asian people in my life, but from what I have seen I can say that Mongolian people are more dark-skinned and look more like Central Asian folks ( for instance Uzbek people), when Chinese people have a lighter skin and tend to have more narrow facial features. Although, the language is quite different. Mongolian language has some similar words with Turkic languages what I can identify as the Azeri speaker.
