In the German guess, that was not the flag of the Netherlands, that was the flag of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, which Kiel, the biggest city the guess was close to, is the capital of. Also, just because a word sounds or looks close to a word you know, doesn't mean it has anything to do with that. Schwentinental is the name of the city. It has nothing to do with Schwein or Schwerin.

A couple of scandinavian hints: Finish and Icelandic are very different from the Khalmar-languages (Danish, Norwegian, Swedish). Denmark and Norwegian have more in common (considering Norway used to be under danish influence), thus they both use Ø, Æ and Å. Swedish is much more prone to use Ä and Ö (umlaut). To differentiate between danish and norwegian, usually norwegian has a bigger focus on more harsh, consonant-filled pronunctiations, while Denmark has some more soft, liquid pronunctiations. It sounds a bit vague, so let me use the truck at the end for reference: It said "Biffkjøtt med mørhetsgaranti", which means "Vealmeat with a tenderness-guarantee" - it's norwegian. In danish it would be "Bøfkød med mørhedsgaranti" which, for one thing has more Ø's (we do love our weird-ass, "unique" symbols), and while there are more t's in norwegian (harsh), there are more d's on danish (soft).

China uses mainly simplified Chinese but also sometimes traditional Chinese, while Taiwan uses exclusively traditional Chinese. The square house character is the same in both and is read "tai." Since Taiwan is called "tai"wan and its biggest city is "tai"pei, the "tai" character appears fairly often, especially in reference to a location. The character "tai" is used in China as well. "Tai" means an elevated structure or platform and is used in words like podium or terrace, also tv and radio stations
@codypin12408 жыл бұрын
Japanese have a type of characters call漢字,which is just Chinese characters, but it is in simplify Chinese, only Hong Kong and Taiwan uses traditional Chinese, which on the sign"司馬言斯"the "馬"is in traditional Chinese ("马" is the simplify Chinese version or the word, they mean the same thing, horse)
@IL421338 жыл бұрын
Kanji is not simplified Chinese. In fact, I believe kanji is composed entirely of traditional Chinese characters.
@kookoo60148 жыл бұрын
Simplified Chinese was introduced in China and Macao around 1960. Singapur, Taiwan, Hong Kong etc still use traditional Chinese because of that. Japanese imported its Chinese character much, much earlier (around 600-700 a.c. I believe) so they are derived from Traditional Chinese. You are completely right with what you said about 馬 and 马 though.

There are Chinese characters that look like a square with a roof above them, if that's what Sinvicta meant by a "house" (By which I mean Mandarin Chinese characters, though I don't know if they change between Mandarin and Cantonese). Also, Japanese that looks like Chinese is literally Chinese; Japan used China's characters for a while before they developed their own style, so it's very difficult to distinguish the two if you're looking at old characters alone.

"I can tell the difference between the Chinese and Japanese language" - sometimes yes, but kanji is basically inherited Chinese characters. The characters you saw 'could' have been Japanese kanji but usually it's mixed with hiragana/katakana which are squiggly lol. There are no squiggly or loopy Chinese characters. Also Taiwanese is a different spoken language, but in Taiwan they uses traditional Chinese characters. Mainland China uses simplified Chinese characters, which Mao replaced traditional characters with during the Cultural Revolution in order to increase literacy.
@ktktktktktktkt8 жыл бұрын
NL that was actually just straight chinese. Normally in japanese you'll see a mixture of chinese characters and hiragana, katakana and there weren't any kana on that sign which would imply it's not japanese.

Chinese vs Japanese is interesting, Japanese is mainly written in Kanji, which is the same characters as are used in Chinese (though the Chinese call it Hanzi). However, Japanese continues to use the traditional forms of these characters, while mainland China uses a simplified form of them, meanwhile Taiwan and Hong Kong continue to use Traditional characters. So if you can't actually read the language telling Japanese from Traditional Chinese...isn't really probable. Of course Japanese also has Hiragana and Katakana to write out the sounds and write foreign words.
@whateverwhateverwhatever81028 жыл бұрын
sinvicta, taiwanese text IS chinese. The symbol with the 'little house' is a chinese character. However, Taiwan and Hong Kong uses traditional chinese characters whereas China uses simplified. But it's still just chinese.
