Rockingham! It sounds paradoxical but I felt your pain all the more because I knew exactly where it was from the first view (for no other reason than that I used to live very nearby). That kind of serendipity must always be happening for a viewer somewhere, of couse -- except that never for me when I'm the player myself! You were right about the stone ( not "bricks" by the way: they have to be baked ): that band of limestone, used for building, stretches from S. Gloucestershire / N. Somerset right across to as far east as Northamptonshire: it can be honey-yellow in the Cotswolds but, in my observation anyway, gets darker and greyer the further NE you go.

FYI - I think you ALWAYS start facing north, so in these 'no moving' tries you'll always be looking north. I actually use this myself when I'm trying for speed on worldwide mode to determine which hemisphere I'm in. If there are shadows and they are pointing north-ish, I'm probably in the northern hemisphere. Further, if the shadows are more-or-less pointing straight away or towards, you can roughly determine latitude (especially if you can tell the season).

His knowledge is exceptional. I can say that the UK is slightly more forgiving in geoguessr than USA by dint of being smaller though. One can reasonably guess the rough area of a place if they have their eye in (Wales and Scotland look nothing like England, the south west has a distinctive look, north and south is fairly easy in urban areas, the home counties is a bit of a guess but it's not a large area) whereas guessing some barren farmland is really tricky in the states.
