This the recording of an invited lecture delivered by D. N. Espinoza for PGE 383 CARBON CAPTURE & STORAGE taught by Prof. K. K. Mohanty. The lecture covers fundamentals of geomechanics applied to carbon geological storage.

Hi Dr. Espinoza: Thank you again for the great and inspiring lecture! One question here - How do you constrain the "cap" envelope at 25:53? Is it essentially the same as the cap in the modified Cam-clay model?

Hi D MK, this is just a "illustrative" cap in the Mohr circle space to explain boundaries to the Mohr circle. Yes, the actual cap should come from models like Cam-clay in a p'-q or I_1-J_2 space; e.g. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWWqqJafpb6dhaM .

Hi Dr Espinoza, do you have any papers on carbon sequestration and different failure modes that might occur? I am trying to write a paper on applying shear and tensile failure criteria on coal- carbon seq for various wellbore orientations

Hi Dr, how effective is CCS in a poor quality reservoir with great cap in highly deviated well vs the vertical well?

No easy answer for this problem. An answer for this requires a specific site and collaboration from geologists, geophysicists and engineers.
