It's a function of both. Sponge filters doing a bad job of mechanical filtration and geos constantly sifting substrate, You will be in good shape with your set-up. I have my sand about an inch deep (when it's not being completed moved around by the fish). : -) If the geos are breeding I'm not sure how they will be with angels. @vaughanjattan74754 жыл бұрын
Do you think a geophagus tapajos would do good in a 40 gallon breeder with Bolivian rams?
@beandrag90195 жыл бұрын
You didn’t stress enough how much these fish truly NEED a very sizable amount of veggies in their diet, otherwise very good video! I’d recommend any other geo personally, tapajos don’t get as cool of jewling or iridescence and are way more aggressive. Abalios are the best just cause they only get to six inches. You’ll find them under the name ‘surinamensis’ which you will never actually see; these fish are almost always mislabeled. If you get someone who knows what they’re doing you can possibly get winemilleri and sveni, but you have to reallllly get lucky and find a reputable breeder or get them at a swap if you’re looking for stuff like Agryosyctus, Mirabills, or other cool stuff. You’ll also get sold Geo altifrons; like the one in your big tank, under the name surinamensis.
@beandrag90195 жыл бұрын
You can tell the difference in these species mainly by the size of the fish, their stress bars, certain species specific markings on fins or the operculum, their lateral mark and their adult coloring. These fish are always mislabeled and kind of neglected in terms of the true star power they can bring to tanks. You really do want a larger group of about 12 geos to make them feel comfortable. I personally have four abalios, three sveni, one altifron and a couple unidentifiable youngsters, but I’m getting some Mirabilis in from aqua bid and a couple of winemilleri to round off my group at about 15 or so just to make them feel more comfortable and to let them establish their pecking order.
@beandrag90195 жыл бұрын
I keep them with rainbows; specifically kamaka and dwarf neons because they’re cooler to me and stay a bit smaller, as dither fish to help them feel a little more comfortable. I also have a couple of cats like two bumblebees and a banjo just for some extra clean up and spice. I keep one glass knife with them as they also live around the same areas as most geophagus, but they tend to kill each other in groups in my experience. Even at a small size in a 125, so there’s just one left.
@beandrag90195 жыл бұрын
Also never mistake satanoperca for geophagus because they are almost always referred to and labeled as so. Stuff like jruipari (probably botched the spelling) Lilith, three spot daemon, etc... they all get much larger and slightly more aggressive, most over a foot long. They have flatter foreheads and more of a speckled stress bar as opposed to a geophagus’s uniform stress bars or a gymnogeophagus’s sharper more jagged, but consistent stress bars.
@PrimeTimeAquatics5 жыл бұрын

I've been researching quite a bit on how I wanted to stock my new (to me) 55 gallon tank, I settled on geophagus, I saw a tank online with tapajos and lemon tetra, well while I was at a chain pet store I saw some serpae tetra and on an impulse bought them thinking they would look good with the tapajos. Come to find out the sepae's are apparently different than the lemon tetra and have a bit of a reputation as fin nippers...that being said, should I still introduce the young geo's to the tank with the serpae already there and wait? Or is there too much of a risk to the young geo's? The tetras look pretty young as well, there are currently 9 serpae in my 55 gallon with a couple plants.

How many (if any) would you think could work in a 55 gallon with 5 or so angels? Would they bother each other in your opinion? I’ve had an empty 55 for a couple years, and I’d like to start it up in the next few months and have been looking for smaller species Geo stocking ideas
@PrimeTimeAquatics6 жыл бұрын
I have mixed them in the past. Still, a back plan might be a good idea. If anyone starts breeding there could be issues. I might just go with one given the angels will get big.

Prime Time Aquatics Ok thanks a lot! Great video, I’ve seen some info about them saying they liked small groups like 4-8, I just didn’t know if they would be ok as a solo specimen or not?

They seemed just fine when I kept them solo.

Prime Time Aquatics Ok awesome, if keeling a solo Tapajos with 5 angels in a 55 gallon, planted (java fern attached on driftwood) and sand, what would be a decent Tetra to have as a school? 6.8 ph, 2GH, 2KH, 77-79 degrees

How big tank do they need? Tankmates?
@PrimeTimeAquatics6 жыл бұрын
Depends on how many you keep. A group would do best in a 75 gallon or larger. One could be ok in a 40 breeder. A lof of the medium-s-zed tetras or rasboras, severums, smaller South American cichlids like nanoluteus, sajica, multispinosa, could all work.
@videogazer801 Жыл бұрын
They are also great for keeping the tank clean

Can u put them with some calvus Cichlids?
@PrimeTimeAquatics3 жыл бұрын
Probably not - only because I don't think the Calvus would get any food - these guys eat to aggressively.
@OneToothTwoFish6 жыл бұрын
Wbat do u think of mixing them different types of geophagus
@PrimeTimeAquatics6 жыл бұрын
There is a potential of hybridization. Also, sometimes males will fight with one another. I generally only keep one type of geophagus in a tank at a time. If you try it, just have a back up plan in case they start to fight.

Nice looking Geos!! I have a few tank mate questions. I have 3 geos around 2-3 inches, and was wondering could they be housed with African Peacocks? Also, do you have a suggestion on starting a South American tank- using my 3 Geos in a 125. Thanks again

In a good sized tank - probably.

It's possible, but probably not ideal.

Would they still breed with some kind of tetra above them?
@PrimeTimeAquatics5 жыл бұрын
Yes, but the tetras are really good at picking off babies. It might be beneficial to remove the fry as soon as you see them (at least some of the fry).

How do i see the difference between male and female? I have one atm but need another one and i want the opposit sex for it.
@PrimeTimeAquatics5 жыл бұрын
The only difference I see are the fins are a little longer and the males have slightly more color. I with one on its own it would be hard to determine if it is a male or female unless it's older and the fins are really long.

I have a 75g with 17 Lemon Tetra And 11 Panda Cories, I Was Thinking of getting a group as my show fish. Do you think that’s compatible?
@PrimeTimeAquatics6 жыл бұрын
I don't think the lemon tetras will be an issue. I've had geos in with corys before without issues, but it was usually only one geo, so no breeding was happening. Not sure how they will react if they start protecting eggs and fry - they could get rough with them?

Can you keep just one or two? Do I need a group?
@PrimeTimeAquatics4 жыл бұрын
Depends on your goals. If I just wanted something cool to look at in a community tank I would only get one. If you wanted to get a group, that is certainly doable, but the larger the tank the better. I have four in the 55 gallon, but I don't think that is ideal. If you go the community route, if they start to breed they will push all the other fish to the corners of the tank.
@mostlymowiewowie25444 жыл бұрын
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks so much for replying! I keep 3 severums, 2 Gold One Green, in a 75 gallon atm, I really wanted to add a tank mate that was different and love the look of some Geos I just didn't know if I could just have the one as I don't want to add a group and overstock. I think given the tank size now, the fact that all my fish are juveniles and after watching lots of videos I'm gonna go for a Gold Saum instead though. Upgrading tank down the line will be no issue atall if its needed, I know that for sure so I think it should work out nicely, hope I am correct. I guess adding the geo too would be over stocking right?
