Westerners in this comment section who think Chinese influence is new in the region are like hipsters who think they "discovered Vietnamese food." They don't know history and raced forward with statements that lacked context from a native's perspective. Let me be clear, this is not a defense of China's current presence or any of its political actions but rather from an Asian historical perspective the fact that westerners think this is something "new" severely lacks an understanding of the region's history and identity as a whole. I cringe from a historical and technical perspective more than a moral one. If anything it's a repeating trend like the tides rather than a post- Cold War outrage. The fact that they tend to regard Chinese influence only as PRC is ignoring all the dynasties preceding it: hence my claim of being very short sighted and not from a native POV. For one thing China's history is intimately tied with at least several of the local powers since the very beginning. A good look at several of the nearby nation's histories and you see that ancient polities such as Nanyue (Vietnam), Funan (Cambodia), whose history is largely preserved and kept from the Chinese sources, whose modern name is retained based on what the Chinese historians called them. The Chinese had essentially colonized and occupied Vietnam as part of itself for around 1,000 years- in fact Vietnam was a province during the Han, Sui and Tang dynasties. Socially Vietnam and China shares many similarities, from a Confucian culture to an emphasis on family, revere for elders, and a meritocratic outlook based on education. The Chinese had also maintained extensive trade relationships with the SEA local polities for over 2,000 years since the Qin dynasty. Let's not forget that the SEA was the maritime portion of the Silk Road. The Chinese traded with the Chams of Champa and the Khmers. The Chinese expat community in Thailand is the oldest in the world and has over 1,000 year of history, in fact various Thai kings have Chinese lineages, the Kings of Ayutthaya nominally claimed Chinese heritage. In fact both the militant liberator King Taksin and the Chakri dynasty (of modern Thailand) that succeeded him both claimed Chinese heritage. The entire region- and by extension all the way into modern Indonesia and the Philippines all had extensive trade with the Ming. It's an old not a new phenomenon. If anything Mao's extreme isolationism and Cold War meddling was an aberration. My point being- please harmonize the extant backdrop of existing history with contemporary geopolitics. Each nation's circumstances are different, and like Shirvan's video, please allow for such complexity. After all, to sway an entire region under an oversimplified meta-narrative is rather presumptuous, no?

What westerners are you referring to? What westerners who think that China's influence in the region is new? It is well know that was a influence in the region since the beginning of time. However, Communist China's new militarism and using that military influence in the region to such a extent is rather new in spreading and enforcing that power for China and also for Communism!
@AngryKittens6 жыл бұрын
PRC China is exploiting its neighbors and none of them like the PRC. It's that simple. This coming from a non-westerner. They may have traded with our city-states and kingdoms a long time ago here in maritime SE Asia, but that doesn't mean they own the seas our Austronesians ancestors have been sailing for thousands of years before the first Chinese dynasty. They may have conquered Nanyue, Taiwan, Tibet, and Xinjiang, but the keyword here is _conquer._ It wasn't a voluntary assimilation. And they've destroyed most cultures they've subsumed. We are far smaller and far poorer nations. But that doesn't give PRC the right to push us around. They're a colonial power a century too late and pretending like what they do is completely fine while apparently incapable of understanding why everyone around them, and I mean _everyone,_ hates them. What western powers think is irrelevant. This is what us, Southeast Asians, think of the PRC.

Thailand and laos are probably two most important countries in indochina. First, Thailand has ability to shorten the marine trafic from indian ocean to gulf of thailand. This shortened trafic will benefit Vietnam, myanmar and Philippine. The second important country is Laos. Laos although landlocked can connect 5 countries toghether. Its central position can create great benefit for banking snd trading.

mattia chanon however there are limitations to this and Indonesia has advantages over Thailand. But Thailand has advantages over Indonesia Indonesia advantages *strongest army in ASEAN region (disputed but somehow correct) *manages to quell seperatist groups and make them mostly irrelevant. This can be attributed to the decentralization program of Indonesia after Suharto’s fall, Pancasilla ideology which promotes nationhood with multiculturalism and a strong armed forces. *Is already the regional power in ASEAN *Have friendly neighbors (yes Malaysia is friendly and their rivalry is superficial) Thailand advantages *A lot of land suited for agriculture. *One of the largest rice producer *Have a big manufacturing base specially automobiles *not an archipelago *Has a better road network than Indonesia

indonesia have a strong military indeed it is true since they have a hude population but the problem is that it is still too difficult to mobilize all the troops since the infrastructure is still bad in fect there are still many area that is still hard to deliver food or electricity . thailand have multiculturalism too in the south most are malay in the northerneast are issan (they are thai peaple but more similar to laos , in the center many are chinese dicendent and in the industry zone eastern-center are khmer ,in the northern there are million of myanmar minority that came to live in thailand not to mention about 2million myanmar that came to work in thailand seeking a better life and jobs. Thailand always play both side. During the Cold War, although Thailand remain a major ally with the West and especially the US upfront, there is a "secret diplomatic mission" between Thailand and China. In the later year of the post-WW2 military dictatorship, two children (Wanwai ans Sirin) of PM Plaek's (Phibun) personal advisor and close friend, Sang Phathanothai, was sent to live with Premier Zhou Enlai. "Phibun's government openly pro-western and anti-Chinese, Sang and Phibun devised a strategy to establish a backdoor informal communication channel with the Chinese government. They agreed to send two of Sang's children to be brought up under the auspices of Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai as his wards. A daughter aged eight and a son aged twelve secretly travelled through Burma to Beijing... Sang's daughter, Sirin Phathanothai, would later write a book, "The Dragon's Pearl," about her experiences growing up among China's elite." (from Wikipedia) Today, Thailand have a similar strategy through the personal mission of Princess Sirindhorn, who regularly visit China (total of 20 official visits; she even studies at Beijing University at one point; and already visit all provinces of China). While Thailand business sector have relations with both the West and China

I think this quote from the Thai/Siamese king Rama III at his death in 1851 perfect symbolises the political situation of Indochina during the 19th century, "Our wars with Burma and Vietnam were over, only the threats of the Westerners was left to us. We should study their innovations for our own benefits but not to the degree of obsession or worship.". The situation right now in Indochina is completely different, long gone are the days when thousands of European and American soldiers were stationed in the region, now it appears that old local rivalries have reasserted themselves immediately after the Vietnam War with China invading Vietnam in 1979, Vietnam invading Cambodia in 1978, Thailand having border wars and skirmishes with Laos, Burma/Myanmar and Cambodia with the latest one happening as recent as 2011.

Actually Cambodia has a huge wealth gap between its major international touristic/economic cities such as Siem Reap, Phnom Penh or Sihanoukville , and the rest of the country. I lived in Siem Reap for 2 years , and I could see how the middle class was emerging and the economy growing ( sure with the help of China, but still). In the West , most people believe Cambodia is poor nationwide and all the kids are still running barefoot , but that's a huge mistake and underestimation. Same about Laos with its emerging capital Vientiane. I like Caspian report , but pity that this time, the video didn' t mention about that.

Good video. Keep in mind, however, that the capital of Myanmar Nay Pyi Taw is new, existing only since 2005. And by that time, the military regime had run largely out of steam. The 20th-century fighting happened from the old capital of Rangoon (Yangon). It appears that the new capital was placed in the center to better control the territory, and also to make foreign invasion more difficult. After all, in 2003, the Generals worriedly looked at the Iraq invasion and wanted to secure themselves. The capital is designed in such a way - with wide open spaces - that rioting and urban guerrillas are near-impossible. Yet to this day the city is largely bereft of any real city life, with the populace choosing to flock to the ever-expanding former capital on the coast.

This could be seen by allowing US aircraft carriers to dock in Singapore Changi Naval Base to serve as a counterweight to China. Singapore also share very close ties to Taiwan. And China is not very happy about it. In fact, a few years ago, China confiscated our tanks that were berthing in Hong Kong because it is coming back from a joint military exercise with Taiwan! Waiting for East Africa
@shyshy42736 жыл бұрын
muhammed Omar I’ve heard that east africa will form a federation. Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia has high gdp growth. Somalia, even if the country is divided and is somehow unstable has a homogeneous ethnicity (Ethnic Somali) and is located in a major trading route.
@muhammedomar72686 жыл бұрын
Shylock Shy i dont Think east Africa is capable of making à federation in the foreseeable future wen you look at the current situation. some countries in east africa Have fast growing economy like Ethiopia but there are still à lot to do . And Yeah Somalia is the only homogeneous country in all africa with the longest coastline and full of enterpreners and ressources Wich mâkes It huge potential economy
@shyshy42736 жыл бұрын
muhammed Omar if memory serves me right Rwanda is also homogeneous and the Tutsis and Hutus are castes but the Germans created the classification of the two as races. Also Bots is somehow homogeneous also with the tswana being the main ethnic group which comprises eighty percent of the population. Anyway East African Federation can form but most likely without South Sudan. Also your somehow right that the EAF cannot form as of this moment since most east african countries didn’t unlock their full potential yet.
@muhammedomar72686 жыл бұрын
Shylock Shy..I Dnt know much abt botswana but for Rwanda jst write on google you will see on ur eyes How hutus and tutsis are two very different races.. If there will be any federation in EA It would be Rwanda Burundi uganda kenya and tanzania Bcs they already Have same Official language (KSWAHILI)

Laos only trying to modernized itself and the people of Laos into the brighter future where else the West disregard Laos from that future. Only China is willing to give Laos that future. So mocking us will not change anything accept makes us even greater and determined along side our Chinese counterparts now and the future ahead for both our people!

I thought I do have to agree. Everything Asian do or create. They find ways to cheat and bias the issue into a conflicting argument rather then logical common sense. Some Southeast Asian mainstream society actually do have this thought of trying to think like a White-man and disregard themselves and their race as second class. I am hopping that someday this mind set for all Southeast Asian will change because it rather not favor our people as a race and the region socially and politically in the next future generations to come.

Ying ~ retract your stupid nine dash line and we will believe the benevolent attitude of China, retain it then you are just an imperialists country. We have sacrificed a great amount of blood for our sovereign territories and end European imperialism in the region, we will not replace it with Chinese imperialism.

Laos should merge with Thailand and your economy will go gangbusters and have access to Ports. With a common language base and similar traditions it will transform Laos out of their poverty.
@Lol-ok9kl5 жыл бұрын
Bo Sheek I doubt that. Issan is still very poor, what makes you think Laos would fare better being part of Thailand? Keep in mind Thailand is a very centralised country and everything happens in Bangkok. Laos is very far from Bangkok, it would be another poor Thai region that’s left behind from Thailand’s growth. Laos has access to Vietnam’s ports and is closer to Vietnam’s capital Hanoi. It would be better for Laos to join Vietnam instead.

Nowadays, Vietnamese still call HCM City "Saigon" in daily language or HCM City in both daily and official language. To me as a Vietnamese, Saigon is shorter and sounds better in daily language.

Vietnamese also belongs to the tai-khadai language family , the same as Thai , Laotian , Cambodian and the rest of ethnics within the South East Asia region they are also austro-asiatic , while Chinese are sino-tibetan (orignated in modern day Shanxi province) having been much closer to Mongolian , Manchurian ...their Northern counterparts Islam was introduced to Indonesia through spice trade , muslim preachers came and the archipelago gradually adopted the religion Indochina , Laos , Cambodia are French terms , hence having pronunced them in English is different from the respective native tongues
