A true masterpiece. The greatest American opera. Genius Gershwin! Nothing to envy of the masterpieces of Verdi, Puccini, Richard Strauss and Britten. And this production is truly incredible, with fantastic voices and a large, brilliant orchestra engaged in a very difficult score. Congratulations to everyone indeed!

I am sorry, but nothing come close to this greatness, except maybe Puccini and Mahler. This is Gershwin’s greatest achievement, the best American artwork and the greatest piece of music ever composed in my opinion.

I'm the one who posted this video...I love this singular production, as it's very close to the Houston Grand Opera 1976 production, which I was able to see 3 times..I'm so glad to "meet" someone who was actually part of this production; thank you for your part in the production, it's really a terrific production~ Do you, or possibly, do you know of anyone who has a pristine copy of this production? I did NOT know it was going to be on PBS that night, I was channel surfing, when I found this was going to be broadcast.. I tossed an old VHS tape in the recorder, at slow speed..the result isn't too terrible, but I would love to have a clean, better copy of this production. I've been looking for a better copy since 2002..if you have one, or know of anyone who has a better copy than this, please let me know~ Thanks!

Porgy had me in tears at the closing number. This has to be one of operas great moments in the history of American opera. Of course this precedes another great American opera, Floyd's "Of mice and Men" as well Barber's "Venessa" , but this stands alone in it's artistic scope like no other. You wouldn't hear better singing in any opera company the world over.

To me, this is a WONDERFUL production! Aside from my reply to a comment about the overly dark tone, I enjoyed this production! A highlight for me was the character Crown. Whether Crown is viewed in physical appearance as a muscular and tall bully, or a strapping, BIG bully, there is no denying actor Timothy Robert Blevins' convincing portrayal and interpretation of Crown. Perhaps Blevins' voice sealed the deal for him being casted in this role. It is so well suited for this character. I hear in his voice more of the seductiveness, along with the dominance of the character. It draws you in and hypnotizes, much like Bess is. Thus, making him irresistible amidst his brutal treatment. Additionally, Blevins' acting skills made Crown a believably real character! Simply put, an OUTSTANDING performance!!!

I agree - such an original interpretation that drives home how despicable the character is without being literally huge or bulky. Just his physicality and facial expressions drive it home

For the first time in over 30 years, The New York Metropolitan Opera is presenting a huge NEW production of George Gershwin's "PORGY AND BESS"...The Met has been presenting this new production since September..the ticket pricess are exorbitantly HIGH (from $375 to $875 for EACH ticket) yet, every performance has been sold out. BUT wait...THERE'S MORE! Everyone of you can see this production LIVE from the New York Met on a MOVIE theater screen... the Met will be BROADCASTING a LIVE PERFORMANCE - a ONE TIME live performance in over 2,300 movie theaters all over the world on FEBRUARY 1st, 2020. I live in Dallas, Texas..so I KNOW than this production will be shown at various movie theaters here in Dallas, and Houston.. and other large cities. I called Cinemark theaters today.. for senior citizens, it's $25 dollars per ticket..otherwise $27 dollars per adult ticket.. This will be a huge production... the video that I posted above is only 2 hours, 25 minutes long..BUT this NEW production is THREE HOURS and FORTY MINUTES in length. (with a 25 minute intermission, with interviews with the principal actors and producers) This production promises to be SPECTACULAR on every level. Guess where my daughter and I will be on Bebruary 1st, 2020? (She's never seen or heard "Porgy" before.. tried so many times to get her to listen, but she wouldn't do it.. till now. ) Hope to see all ya'll there! I'm almost shaking with excitement to see this great new production of "PORGY and BESS" .. oooooh yeah.. :>)

The Met is not as expensive as that, unless you are sitting in the Orchestra section. My wife and I will be going to the final performance of the extended run on February 15th. Balcony seats (still great) run about $150-$200 each though. Looks to be a great performance!

It might sounds exaggerated, but I consider Porgy and Bess as the greatest pieces of music ever. Of course Gerhswin has been inspired a lot by Verdi, Wagner, Bizet and probably Puccini but he eventually composed an outstanding opera like absolutely no other (and I am talking about the whole original piece, which lasts at least 195 minutes). George Gershwin is a quite underrated composer for what he brought to music history, especially with his orchestral works and he was surely one of the finest composers ever.

It is great that this is here. This production is so much better than the Met production that was telecast. The directing and acting are so much better in this production, and it is a bit less heavily cut. Btw, I would not say this was a recreation of the Houston Grand Opera production. This had a different director and a different choreographer. It has the same set designer as the 1983 remount that played at Radio City but he was not the set designer of the 1976 Houston production that toured so widely and had a successful Broadway run. This does have the same conductor and costume designer of both the 1976 and 1983 productions.

If a great historical, experimental, democratic, anthropological, multiracial, philosophical and political task, has born on the highest flames of the illustration, and it is the creation of the greatest nation ever; a great musical ode must celebrate it. Likewise the music of Messiah of George F. Handel; Porgy & Bess of George & Ira Gershwin, was so iconic a creation of the human race unity and grandeur. ¡It is an important and beautiful ode!!

While this is a fine production, it's a shame that, unlike in his recording with the Houston Opera, DeMain makes cuts here (about 30 minutes are missing) - the mangling of the Buzzard Song is very strange, although at least it's not entirely absent as from the 1993 filmed version with Rattle conducting. Hopefully Wayne Shirley's new critical edition (for which I am honored to be one of the editorial assistants) will prompt more intact performances of the opera. Let's hear it for George's full orchestration, featuring four clarinetists (three doubling on saxophones!) :-D

Update: they cut the English horn solo at the beginning of what they are calling Act II!!?!? It is supposed to follow the chiming stacked fourths. What a monstrous omission!!

I saw the Houston Grand Opera's production of Porgy 3 times, over 40 years ago..it was one of the finest Porgys ever produced. Even this New York City Opera production is far better than the horrible San Francisco Opera's Porgy that has been released on blu ray...what a travesty..However, this 2002 production is very much like the Houston Opera's Porgy..at least we have a video of this production, where none exists of the Houston Grand Opera's production of Porgy.

I shudder to see the SF version. My health probably could not withstand it. The 1993 Rattle filmed version is good, aside from the missing Buzzard Song and missing opening of the final scene (both of which are present here in mangled form). This Lincoln Center production has a far more powerful finale than the 1993 film, however, with the residents of Catfish Row all saying goodbye to him and with Maria handing him the gift for Bess (now THAT is a stroke of genius, and makes the already heart-rending ending even more so). And THEY ACTUALLY HAVE A GOAT! (Fun fact: the original typescript libretto says the goat is supposed to be "very dirty and patriarchal.") There is going to be a test performance of the full ,185-minute score on February 17, 2018 in Ann Arbor, Michigan - hope some people here are able to attend!!

Oh, I think that the San Francisco Opera used the same truncated arrangement that the Dallas Opera did a few years ago...the Dallas Opera called in a guest conductor who thought he knew better than Gershwin..he re-wrote the music for the entire opera..removing instruments...editing the music itself..as a result; the entire thing sounded so WEAK in the cavernous Music Hall here in Dallas...it was horrible...I can't imagine that I was the only one who detested this production. The San Francisco Opera also had a Bess who was literally falling out of her clothes; very unseemly for a large lady..her VOICE had no "chemistry" with their Porgy.. the whole thing made me very uneasy.. their Porgy ( as in the Dallas production) simply walked around with a crutch...sigh... and due to Political Correctness... the dialogue was changed quite a bit, deviating from what was originally written in the original production back in 1935. The entire San Francisco production is a mess. I loved the Houston Grand Opera's Production.. it was meticulous in every way; this production reflected what Gershwin would have wanted to see on stage. Gershwin's PORGY and BESS is marvelous.. there is no reason to mess with it in the way that these productions have...

He had to make the cuts for that particular performance because we were live from Lincoln Center there were certain time constraints and in addition there is a whole section with the host of the evening Beverly Sills that is not shown here but was televised that took away time.

I am right noiw reading a biography book on George Gershwin and I have read about him composing his 2 piano masterpieces, Rhapsody in Blue and the Concerto in F but not yet about him composing "Porgy and Bess".

I very much enjoyed the San Francisco version having recently seen the latest national tour which was THE WORST rendition of the 5 professional productions I have seen. I did see the 1976 Houston Grand Opera production. There will NEVER be another one like that.

Imagine.... a production that actually has Porgy's "goat cart". but, yeah..., why do they always mess with the great Buzzard song, and a few other cuts often made? Who'd mind if it ran 10 minutes longer?
@andrewkohler97306 жыл бұрын
Hence the great line: "Bring my goat!" But alas, there are more than just a few cuts, fellow Andrew. A complete performance would be a full half hour longer, as we at the Gershwin Initiative at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) recently (17 Feb. 2018) got to experience with the test performance of Wayne Shirley's new edition (which restores four measures at the beginning of the second scene and two lines that Porgy and Bess sing/speak to each other over the orchestra before "Bess, You Is My Woman Now," among other things). There were two intermissions, so the whole evening was four hours. People are willing to do that for Wagner, of course, and the running time of the actual score is not longer than the record-breaking-at-the-box-office Titanic. The audience reacted with enormous enthusiasm to the complete score, and I got the sense that everyone remained captivated throughout. In addition to the mangling of the Buzzard Song, this production is missing the wonderful trio for Serena, Annie, and Woman (alas, no name for her), where they stonewall the odious detective (Act III, Scene 2). It's also missing the scene with Mr. Archdale, which further depicts the relationship between the residents of Catfish Row and the white community (in this case a friendly figure, but the power dynamic is still disconcerting).

True. But just think of the outrage if they cut a game of a bunch of musclebound guys playing with a pigskin at all short! But for all that, even with the cuts, the great Gershwin remains ever great and ever indestructible!!!

It truly speaks to the time when many Blacks had no education. Some known educated person could come and easily make a fool out of an impoverished community by selling them things such as so called medicine or a divorce. The lawyer was caught in his lie... He tried to save face.

Puccini never wrote summit like this. It's Jazz opera. It might sound a bit like other classical music, but the entire piece is unique in its kind and therefore a masterpiece created by Gershwin and a few others. 😉

I agree with you on this comment. I was listening and thinking the same thing from the Opera opened. While the singers did an outstanding job with their performances, their timbre is quite dark and dramatic. To me, this fabulous opera needs a combination of subtle, warm, and dark tones. Too much of any compromises the overall tonal quality.
