3:00 I remembered who did "Litttle Green Bag" when I first heard "Una Paloma Blanca", but I suspect that a lot of people in the USA remembered both songs, but not who did them, the same way they had forgotten who did "It's a Heartache" by the time "Total Eclipse of the Heart" came out. Today, I'll bet more people remember "Little Green Bag" from Reservoir Dogs than from hearing it on the radio in 1970. Both Paloma Blanca an Green bag were unlike anything else on the radio at the time and the world would be a duller place without records like that.

I would venture to add that as a supplemental component to Mr. Baker's rationale for the tracks uniqueness and destiny as a hit (attributing such to it having been contrived and produced initially to be able to stand alone instrumentally) was the superior engineering approaches used in recording of the rhythm bed. Close mic placement and the use of expansion and limiting applied to capture the amazing attack and rich tonality of the toms, enhanced further by incredible warmth and fullness present in the bass and organ (that was possible due to tube electronics and analog tape generated harmonics) provided surreal contrasts once higher frequencies were blended in from guitar, and vocal sibilance, and all congealed and sprang to life when genuine studio delay, reverberation treatments were applied during mixing. As I've pointed out to interns and students over the years, there are only a handful of pop tracks from that era that reveal so explicitly such distinctive nuances. The Hollies' " Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress", is another one. Even digitizing can't kill that beautiful perfection.

Wow, a record company that doesn't hear something special in this song is in the wrong business.
