His educated Irish accent is beautiful. Did Wilde also talk like this? Or was his accent more like 'cut glass' english?

Interesting question.

This is just a clearly enunciated Irish accent, and many people who did not have an education spoke in this way in the past with a little effort. My grandmother spoke like this. It is likely that Wilde had a similar accent.

He didn't always speak like that. He's actually mocking the Irish here. Listen to some of the other videos of him. Anglo Irish wasn't Irish

I question the year of this film - Shaw mentions that the American President became famous for feeding the starving millions of war-devastated Europe. That is a reference to Herbert Hoover, who left office in March, 1933.

@@3000_Year_Old_Man I wonder. He mentions in his speech that the United States was established "141 years ago", obviously referring to the signing of the US Constitution, which happened in 1789. That would put his speech in 1930.

@@gvc76 No, the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence was "141 years before" the 1917 Russian Revolution. 10:07

@gvc76 4 жыл бұрын
@@oskartheme5233 It may be. But if that's what he really meant, then that was a poor choice of words; saying "141 years ago" makes one think that he is referring to his present. Unless "ago" had a slightly different meaning back then.

A great critic, social commentator and playwright in younger days; as B. H. Haggin said, he degenerated into a "unpleasantly perverse and silly world figure." The young Shaw fought for improvement in the lives in the underprivileged. I don't know if it was senility or disillusionment from the mass killing of WW1, but he certainly changed. I prefer to remember the young genius and not the doddering fool.

As for 'fighting for improvement in the lives of the underprivileged', his support for the USSR as seen in the video does not contradict that, on the contrary. Among those who, like Shaw, believed that the way to 'improve the lives of the underprivileged' was socialism, many let their wishful thinking get the better of them and imagined that Soviet Russia was what they had hoped for. When people had observed the evils of capitalism up close for most of their lives, it's hard to blame them too much for hoping in 1917 that a better world was finally around the corner. That said, Shaw does appear to have had - maybe increasingly - a weird narcissistic soft spot for dictatorial methods as such, when exercised by self-identified 'great men' over their 'inferiors', and that caused him to express sympathy even for Hitler and Mussolini at times.

Pity Shaw wasn't around to see the USSR collapse like a house of cards. He has all the fervour you'd expect of an economically illiterate extremist. Sad, because as a playwright he was excellent.
