Here's to the only living actor who actually attended the funeral of Hattie McDaniel. Class, integrity, and a fire in the belly that would never be quelched.

Well ... James Cagney passed away on Easter Sunday, 1986, Jose. You're right, though, about her funeral. Unrivalled class. - Cheers. - Stay well and safe! VCH & Midlantic Theatre Co., Newark, NJ, USA

@@virghammer1by “living,” Jose meant the only actor alive at the time of Hattie’s funeral. And when you think of the huge number of stars who were around in those days, that says a lot about Mr. Cagney.

Cagney as the captain in " Mr. Roberts " was grand! Orson Welles, a fan of Cagney, said, "...maybe the greatest actor who ever appeared in front of a camera. " I'd agree.

James Cagney is hands down, one of my favorite actors of all time. When I found out he was actually a song-and-dance man, as demonstrated by Yankee Doodle Dandy and several other movies/shows, it blew me away! The man had gravitas. He SOLD you on the idea that he was either plain rotten to the core, or a genuine hero. I can't remember the movie, but he spoke Yiddish, which had me laughing as I grew up around some Jewish folks. He was of a special breed.

Me .. growing up during the 60's in NYC .... I got to see Cagney movies they showed on Channel 9 Program known as "The Million Dollar Movie" .. they showed the classics - this all pre-Turner Classic channel... oh yeah, the time when the only channels on TV were - 2(CBS) .. 4(NBC)..5 (I think at that time Fox) ..7(ABC) ... 9(WOR-TV) .. 11(WPIX) .. 13(PBS) ...41&47 Spanish channels .. that was it for channels unlike today lol ....

I’m shocked that the words recited by Scott at the beginning - “wholly human,” etc. - were written for a man like Robert E. Lee. Massive kudos to Scott for finally speaking those words to a man who actually deserved them.

I simply do not have the words to convey how much I love, respect and admire this giant artist! He's a perfect example why I don't care for most actors today. Who could possibly top him? U & me both, sister. My nickname was “Cagney” growing up, everyone knew how I adored him = my idol. Never could find a man like him. I always feared that when he died I’d cry my heart out forever -but when he passed in ‘86 my son had just been born, which saved my heart from breaking into a million pieces. I recall ppl gathered outside a NYC church when his coffin was brought down its steps, how they applauded. Wish I could’ve made it there that day to say goodbye. Am also a loner & never did, or will, find my James Cagney. But if I’m very lucky, I might see him past the pearly gates one day down the road...

Both were adopted. This was before commercial DNA testing might have helped them understand their origins, contact biological relations and put their adopted lives into perspective. His adopted son James Jr. died prematurely from a heart attack in his forties two years before Cagney's death, so had he lived longer they might have reconciled. His daughter Casey married an employee on her father's New York estate but they divorced in 1981, so that may have complicated their relationship. She raised two daughters, born in the 1960s, that grew up in California so they probably did not have much contact with James Cagney, Sr. since they were 3,000 miles apart. Casey died from cancer in her sixties, twenty-two years after her adopted brother.

I agree. Honoring Robert E. Lee? He and the others from the South and who fought for the Confederacy were guilty of treason against the United States. They violated the very Constitution that so many Southerners claim to respect, honor and would die for. What country in the history of our planet honors treasonous members of the enemy's army by erecting and maintaining statues and monuments to the very people responsible for the deaths of 600,000 citizens? (in Robert E. Lee's case he and his fellow treasonous monsters wete responsible for the deaths of 600,000 Americans). Hey, let's erect statues and monuments him and his Confederate traitors.
