I think Charles and William were afraid that Catherine would leave. To me it's obvious what they are doing. Catherine needs a babysitter. Catherine could have purchased their store and they could have continued to work there. Catherine was going to leave. Very close. Of course the monarchy couldn't let her leave. She's the reason the monarchy is still standing. She is very well liked because she is relatable and genuine and is truly caring and compassionate. Charles and William decided to throw money at it and hired Carol to babysit. Carol and Michael will make their best effort to keep her there and support her. William will know they will protect her and talk to her if something additional happens. This makes me angry when they think she is a problem and I'm sure they impressed upon her that she will continue to portray the future Queen. William has screwed up big time but in order to keep her there he has shown like she was only playing the part as his wife. If William can't make her stay that shows me that he wouldn't mind if she left. It would be detrimental to the fascade of her being the wife of the future king. I guess now it's all about appearances. William married his safe option. Little did he know she would be an asset to the monarchy and one of most liked. He is now a shadow behind her.
