We knew Scott when he came out West with Bill Evans he became a Dear Friend before his unexpectedly death. So young & so talented. Years later, my husband played drums with Bill Evans.

Love Scott Lafaro!! He was such an untraditional aggressive bass player. He definitely played his own way and not what other bass players were doing at that time.

I've heard Bill talk in several settings. Never have I heard such enthusiasm form him for anything or anyone as he had for Scott. As Bill said about Scottie, "he lived at such a high pitch. Whenever I was down I'd be lifted in his presence." Thanks so much for posting this. It does wonders for me as an artist to hear Bill so enthusiastic about his work with a friend and all-time great bassist.

The first thing I ever heard from this trio was "My Foolish Heart" from the "Waltz for Debby" album. Within 4 bars I just froze and realized that this was the most sensitive and moving interaction between musicians maybe ever. By the end of the tune I was a changed person. I was crushed when I found out how little was recorded by this group but like every Bill Evans fan I listened to everything he did after that anyway. Thanks to transformative technology and headphones I can finally hear all the incredible work from Scott that I couldn't decipher before. His death is truly one of the great jazz tragedies.

Scott cannot be duplicated. His playing on The Arrival Of Victor Feldman stopped me dead when I first heard it. Aggressive and nuanced. Beyond description, really.

Been listening to a ton of Bill Evans with the anniversary of his death last week. Scott Lafaro's playing astounds me. The Village Vanguard sides are such great recordings that I notice Scott's tone stand out. He was far beyond his years in maturity. His sensitivity and use of silence, especially on My Foolish Heart were such gifts. Thanks for posting.

Wonderful to hear one genius paying tribute to a brother genius in such a heartfelt way and with such clarity of expression. What great music these two made together. (Paul Motian also deserves much credit for his part in that superb trio, of course). Thank you for posting this.

It is my own understanding through listening Bill's music whether its correct or not. After Lafaro's Death, Bill never had a clarity moment and profound sideman like he had with Scott again throughout his remaining career. Its so sad. Even with Young Marc Johnson who at the time, being praised by bill so much, cant even compare to Scott. i remembered first time listening to track 'witchcraft' from 'portrait of jazz'. The way scott played and interplayed with Bill was mindblowing

I would say that I totally disagree. I think the communication he got with Gómez is far beyond, which makes sense as they worked together for 11 years. Now, it is always said that his work with the first trio is the best mostly because it's the moment he presented his concept and critics only like the boom thing. But his work in the 70s is far more superior and most of it was with Gómez. I think that a huge proof of this I'm saying is their duo album "Intuition". THAT is something that I haven't heard in any other recording and it's the ultimate point of collaboration I've heard in Evans music

@@santibogacz Hmmm, I thought about this for a while, but not for me. I think Bill is probably my all time favourite, but the stuff with Scott shines as a star in all his catalogue, at least for me.. Theres tremendous material and amazing amazing music in the Eddie Gomez period, but I agree with Bills analysis that something extra special was happening with the trio with Scott. I'm a bassist, and I've always loved Scott and Eddie (and MJ and so on) but I've recently been diving into all the albums that Scott did in his short life and getting a handle on the progression he made to the last trio recordings, and I've got to say not much in jazz, for me, comes close in terms of action/reaction. The enormous connection Bill had with Eddie is wonderful, but not quite on that same level, or even the same thing, as the true, once in a lifetime (perhaps for them, rather than me) , spark they had in that early trio. From my studies Bill seemed to agree with this to his grave. But hey, it's ALL subjective. BTW I love your music with Salim Javaid!

Thanks very much! I actually have a duo with a double bass player. You can hear of it here: restuccia-bogacz.bandcamp.com/ I think you’ll like it. Start with track VIII and then the whole thing ;)

@@santibogacz I understand what you're saying and Gomez is a monster. But La Faro had something deeper and much more lyrical in his playing that I've never heard from another bass player in my 56 years of listening, playing and composing music.

Excellent interview, but I’m not surprised since Evans was that rare breed of jazz or rock musician who was so articulate and intelligent. The one thing that struck me as slightly humorous was how his speaking voice during this interview reminds me a little of a young Jack Nicholson.

I think Lennie Tristano sat out of a session at the Half Note with Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Jimmy Garrison and Paul Motian. Bill reluctantly sat in. The albums has been resold as Lee Konitz as leader. Bill struggled to play behind Lee. He sat out. I think that was recorded in 1959.

One of the greatest jazz duos of all-time and when you add Paul Motian the best jazz trio of all-time in my opinion. If you're interested in a fictional renereing of what went on between them try this...www.kickstarter.com/projects/449226382/songs-of-icarus-hemingway-meets-monk-the-heartbrea
