I didn't have black parents, nor am I black, but growing up in Canada in the 70's, I was the ONLY white kid in my family, let alone neighbourhood/town, who would sit for hours waiting for Soul Train to come on the television!! While everyone was listening to Led Zeppelin, Blood Sweat & Tears, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and our Canadian guru, Neil Young, I was mesmerized by Soul train - the dancing, the music and talent. I tried so damn hard to imitate the dancers - while my parents and sisters' looked at me like 'what is she doing'? When George Clinton came out with Atomic Dog, I was blown away and thought it the funkiest tune ever. To this day, every time I hear that song, every bone in my body is jiving to that tune.

I would've been about 4 or 5 when this came out. It wasn't played on commercial radio over here in England, so it's not a childhood memory (but so much crap pop is, lol!) Luckily, GC was getting sampled *extensively* when I was a young 90's hip hop head and it made me find out the original tracks - like this one! Ice Cube and Dr Dre (and a load of others, of course) jacked *so many* of his riddims! This must've blown the spot at clubs when it first came out! Luckily, I saw him around '96 in England at a festival (The Essential Weekender). He (and his line up at that time) smashed it. He was crazy as ever on stage! A true pioneer and original. And a genius. That term gets thrown around too lightly, but he was. So influential!

This song was actually made in mistake. George thought they were recording with out him. So he jumped in the booth and the sound engineer had started rewinding the track and George couldn’t tell what key it was in, so he just started to play it off like he knew what was happening and started talking and singing.

Heavy crack/cocaine use era George Clinton led to some of the most innovative music in American history. Shit like this seriously makes me so proud to be an American. We have the best culture. George is alive and kicking and he was the oldest member of the original P-Funk guys. It blows my mind. Dude was born in the 1941 and is still touring being awesome and making music with everyone who will work with him. A true American hero. He invented an entire movement that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Parliament/funkadelic was the greatest American band of all time with the greatest collection of instrumentalists. Just a force of nature

Well put comment @joshb8976. I remember reading a Rolling Stone article about George Clinton back in the 2010s. *One of the things that he said in that article that has stuck with me was that he was around so many people in his lifetime who did no drugs, who did way less drugs, or just lived much healthier than than he did and they're dead.* There are just some people whose bodies, immune systems, and etc. that have a higher tolerance for drugs than others. Some people's bodies aren't made to take a lot of drugs and then 𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒍 be living into their 80s like Clinton (he's 82 now).

In 1982, I was the token white guy at a radio station called WDAO. Unofficially, it meant "White Days Are Over". But no one but our dj "Dizzy" took that seriously. We were all about the breakout of R&B in the mainstream of music, most noticeably, the introduction of disco in middle America. The station thought it'd be awesome if I, a very thin white guy with a long pony tail, would announce the most awesome group of the genre at the concert at Hara Arena. So, after the Sun City Devils performed their warm up, I walked onstage in bib overalls and a thermal long sleeved t-shirt wearing my old work boots to announce George Clinton. You could have heard a cricket fart in the back of the arena. It took only six seconds for my intro to make the 4,000 fans in the arena to realize I wasn't just some uptight black guy they heard every night from 10 to 6. They realized that some skinny Caucasian guy really knew what R&B really meant at the time and that music of the time went across cultures. George and his crew treated me like everyone else, and I learned that we had a lot more in common than skin color. We shared a love of music. The next 3 days were a blur, George had included me in his entourage. As a young man with a chip on my shoulder, I was humbled by the experience. At my age, I often laugh at the images in my scrapbook. But I can still feel the connection that one thin, white rock and roller shared with an R&B legend.

+oldsarge101 I liked your long story and found it interesting. I am a true music lover and thought I'd share that in my life, R&B always had a place. I grew up listening to AFRTS radio, went to a DoD school from 8th grade up and came from two parents who loved music and gave me my love for it. I think meeting George Clinton would have be wonderful but not the path I have walked. My music taste varies from all types, my music collection is huge. I love to pull up videos for some of the songs I that I enjoy, depending on my mood. If you are open to something different with an interesting references to so many icons, I would suggest Rage Against the Machine's "Renegades of Funk." If you want some of what I loved as a high school student, I love Sly and the Family Stone's "Stand" or "If You Want Me to Stay" or Joan Jett's cover of their "Everyday People" as well as their own. I also love Cream's cover of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads." I also love many others, my taste varies to all types as I previously said.

Coming from a white boy. The lady and I used to rock to this all the time at the club when we went out to have a good time. One of my favorite songs to dance to ever. Set the tone for the night. Didn't have to chase that cat far. Just a white boy that likes to rock 🪨.

Saw George Clinton, Funkadelic/Parliament in concert in Knoxville, TN about 5 yrs ago. Brought back many memories from high school. My white friends thought I was crazy when I played this, my black friends already knew I was crazy. George said he was 72 yrs old and hasn't been high for 2 yrs. Gotta clean up eventually!

Couple things. I was born in 1987. I learned of who George Clinton was through a deep love of Space Ghost Coast to Coast, when it was on Television. I wouldn't have never known of this amazing music without the fine people behind William Street and Adult Swim respectively. True legend with great music and also a hell of a *interview* with space ghost if you've never seen it. It's worth a watch.

This was my growing up music, we were mesmerized by George Clinton and the music of the Fundadelic. The 70s and 80s was the best in music r&b, soul, rock, it down matter. People made music they loved, not music that just made money. Ojays, Stylistics, I could go on; these artists told stories, they didn't ramble up about Gucc?$%$$$.

Pulled from George Clinton’s 1982 album Computer Games, ‘Atomic Dog’ did indeed reach no.1 on the U.S. R&B chart, but failed to even crack the top 100 on the pop charts. It was the product of studio trickery and a typically loopy flow from Clinton himself, who told NPR in 2006 that he “just had the word ‘dog,’” and “had to ad lib a lot of it.” This ad lib led to the immortal “Bow wow wow yippy yo yippy yay,” which was described in court in 2009 as being “in terms of iconography, perhaps the functional equivalent of ‘E.T. phone home.” It’s the most sampled cut in the entire P-Funk catalogue, and even though the song itself didn’t go gold, Capitol later told Clinton that ‘Atomic Dog’ “has since helped a lot of artists go platinum.” We’re thinking Snoop might owe him a few sips of Gin ‘n Juice. Heard in: Herbie Hancock, ‘Vibe Alive’ (1988) Ice Cube, ‘My Summer Vacation’ (1991) Snoop Dogg, ‘Who Am I? (What’s My Name)?’ (1993) 2Pac, ‘Holler If Ya Hear Me’ (1993) New Kids on the Block, ‘Dirty Dawg’ (1993) [www.factmag.com/2014/02/04/sample-the-funk-10-legendary-samples-and-the-stories-behind-them/11/]
