This song and interpretation is a masterpiece. Greece might have economical problems, but these will pass. However, the greek spirituality transcends the mundane aspects of life. The "beauty" was born in Ancient Greece. And it seems that she doesn't want to leave that place...

To NYCBG: I assure you that there are many other countries who have big problems, even though, from outside, they look good. It's like an old painting: from distance it looks beautiful. but if you get closer, you can see a lot of cracks and scratches. I live in Canada. where is a deep economical recession now, and it's very hard to get a job (any job... ). In contrast to Greece, if something happens with the supply of fuel for the heating of the houses (a terrorist attack on a major fuel supply pipe, or any other fuel supply disruptions) could cause people to freeze to death in their homes in the winter, because in the winter is very cold here. You don't have this problem in Greece: the weather is warm even in winter, and you have a lot of fruits and vegetables. There are very few fruits and vegetables growing here, in Canada, because of the cold. Most of the fruits and vegetables are imported from other, warmer, countries.

To my opinion, Dalaras is one of the most important composers, singers, musicians and ambassadors of culture in Europe lately. He sang hundreds of beautiful songs, revived the "rembetiko" style and showed the richness and of Mediterranean cultures. I don't know if he's still singing. Would go to a concert. This particular song was created by a Thessaloniki composer - Kougiomtzis and is extremely beautiful and down-to-earth longing because of a departure from a beloved one. By the way, "xanthe vasilike mou" doesn't mean "golden basilikum", but "golden princess" :)

Based on the true story, this song was written in Corfu, Greece. It has been written by unknown Serbian soldier who was departing from Corfu to Macedonian front, to take part in one of the decisive battles in WWI. The song was dedicated to a Greek girl from Corfu named Harula Hondrojani. She made the song out of his love letter. The song was a bit altered and published by Eftihia Papayanopoulou, while the music was written by Greek composer Stavros Kouyoumtzi and famous Greek singer Yorgos Dalaras made one of the best performances of the song. Harula Hondrojani was a sister of Yanni Yannouli who gave his sole field that he had in personal possession, for Serbian soldiers to be buried in. This field was never again cultivated and afterwards the monument was erected, dedicated to fallen soldiers of Drina Division of Serbian Army, by survived veterans. This field is close to the village of Saint Matthew. This song became a symbol of eternal friendship and brotherhood between Greek and Serbian people. Also it is used as an official anthem of Greek-Serbian friendship society. Original comment written in Serbian by mr Cele Savic.

Нет, лучше все спела этот романс, Ульяна Ковалик!!! Это настолько трогательно и душевно!!! Уносишься и бальзам на душу! Жаль что только один куплет! Нельзя ли записать в её исполнении весь романс?
