Got My Mind Set On You was on George Harrison's 1987 comeback album CLOUD NINE and George passed away on November 29, 2001. This is a cover song that was originally written by Rudy Clark and recorded by James Ray in 1962. George said that he bought a copy of the single in 1963 when visiting his sister in Illinois. When he was putting together the album he said that he remembered the song and decided to cover it. Jeff Lynne of ELO produced this album and you can hear his influence.

I love how George Harrison had the first and the last solo Beatle #1s on the Billboard Hot 100. Also, this song was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 the weekend my parents got married. ^_^

Its a cover a james ray song... one of Georges fave artists from the early days. He blew paul and john away with learning the whole lp in 1962.

Lol I remember Live Aid, and it does indeed look like BG. I don’t know if it actually is, but you’re right, it does look like him.

I just love George. I always think of him as such a gentle soul and a deep thinker. His talent was overshadowed by Paul and John. I love While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Here Comes the Sun. I think he did a song All Those Years Ago. He was lost too young. His son looks just like him! ❤

Definitely looks like Bob Geldoff during the flip. When Paul McCartney did Let It Be at Live Aid, Bob Geldoff came out to sing and I was sure it was George Harrison until they showed his face.

It must be wonderful to have someone set their mind on you, and is aware of what that means, and what it's gonna take..refreshing.

Haha, the body double could be Geldoff or Leo Sayer! I wonder if George didn't decide to record this song because it reminded him of his lawsuit a few years earlier, surrounding My Sweet Lord. Soon after that affair he decided to simply buy the company that owned the original copyright for the melody.

Go to early George, just after the Beatles breakup, and listen to Awaiting On You All.

Early George Harrison “Within you without you” , “Old brown shoe” “She said she said”. “Blue jay way” “Here comes the sun” “Something” “Savoy truffle” “I me mine” /// Later. Concert for Bangladesh, beware of darkness, what is life?, when we were fab, so many more but the song George wrote about Jimi Hendrix’s gift to him , a wah wah pedal is a wall of sound I particularly like, same as Bangladesh.

Always happy to meet a fellow Beatles fan! Sweet! I agree, it's so annoying that Beatles song get blocked here, it sucks so much. I would have loved to see you reaction to it. How do you feel about Paul's solo work? I don't think there are blocking issues. Maybe Say Say Say by Paul feat. Michael Jackson. Cheers!

@DramaSyd - Have you given the original a listen yet, sung by James Ray??? If not, you NEED to hear it!! It will give you a different perspective on the song. I love Harrison, but I think the original flavor of the song was lost in the cover version. Just my two cents.

I don't know how to say this except that this song absolutely sucks. I have no problem with simple songs. Harrison usually shines here. Think "My Sweet Lord" or "Here Comes the Sun." Usually if it's musically simple the lyrics will try harder. Or vice versa. I can't be alone on this. The only thing I'll give any credit for is production which you touched on. Other than that, it's a soggy bowl of oat flakes. I literally run for the power off button any time I hear this song. I've left the room. I've walked out of bars for 4-5 minutes. I don't like to associate George Harrison with this thing. I think I hate it so much because it's so disappointing coming from him. Everyone including me loves George Harrison so it's hard to be critical. F that. I'll say it. It's the mayonnaise on top of white bread. It's bad. Think about it. If ANY other person than legendary solo artist, ex-Beatle, George Harrison delivered a song like this to the studio, a record company it would be tossed. It's lazy. A cash grab in the video age. Like dozens of other 80s songs. (Cough... cough...Jagger, Bowie, Dancin' in the Streets) It defines the milquetoast in the 80s where grunge had to come in and destroy.

It was a cover and it had been recorded in 1963 by James Ray and was a hit so it was presented to a record company by a non Beatle and accepted! So its not an 80s song at all and you don't explain what is wrong with it in your estimation. Just describe it as soggy whatever that means.
