If George Harrison's contribution to music wasn't enough, the world of comedy also owes him respect for bankrolling Monty Python's Life of Brian. When Harrison told Eric Idle he'd put up the money for the film's production after reading the script, Eric asked him why. His response, "I want to see the movie."

Here Comes the Sun, was described by George Martin, who is arguably one of the most qualified people to know about such things as, the greatest pop song of all time. Personally it's my favorite Harrison song from his time in the Beatles. But I think his best work was with the Wilburys. Perhaps Jeff Lynne's production favoured the songs, perhaps he saw Harrison as being equal to everyone else rather than his lower status in the Beatles, perhaps he was just more comfortable with himself by then, I don't know but as much as I love Beatles music, George didn't get a fair share of the record space, whereas in the Wilburys he was very much an equal amongst greats.

I remember hearing a story (I'm not sure how true it us though) that George had hired a new groundskeeper shortly before he was attacked and stabbed. He was on the grounds for the attack and witnessed his new boss being carted away on a stretcher. According to the story, George looked in his direction and feebly quipped, "So how do you like the job so far?" Like I said, I'm not sure if the story is true or not, but if it is it's a hell of a guy who can maintain his sense of humour in such circumstances.

My favourite of George's songs is Crackerbox Palace. The opening bars give me a strong feeling of deja vu, or something like it, and I'll never get tired of the song. I've loved George since I was 11yo and wanted him to be my dad instead of the one I had who left us when we were small. I'd sit and gaze at the cover of the Let It Be album. It must have been fate that all my other interests led back to George in some way, such as my love of Monty Python and the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. When George died I queued for four hours at St. George's Hall in Liverpool to sign the memorial book. As you went up the steps there was a Hare Krishna group playing Indian music. Far from being a sad occasion, it was life affirming. I'll always love George and his oddly evocative tunes.

I think George Harrison is a big part of why the Beatles made it as far as they did as a band after the band manager, Brian Epstein, died. George would stay behind in the studio, working on the albums and making sure that they could be completed, while John Lennon would do things, like go off and have a lost weekend with Harry Nilsson. I think the Beatles were better when they broke up and had solo careers. Each one of their talents was able shine without having to fight about who's songs go on the albums and where. For those that liked this video, I would recommend the Martin Scorsese directed documentary; Living in a Material World and of course the new six part documentary series Get Back. 😌
@JonahNelson72 жыл бұрын
George is a factor by definition of why they kept up their output after Brian died, but anyone who's seen their dynamic can see Paul became the engine full stop. Every management, directional, and artistic choice was his after 1967. In Get Back you even see he didn't want to be, but he had to be. Ringo and George were just playing what they were told, and John really backed off. So yeah of course George was a part of why it happened, because he was a wheel on their train. Paul was the engine Their output as solo artists was definitely not better, both by the numbers and by critical reception

The hate of long hair thing in America always made me laugh. For almost all of human history long hair on men was a way of showing the community you are hygienic disciplined and someone of value to society assuming you took time to wash an maintain it. Taking care of long hair means taking time to clean and brush it. It also means dealing with the extra heat it creates an putting it up when working. The frist thing I'd do in a bad situation like war or EMP event is cut a lot of my hair off yeah that is kinda lazy of me but survival in such situations can be decided by second's wasted moving hair out of eye's or trying to see through it. I must say though after it gets long enough it acts as some kind of antenna lol I know that sounds nuts but it's something often talked about in history by those who had long hair at some point.

Thanks for this video. The documentary’Living in the Material World’ by Martin Scorsese is a fantastic insight into George. The Skiffle revival was driven largely by Lonnie Donegan, who attended my secondary school, Saint Ambrose College in Hale Barns, Cheshire, UK.

You can hear a lot of George's influence in the mid to late 70s ELO .Mr blue sky particularly. No wonder he collaborated with Jeff Lynne.

No mention of his excellent album Cloud Nine? It really was a big come back moment for George.

As a kid in the 80's and 90's I loved the music video "I got my mind set on you" - I wanted to make music videos or do animation and this video always made me laugh so hard, which is the heart of entertainment...the prairie dog with the pipe... awesome.

that was one of my favorites as a kid! music videos hadn't even been around that long...

I was so enchanted by that video and watched it over and over. Had no idea he was a Beatle. Just a cool dude jamming in a chair with a house coming alive around him.

Mr. Harrison's parents made a fantastic investment vis-a-vis buying him that inaugural guitar.

I'm a big fan of George's solo work after the Beatles. Some really good stuff, All things, Material world, 33 and a third. A lot of forgotten hidden gems (well maybe not all things must pass).

One of those songs 'Life Itself' is one of the most gorgeous pieces of music I've ever heard, but basically unknown. In fact there's a few of those. George was not big on self-promotion.

You can find quality stuff on every George album. Gone Troppo is my least favorite but even that one has some standout tracks.

In any other band, at any other time, George Harrison would have been the lead, the star, the main man, but this wasn't any other band and it wasn't any other time. Without Bill Haley & the Comets, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly & The Beatles, the world would be a much different place. To have walked the earth and left a mark that his and future generations can easily recognise, is probably the greatest achievement any person can have. Thank you Mr. Harrison for your contribution to popular culture. You were, are, and will always remain, a legend and an inspiration. Maybe it was the fates making some sort of recompense that George Harrison had the most successful solo career of the Beatles.

If there are still any Beatles fans out there who doubt George's contributions. Remind them that Here Comes The Sun is the Beatle's most popular song on Spotify.
@haywoodjblome47682 жыл бұрын
That hardly means anything when you look at the most streamed songs on Spotify. The reason Here Comes The Sun has so many streams is because it's on various official Spotify play lists. That being said it is a great song

Honestly while Lennon McCartney’s musical output was incredibly industrious. But George’s compositions were a lot more interesting and complex. That’s why his songs are considered Among the best in the Beatles library.

George Harrison implemented a series of musical changes into the Beatles evolution style, modern rock owes him a lot! He also developed into a discreet but profound love for Mexican music and culture through his wife Olivia and became a fan of his namesake (in Spanish) Jorge Negrete, a late mariachi singer and actor.
