I grew up in the 70s and I mostly listen to classic rock but there are a few country singers I like. Waylon Jennings is my favorite but I really like George Jones too. This song is one of my favorite country songs

Very rare are those who get this as quickly as you did. That's the beauty of this song. Read somewhere that this song stayed at #1 for 18 weeks and in the top 100 for 2 years.

When i was a child and first heard this song I understood he died which is why he stopped loving her. When i asked my mom about the song and remember her telling me it was a prison song. I thought she meant he was actually in prison. Only now as an adult do I realize the "prison" was his love for her. On one hand it's hard to find love like that. When you do it should be treasured and treated with equal love. On the other hand it's also sad that his love for her was a "prison" that he could never escape from. Thank you for your reaction

HARMONICA. Can you explain "but I didn't see no tears" and "first time I'd seen him smile in years"? Good follow of the clues! A 3-minute slow-motion avalanche of heavy human emotions!

I ❤️ that you get it. This song fully describes my Dad. My Mom left my Dad, then passed in 2020. He passed in August 2022 and wanted this song played at his funeral. I first heard it the day he died and it fit him to a tee.

I was fortunate enough to see George Jones perform this live just a few years before he passed away. Even at his age and the fact he was already quite ill, he sounded amazing. This is quite literally the saddest song ever written.

I gotta say, you got it faster than most. I even have seen some reactors to this song listen to the whole thing and still not get it… often thinking he just got over her. The first and last line of the song sums the whole thing up… “He said I’ll love you till I die.” And “He stopped loving her today.” It’s a Harmonica btw

He was true to his word. He loved her until he died. Of course to quote another country song in the woman's favor, "You can lead a heart to love but you can't make it fall." She just couldn't love him the same way he loved her.

This one rips my heart out! Mister George Jones sings it with such great emotion.....you can feel the way he loved her, you can visualize the moments described.... dressed up to go away... placed a wreath upon his door... soon they'll carry him away...she came to see him one last time..... Just incredible imagery used in the lyrics. Good reaction. God bless you and all here!

You got it before most reactors do. Many get that the man died when he sings "they'll carry him away" and a few do with the line about the wreath upon his door. But not many do right away when the chorus begins, and even fewer with the dressed up to go away. I do agree about the smile--if he was already dead when his friend came to visit, the mortician wouldn't have him smiling for a wake/visitation/viewing. The ambiguity in the song for me has always been in that line. Did the guy die of natural causes (cancer) and felt relieved because he knew the end was near when the friend visited? or was he happy because he had decided that was going to be THE day, and he had invited his friend over for a final goodbye; after the friend left, did he take out those love letters, set them on the night stand, and end his life?

One of the best songs ever written!! Hey, man, you're soooo far behind, in country music greats.... Try "Fancy", by the legendary Reba McEntire (official video), and "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia". Then, by Dolly Parton: "I will Always Love You" (you thought that was Whitney's song, dintcha), "Jolene", and "9 to 5" (one of her fun ones from the movie in which she starred)!! I just found you, and I'm really enjoying your reactions, so far!!
