The thing that bothers me about Kliavkov's comment is that he said that the money would go to more administration because big 10 schools have larger administrations to run their athletic programs. Wouldn't that be good for the administration of UCLA? It's like going to CEO of a company and saying "hey, this new plan of yours is going to make the company 100 billion dollars, but 50 billion of it is getting paid out as a bonus to the CEO and board instead of going to employees and investors". You expect that to convince the CEO and board to not adopt the plan?

I assume the travel costs would include all sports and the travel will be roughest in sports with a lot of games/matches. UCLA will be an afterthought in the BIG... but at least they will be able to pay their bills. 4 PAC schools in the BIG12 enhances both sides. Linking up CTZ schools/fans with MW/Pacific makes after-dark more valuable. The Baylor-BYU ratings were great, right? It's doubtful USC/UCLA will do a lot of those kind of games.

It is a bad comparison to use football to basketball for travel purposes. Basketball teams can play games back to back, or with short turnaround, because it does not take the physical punishment or toll that football does and thus does not require the routine requisite post-game healing and recovery that football needs; its venues and crowds are much smaller, and basketball games due to their much smaller footprint can play mid-week games so that a road swing of a week may have up to five games. All in all, this is not an apples-to-apples comparison. An even bigger argument is time away from academics that long road trips require. Y 'all are arguing this like this is professional sports. These are still amateur student-athletes, even in the Power Five Conferences, the vast majority of players will never turn pro. The education they receive in exchange for their participation in athletics is their compensation, and time away from their compensation makes graduation that much harder.

You can hear it in their tones, they have no regard and no respect for Olympic sport athletes. Especially Craig. The travel is real. For example, UCLA women's volleyball play 2 home matches, then get on a commercial flight (LAX traffic, flight delays and cancellations), fly 5 hours to play at Rutgers and Maryland, fly 5 hours back and then do it again 2 weeks later, flying to Michigan and Michigan State. That's a lot to ask of 19 year olds not getting NIL money.

At the very least Ucla athletics should be taxed for not doing enough to meet the UC system's pledge to reduce carbon emissions. Plus if Ucla's total budget including the B1G payout turns out to not be enough to cover operating expenses and might eventually need a bailout from the University (seeing that they're currently in debt), I would bet securing such funds would be harder to justify since moving to the B1G means travel to more states (4) that are currently on California's state-sponsored travel ban versus the one state currently on that list. For Ucla athletics to ask for such assistance would be inviting the University to be wilfully non-compliant in adhering to California's legislative objectives embodied by its travel ban. If Ucla is allowed to deviate from California's environmental and legislative objectives to play football for money, then other campuses might be willing to deviate from whatever constraints they say hinder their academic missions resulting in a fractionated university system incapable of serving the state of California. Again if...🤔

The PAC-B10-ACC alliances was football only and select games. UCLA going to big 10 is going to be all sports and incur lot of extra costs. And it is more money to fly to Chicago and NY then the Bay Area or Seattle form LA. Not sure if the costs will be as high as kliakoff says but it will be more. UCLA has some kind of contract with the big 10 and when the contract was signed it seems that UCLA had the authority to sign it. If the regents force UCLA to break the contract I think that they would be liable for interference with a contract. The big 10 contracted with multiple entities under the assumption that UCLA would be a member of the big 10 so now all those contracts would have to be renegotiated leading to losses all around and huge liability for the State of California,
@CharlesFosterMalloy2 жыл бұрын
Normally you are right, but the governmental entity can assert governmental or sovereign immunity. Tennessee Valley Authority case. May depend on California sovereign immunity waiver provisos.. I think the the public schools in the ACC can bust that GOR on the same basis. That's why the FSU president is so "assertive" and "agressive."
@jonathansmith68472 жыл бұрын
The problem from the beginning is that UCLA is not a separate college but one part of the university of California system . Normally the individual campuses are allowed to run their own show but the regents have the authority to move ucla if they wish and I assume claim in court that UCLA did not have the authority to make the move it did.
