It is my own view that the Lloyd cello concerto is the logical successor to the famous Elgar work. I was privileged to be involved in the concert performance premiere of this wonderful work here in London - given by a young American cellist and the excellent pro-am Philharmonia-Britannica under its far-sighted founder/conductor Peter Fender. It deserves the widest attention from soloists wherever they might be.

A wonderful concerto by the writer of beautiful music. Love his symphonies which represent to my ears the trauma of his experiences and the ultimate peace and contentment. This concerto should be adopted by cellist everywhere. Thanks KZbin for reminding me of it.

I've been an admirer of Lloyd's work for a while, but I didn't know anything about his life. Such a shame he isn't more well-recognized- his 5th and 8th symphonies are spine-tinglingly good.

Rather have this than the Elgar Cello Concerto any day.......this is far far superior. I still think Lloyd was a giant, as was Havergal Brian....both completely ignored by this country (UK) of Philistines.

This is an excellent Concerto, and I'm glad to finally hear it several years after first knowing of it. It's a work of varied moods, but overall carries much of the pathos of the Elgar Concerto, which I consider the pinnacle of the form (so, heartily disagree with Mr. Pinkerton as to their respective merits). I consider Lloyd's symphonies to be some of the finest of the 20th Century, but his concerti in general to have less impact and importance. This 'Cello Concerto may well be the best of them; it certainly makes me want to become more familiar with it

On par with Finzi. Elgar is tiresome.

What is tiresome is seeing people argue over what is best!! Just enjoy these masterpieces for goodness sake!
