The beautiful thing is, what George describes is relevant to the real world and to the reality of each of us. The struggle for self control, to balance ones life, not to take the easy route, fighting for the ones you love, accepting yourself as you are, being mindfull and kind. Take away words like sith or jedi or the force, and you still have the wise advice of an intelligent man called George Lucas. 2. Lucas has emphasized that the dark side represents selfishness, fear, and aggression, while the light side embodies selflessness, compassion, and harmony with the Force. Its so important that both Theory and Wave recognised the biblical principals in George's explanation of the light side vs the dark side. If more people lived by biblical principles (not necessarily religious dogma), the world would be a better place, and George was trying to teach that.
@ulfberht44319 күн бұрын
I couldn’t agree more! People often get so triggered by any mention of religion, yet they fail to understand that without that religion, we wouldn’t get, as you said, the biblical principles. Live by it, you’ll become a better and more enlightened person. Use it to control or prove others that you’re better than anyone else, you’ll stumble and fall and will take a lot to get back up. It’s ultimately a person’s choice to follow the principles or not and live by their own deeds. But should they not follow the principles and walk a selfish path, ultimately that’s their choice but some aren’t always the best nor do they yield better results. The tricky part is choosing the right, not just what you think is right, but right for others. Choices lead to consequences. I could go on and on but you get the picture.

These are eastern philosophy concepts that George is describing. The sith seek pleasure, power, and control, all of which are impernanent as we all die. The jedi seek inner peace and connection to the oneness of the universe through acts of service and meditation and being warriors of light. These are highly aligned with the teachings of buddhism, taoism, and hinduism (bhagavad gita in particular). George lucas himself is well versed in eastern philosophy and is a practitioner of meditation. Star wars was created in the 70's in California where the hippie movement and the creative types of the time were very interested in these different schools. Shintoism (the religion of the samurai) was an offshoot of taoism (a religion that founded in the same time and the same region as buddhism, along with jainism, and all of these schools built off of hindu teachings). This is important because the jedi themselves were based on samurai. It is These concepts are also taught in the monotheistic religions of the west but as a way to walk in the light of the creator, instead of being described as achieving inner peace (moksha, nirvana, tao). Either translation is fine because it describes living in unity with the universe or living in contrast to it. George likely knew al these things and beautifully designed this galaxy in a way that makes these concepts digestable to all of us, whether we are religious, spiritual, or simply moralist agnostics. All are equally valid. This to me is the point of star wars. Its not the lightsaber battles, or the lore, or spaceships/explosions/or cool technology. It is about how to live in alignment and access unity consciousness in a galaxy that always finds ways to undermine and live in contrast to that, and how to combat the forces both external and internal that threaten this alignment.

I doubt Lucas would be on board with much of the EU that involves sith spirits lingering on after their death. In fact, this is why he actively prevented Filoni from putting Darth Revan and Bane in the Mortis arc.While we criticize Disney for forsaking Lucas' vision, I think EU had already kinda did that. Just imagine how much we would have lost if we followed Lucas' original vision. Freedon Nadd, Marka Ragnos, some depictions of Revan... Personally, I now view dark side as the shortcut and ability to accomplish your desires in the short term be they noble or hedonic in nature in a way that corrupts you and leads you down to nowhere. This is also why it is so appealing. It can be a desire to survive, save the galaxy or save the ones you care about. This definition also explains why dark side can do all sorts of things in the eu ranging from alchemy, sorcery, witchcraft to immortality and soloing planets.
@soyungoyim656110 күн бұрын
It's a shame that George Lucas wasn't interested in continuing the story after episode 6 and instead we have to have stories written by other people, even if some are good, it's not the same. I'd like to know if he would have allowed someone as pure and innocent as Luke to have a wife, especially being someone who was trained by Yoda and Kenobi, 2 "orthodox" Jedis. I don't like it when people say that the Jedi "failed" by not allowing attachments, when the real problem was their arrogance and not paying attention to what was going on.
@jjc54079 күн бұрын
The EU's depiction of the Force and the powers it imbues was all over the place. Having characters casting spells or performing alchemy doesn't belong in the Star Wars universe. And the powers became increasingly over-the-top to the point it was absurd. By comparison the Jedi and Sith in the movies are pathetically weak and unskilled. Rule 1 for any Star Wars writer should be never try to outdo the characters in George's movies.
@jjc54079 күн бұрын
@@soyungoyim6561 it wasn't arrogance so much as complacency and inexperience. They believed the Sith were gone. Nobody had faced them for a thousand years. The last sighting occurred before even Yoda's birth. Sidious took advantage of this. Part of his strategy to create a galactic civil war was to keep the Jedi distracted. They were so focused on defending the Republic that, with the Dark Side clouding their ability to sense the future, they struggled to get to root him out until it was too late. The Jedi certainly didn't fail by not allowing attachments. We saw precisely why that was a necessary doctrine with Anakin who didn't follow it. His attachments led him to the Dark Side. The Jedi understood the dangers of that happening which is why they knew they had to deny themselves. They knew they had to train themselves to be able to let go of all those they cared about and to love someone deeply would make that impossible. Those that see the Jedi as being wrong on this simply don't like their fantasies of being a Jedi being incompatible with their other fantasies.

@@jjc5407 Sith alchemy was an unnatural perversion of the Force that granted unnatural strength that twisted and mutilated life. It's just another facet of the Dark Side. Abusing the natural way of things for quick and easy power. It burns the candle at both ends. That's why ancient Sith APPEARED to be more powerful. They cheated their way to great power, and it came at the cost of their lives, their species and their glorious Empire. Its why the original Sith species went functionally extinct. Think of it like wild shamanism vs the modern orthodoxy of the Jedi and Sith. And to answer the original comment; The idea behind Sith Spirits is their fear of death and desire to live eternal has them literally shackle their immortal soul to the material world, rather than face complete oblivion. They're trapped in a limbo between life and death of their own making. They can neither move on, nor experience the bliss of becoming one with the Force. George wasn't against the Sith Spirits, he was against the surface-level tourism that Dave Filoni understood about them, and how HE wanted to portray them. Especially Revan - who fittingly enough, managed to turn Ajunta Pall's spirit back to the Light, allowing him to let go of the Sith desires, and finally move on in peace.

Lucas had lots to say about how a completely light-sided order moved itself by how qui-gon did gamble, more than once, did defy the code and the council and still is the best Jedi up until Grandmaster Luke. What is lost in context here is that true, full, complete immersion into light is ALSO bad. It breeds inaction, complacency, rigidness, short-sightedness. A Grey Jedi, like Qui-Gon, like Ahsoka and like Grandmaster Luke would understand that wanting, doing it's could be viewed as morally challenging sometimes can be the best course of action. The Jedi didn't want to take power when discovering that Sidious was the Dark Lord, but by trying to do things "right" they created the Empire and the downfall of the order. Had they publicly denounced Palpatine and engulfed the republic into civil war they'd still have a fighting chance and time to strategize, but by their inaction and subservience to the code they took the safer route and the galaxy paid for 25 years. Grey is the way. Also a Good Sith is also possible as exemplefied by Darth Marr, Darth Vectivus and by some extent, Traya.

Lucas put multiple EU references all over the prequels, especially in Episode III. He's brought up constantly in the BTS for the 2003 CW and The Force Unleashed, constantly checking in with the teams to see what work they were doing and hashing out ideas with them. He had to look over everything and sign off on it down to the last story beat, because it all still fell under his brand. Books, comics, shows, games, if it was Star Wars he had to approve of it himself. But even so, ultimately he was allowed to contradict whatever he wanted because, again, Star Wars was his. The EU writers just had to work around any retcons he entered into films, and they were generally pretty good about patching up those holes. He did care, but sometimes in order to make the prequels' stories work a few things had to be sacrificed here and there.
@jjc54079 күн бұрын
Maul and Ahsoka are in the EU novels. There just aren't that many set during the Prequel era. Frankly both characters appearing outside the movies are dreadful ideas. Maul got sliced clean in two and fell down a seemingly bottomless shaft. He served his purpose and resurrecting him was ludicrous and done because of his popularity with fans. Equally ludicrous was the idea of Anakin having a Padawan. Nothing in the movies even hints at the possibility and it's quite clear that he's not ready for that kind of responsibility never mind during a war where he's fighting on the front line. Disney Star Wars is an abomination, but let's not pretend everything George did was good.

The ideas that George was talking about in this video are there in the prequels, they may have been told kindof clunkily and awkwardly, but they were there. Before making the prequels, George wanted to get someone else to direct the prequels, most notably Spielberg. But they turned it down, which is why George ended up with directing duties. I sometimes wonder if the prequels would’ve been better received had another director come in and smoothed out the big ideas he was trying to tell with the prequels. The sequels had a chance to do just this, honestly I think even JJ and Rian could’ve directed a George Lucas written story and presented it in a satisfying way. Disney tossing his 7-9 storys in the trash I think is a decision that they probably regret now.

Interestingly, Anakin ends up “bringing” balance to the force, but not maintaining it. In the EU, Luke maintained balance in the force through wisdom, something that the extremes of both sides couldn’t do.
@ArcticWolf00Alpha08 күн бұрын
This is why the criticism of the Sequels and Lukes character assassination needs to be upheld and why the “Sequels will be more appreciated later with time" argument will never work. The sequels took what was a clear establishment of what balance in the force means and tried to blend it into something it wasn’t. Luke choosing to "let the Jedi end" in the ST was not only putting a middle finger to the very core of what Star Wars messaging was, but also the very concept of what the light side of the force represents as a force of good in a Galaxy far far away. The light side is balance, it doesn’t mean that the Light side and Dark side have to continue to rise and fall like the sequels said they should, it simply means that there must be a force for good no matter who or what is pushing it forward and that yes represented by those with qualities of the light side. The jokers at Disney want to push this awful idea that the Dark side and light side should be at the same power in order for the force to be at balance. It’s completely wrong. The Jedi were and are still a force for good and their efforts to keep the Galaxy at peace shouldn’t be swept under the rug, sure they screwed up in some areas but they were still the right people to keep the Galaxy safe and it’s awful that Disney tries to and even Filoni make them out to be this flawed entity that who’s morals shouldn’t be upheld. The light side of the force is balance. It should be the end goal. Not just for people in the SW universe but also people in real life. Period.

I feel like the thing he didn't touch on much is what happens when you lean into the light and aviod the dark entirely (at least in this video), and I wonder if that is spoken to in any recordings from the man himself?

Mannn I'm glad I'm not the only one who cares so much for this awesome story. I've seen theses so many times😢.. I just want Star Wars to be like what it used to be before 2015. Star wars the expanded universe deserved the Harrypotter treatment. Hopefully it can still happen. Disney Starwars sequel trilogy era deserve to be decanonized just for the FACT constructed to destroy everything that came before and to inject toxic ideologies of a mental group and what Zoolander azz people said in the media what starwars was so called missing back then. Disneyfied LucasFilm want to Destroy George Lucas's philosophy for StarWars with our worlds bs when this is a galaxy that's supposed to be a galactic mystical universe that's far far away.

Pretty much explains that balance in the force isn't having equal parts dark and light like some fans think. The darkside is literally throwing the force out of balance because it is an insatiable desire for more and more things. Its a spiritual cancer basically.
@Tyloron10 күн бұрын
It pretty much is the inverse of the conflict that you see in franchises like Kingdom Hearts. In that series, balance literally means the co-existence of light and darkness. But here, it's referring to the everlasting clashing between the two poles.
@matthewk491210 күн бұрын
Yes you are mostly right, but the balance still includes the darkness in the sense that it is part of the natural world. That's why George created the Clone Wars Mortis arc, and the Father says that darkness is part of the balance. Because the dark side corrupts, it's always trying to get the upper hand, which wrecks the natural balance. So it's up to whoever wields the light (the Mortis Daughter, the Rebel Alliance etc.) to counter it and keep it in check. But notice that the Mortis Daughter never seeks to kill her brother, it's really about using the light to counter the darkness.
@matthewk491210 күн бұрын
The "Grey Jedi" fans have completely lost the plot and misunderstood George's philosophy. Like I get that they want moral complexity, and the idea of not leaning towards any extreme, but the world that George Lucas created has explicitly labeled the dark side as evil and light as good. The balance in simplest terms, is that both good and evil naturally exist. But because the dark side is greedy and always wants more, it's the force that ruins the balance. And the light has to rise to put things back to the middle. When the Rebels win and the Republic is restored, there's that middle point - because the Republic has both light and dark within. It's not an entirely good or bad system.
@zedbruh721210 күн бұрын
Disagree Luke uses the dark side in legends and uses it for good George in this interview says it's about balance, not getting ride of one or the other
@Tyloron10 күн бұрын
@@zedbruh7212 If that were the case, then Star Wars would be like Kingdom Hearts in how they treat light and darkness.

I write this to have a grown up discussion. So please, if this should be the case have your think before you take your impuls for a law of physics... If you listen to what Lucas says about the dark side one could say that does fit a lot with Reva. (Just an observation) If you arw interested to hear my points, please ask :)!

Idk about that statement from theory that anything different from George's vision is blasphemy Some of the EU was different but I think added to the overall possibility of the franchise Like is plageus canon according to George?
@ItApproaches9 күн бұрын
This does kind of paint the Sith as all dumb....It's like they are all just failed Jedi so they said we'll make our own thing lol. You would think a Sith would come along that is more like a "Grey Sith" like how there is a Grey Jedi. A Sith that has no problem with using the dark side, and killing anyone who gets in his way, but is aware of the reason Sith all seem to fail and so he would become self aware and not fall victim to the dark side but use it as an ally to achieve his goals, but he's not interested in having an apprentice cause he would know that they would try to stab in the back. Ironically I described the Sith my my Star Wars books....
