On Vimeo there's a video interview with Rochberg where he talks a little bit about this work, how people close to him told him that he's crazy doing it. That it sounds like Brahms. We've been there, done that. Time to move on. The video is entitled "George Rochberg, Interview 2005". Go to the 8:19 time mark of that video to hear what he has to say about it.

Thank you! I did that! It was such a great point to prove. One of the most noble sentiments to prove in art. That beauty is not dead.

through out all the composer stories from the 20th century the main take away is to write whatever the fuck you believe in, and fuck the academia and the dogma

I vividly remember the controversy that ensued when I was playing this on the stereo in between my two classes at Juilliard, as pupils wandered in and became curious as to what it was. I'd never heard before and i was interested to see what they might make of it. I asked them who they thought might have written it. I remember on guess was R. Schumann. I said, "no, this was composed in the. 1970's". Then some smarty said, "Oh, it has to be George Rochberg". Then the class split sharply between those who thought doing such a thing was preposterous, and those who simply found it beautiful. I'm not sure I can defend my reaction to it, but I find it very beautiful. Curious that this video, with the score, doesn't tell us who the players are.

I appreciate the anecdote, but the video does say who the players are: Taeguk Mun, cello & Grace Lim, piano - you need to click "See More" in the video description to see all details.
