I think Vampire the Masquerade is a good answer to this trope... I very much enjoy their version of the vampire... In that version Vampires are conflicted, on one side there's an insatiable hunger that requires blood, on the other hand there's their humanity, The following is an excerpt from the VTMB RPG video game that explains this perfectly, J will be Smiling Jack, P, the player: QUOTE J:"Remember what I said, don't kill them, at least not the innocent, you're a monster now, make no mistake one of the damned and the fallen you need to hold on to every shred of humanity you have" P: Let's say I get a bit overzealous... what happens then? J: "An innocent's an innocent, you kill one, even a worthless bum even by accident and it's gonna cost you a piece of your own humanity, bringing you close to that beast welling up inside you P: "the beast? what exactly does that mean? J: "The beast? it's always there, waiting to take over and when it does, it's like a wild animal wearing your skin, desperate, scared, reckless, it'll do anything to survive and it's YOU who has to deal with the consequences." P: "So I can't kill anyone? that seems a little, uh, restricting... J: "ah-ah-ah I said INNOCENT humans, if some asshole levels a 12-gauge your way, you drain them, skin them and bash in his skull, self preservation is a vital part of humanity after all, my favourite part in fact... eheheheh P: "I think I follow" J: "the only way to fight the beast is to keep in touch with your humanity and don't.go.hungry, it's a fine line. END QUOTE So in VTMB, while a vampire will never be a hero, they can easily be made into an anti-hero, like Wolverine (who kills constantly) Deadpool (duh) or even Batman (not kill... mosty but does some pretty questionable things)... the only problem with them is they still need to feed (drink blood) but as left pretty clear in the VTMB video game they can live off of bloodbags... I've done entire runs with bloodbags only (tutorial not whitstanding) and it's doable... expensive as hell... but doable. So they'll never be squeaky clean but even superman has killed peeps so... acceptable.

@@ahmedaly4328 Sure, thing. Basically, Roose acts and looks like a vampire to me. He is obsessed with blood and leeching, and is just generally creepy. George R. R. Martin has written about vampires before, and Roose Bolton is very similar to them in description and character, in a way. The leeching part is something he does a lot. He believes in leeching out "bad blood," and recommends his followers to the same. That is my theory. I don't say that he is a LITERAL vampire, just that he has very vampire-like traits. To be fair, characters like Angel and Spike aren't really that old. Their souls were nonexistent for the majority of their vampire lives. Here is a take on Vampires I have that nobody else seem to write about. Think about "Real World" vapaires for a moment and how and why they would and could exist??? As a person that has no thyroid along with millions of other with hypo-thyroid diseases that take medication to help use maintain our throid levels on a daily basis, how far would we go to get that hormone in us. Imagins after a nuclear war or someother disaster that would collapse governments around the world and of course all pharacudical companies ceasing to operate. How would we get our medicine? For the people that don't know, back in the good old days doctors would dole out doses of cow blood to give people the required amounts of the hormone as not to suffer the horrible side effects related to not having it. Long story short, a desperate person with a thyroid problem is a post apocalyptic world might kill another human to drink his blood to get the required amounts of hormone. That would be a credible reason to see actual Vampires emerge out of fiction. Just a thought.

It's not really that rare or that hard to write. Good vampire stories are just buried by garbage like "Twilight". The sad thing is that the greatest vampire author of all time, Stoker, is to blame. Before he made them sexy and noble, vampire lore was closer to zombie and ghost lore. Even the Witcher vampires follow the Stoker archetype. Even though "The Strain" novels eventually went off the rails, they're closer to traditional vampires than anything in Stoker's lineage (Anne Rice, Twilight, etc).

I had this teacher for Fantastic Literature and American Film (this was like 2006ish) and the one time I brought up ASoIaF, he didn‘t know it, but when i mentioned GRRM, his response was like „oh you mean the guy who wrote this super-freaky vampire book“. I think he might have shown me the book. He was an expert on Horror Films, so that probably explains his literary priorities.

This video was named poorly. It’s actually a very insightful and interesting take on politics and the power dynamic throughout human history. For the first time ever we might have the ability to change that and are overwhelmingly being voted down by a selfish and destructive generation. George R R Martin belonged to this generation and was one of the few who fought for a better world. Only comment I disagree with was that he left the world in a better place. He should have said he left the world in a better place than it would have been otherwise.

Rathelm MC In terms of selfish corporate greed, world destruction and power dynamic? Hasn’t changed a bit. Arguably got worse.
@rathelmmc31944 жыл бұрын
Fred Chapman, you’re leaving out all the positives. World hunger has been reduced by approximately 75% same with world abject poverty by about the same percentage. American’s material wealth has greatly increased as well. Home sizes have doubled from a median of 1400 square feet to about 2500. We have more diverse food selection than 1970. More diverse entertainment options, remember only like 10 channels in 1970. Cars are just better, no need to expand on that. And need I mention the expansion of civil rights? Are there negatives. Of course! But I’d argue there’s been more positives than negatives.

Edit: I paused the video to write the bellow, then started it again, and George made exactly the point I thought I was criticizing him with . I'm an idiot for commenting before having watched the whole video and will keep this up as a token of my shame: Don't really follow his argument of applying subjectivist values to prey/preditor relations. Is the lion evil to the goat? Dunno, is the lion evil to the reasonable human which it eats? Not in the relevant, moral sense, only as evil as the tornado. No reasonable human (the only ones using the moral descriptors) would say the lion is evil as Martin aledges the human goat would. Evil without presumed reasoned choice doesn't make much sense, but once you have reasoned choice, excusing yourself to your nature doesn't work anymore either. Similarly, the vampires might consider themselves evil if they put moral value into consciousness, like a strict utilitarian who puts moral value on suffering/pleasure might think eating meat evil. So sure, the vampires might just HAVE different standards and not see themselves as evil, but the predator/prey relationship doesn't ensure that. For that reason too, vampires as (tragic, maybe suicidal) heroes to our standards can work, as a kind of ultimate redemption and self sacrifice. Not that twilight does that, mind.

I read Twilight and I really don't think it's a terrible story. In fact, it had some really good moments. I'm not saying that it's a masterpiece, but I get the sense that 99% of the people who make fun of it are just jumping on a bandwagon and have no idea what they're talking about. If you want to make fun of Twilight, that's totally okay, but at least make sure that you tried it out for yourself first.

@@LuthienAlexandra I didn't say you had to like it. I said that I believed that most people who made fun of it had no idea what they were talking about because they had never gone to the effort of finding out anything about it. In fact, that describes most everything that masses of people mock and belittle. Also, I love vampires too and definitely prefer the fearsome warriors of the night to Stephanie Meyer's gothic supermodels. But most of her characters are still interesting and compelling.

People often make the “human as cattle” analogy with Vampires but the distinction is that unlike cows there prey is capable of speech. Of philosophical discourse. Many humans are vegetarian. How much more so if cows and pigs could speak to us in language we understand and beg not be devoured?
@Sienisota5 жыл бұрын
I also thought of vegetarians. I suppose it all comes down to; CAN vampires survive without human blood? A cat would die if it does not get meat. Humans can survive without meat, so we have a choise. Suppose a vampire only has two choices if they want to live: Killing the individual providing blood, or capturing a human and use them for multiple feedings? In such a situation, perhaps a vampire would see not killing the individual human as akin to animal cruelty? Prolonging the suffering just to get more meals out of it. Like torturing an animal before killing it because torture makes animal body to release enzymes that make it taste better? (Personally I think those people who think a tortured animal tastes better should get tortured themselves) Revealing your species is not an option: Perhaps some have tried and that is where the vampire lore comes from? Perhaps vampires have a society that kills every vampire that tells and every human that knows? Perhaps vampires have evolved so that they simply can't reveal themselves? You are a separate species that needs to feed on humans, you were born that way and live 20 times as long as a human. What would be the most moral choice? When I think about it am so glad humans can live without meat if we want to...
@codyvandal28605 жыл бұрын
Sienisota Well, if we presume that the feeding doesn’t require killing the individual it seems perfectly reasonable (if uninteresting) for vampires to purchase or otherwise obtain large quantities of blood. I mean a super long lifespan and powers means that money is going to be pretty easy to come by.

That philosophical question seems to be one that the Starks and Martels are on opposite sides of. The Martels see their natural sexual nature as a gift from the gods, while the Starks believe in containing one’s sexual desires in order to aspire to a higher calling, one outside of their own nature.

Stephenie Meyer sold more books than George R.R.Martin. And she can literally publish all the books in a series and finish it. What do you think of that, Georgie? Maybe you should call her, she could give some good advice on how to write and how to your treat your fans: Give them what they want. The day that George Martin finishes a series of books, and the day that films based on his work earn 3.3 billion dollars at the box office, we can talk about who is the best author. Until then, less arrogance and more work, chubby.
@UnfoundFilms9 ай бұрын
Yeah, and Stephanie Meyer’s books are significantly worse. But if we’re gonna insult people based on how many millions they’ve made let’s do that. So, wanna compare your success to George’s? How many people know and respect your name and work? How many will remember your listless ass when you’re gone?

The conflict between Boltons and Starks reflects the rivalry between Vampires and Werewolves. Boltons leach and if you believe the theory, wear skins of dead people to gain immortality. Starks are so often compared to wolves.
