Mercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell has lost his Belgian Grand Prix win after his car was found to be underweight during post-race checks. And of course he's pretty mad about it. But could Mercedes have done anything at all to avoid this? Had the one-stop resulted in that much rubber loss of the tyres to the point his car got underweight? Or did he forget to pick up enough rubber on the cool-down lap due to the excitement?

So, I get it now. Mercedes tried to cheat the rule by only taking out enough fuel to meet the requirement, and not completely drain all the fuel which would cause the car to be under weight. So they knew that they were underweight. The only real question is, when did they know, did they know at the beginning of the race, because trying to blame it on tire wear doesn’t cut it!

There was no cooldown ,because of the long lap length. Anyone who watched the race would have seen Russell cross the line then enter the pit exit. They need a fuel sample and most teams don't carry any spare fuel.

Spa Francorchamps does not have a cool-down lap. It's a long lap, so they re-enter the Pit Lane from the exit end. Nobody 'picks up' much rubber in that short distance.

Im a lH fan but 1 stop was russels call. To extemd his tires. Lewis went wgainst his gut feeling and came in on piwalls orders same as everyone else in the grand prix. Russel was adamant to extemd his stint. Which at the point he cpuld come in calculations said it was gonna be potentially p5 either way. So he took a chamce and stayed out. Lewis could have done same but he didnt trust his gut

They tried to mitigate the risk to the team of having both drivers on a high risk strategy. It makes perfect sense. And George was more insistent that the strategy could work, Lewis had the option of doing the same and then they would have had to make a more difficult decision. But even if it didn't make perfect sense, their number one priority now when a decision has to be made between the two drivers should be with the guy who staying on the team next year. In that regard, Lewis made his bed, he has to sleep in it.

Mistake? More like cheating over the course of the race that 1.5kg less has a much bigger effect than people think. All Russel had to do was take the second pit stop and he likely wouldn't have been checked. Plus to the best of my knowledge a set of fresh tyres were used in the second weighing to discount the effects of no cool down lap, the car was deliberately under weight and MB knew that. MB did not contest the DQ because they knew they would have a lot of awkward questions to answer, pretty underhand of MB and toto

It was only a technical breach .In race the car was running inside minimum weight . Once the fuel was taken out and reweighed inside it came up light . So he would not have had an on track advantage ,though it did break the dry weight regulation / So not cheating but engineering cock up . If a car did the 44 laps without a safety car deployment or VSC, etc., it would burn less fuel if it stopped twice rather than 0nce. Going down the main straight at maximum speed consumes the most fuel during the lap at most tracks. If Russell's car was setup for a two stop, three stint run, without disruption, it is very possible that he could have used up that fuel on a 43 rather than a 42 full throttle front straight passes.

how can he be furious at Mercedes??? his car was 1.5 under weight than the regulation and 2 kg lighter than Hamiltons car, so if Mercedes made his car lighter than his teammates car purposely, that means they gave him the edge advantage (overall this 2kg would amount to 4-5 seconds advantage) so without this 4-5 seconds advantage i don't think he would have being able to win. or if this weight loss was caused by using his tires longer than everyone, that would not still be solely Mercedes fault as he was the one wanted to follow the one stop strategy. as far is this ''cooling lap'' is concern as everyone is yapping about it, there is not cooling lap in spa. so his strategy was doomed from the get go. i watched the race live, and you can clearly see toto was not as animated as his usual self when his drivers just finished 1-2. he knew there was something coming. (why else would they try to leave some fuel in the car trying to trick the FIA) i think Mercedes did not anticipated a win coming to the race but they wanted to give Russel the edge, Hamilton did great to put his car on the leading position and get out from the DRS zone in the early laps, his race was with Piastri in the third stint as he thought Russel had to stop (that was confirmed during his radio with his engineer), then Mercedes decided to go with the one stop strategy for Russel. whether it be of the strategy or Mercedes making his car lighter purposefully, Russel has no reason to be mad at Mercedes, because both the scenarios give him an advantage. if we are to believe the email leak that reveals Mercedes are trying to sabotage Hamilton, this all make sense, so Russel should just sit back and enjoy it till it last.

Seems the best way to avoid this in the future is to weigh the car without tyres. If everybody has been getting around this by picking up rubber from the track, then surely everyone has been running underweight all this time. Surely they, Pirelli at least, that estimates the amount of rubber lost from the tires by going with the one stop strategy. I just like to know what this contributed to the 1.5 kilos they were short. But I don't hear that being discussed yet. And Toto hasn't said what mistake the team made. In any event between now and the end of this season maybe the only opportunity that Lewis has to win races as at this point it seems pretty clear he is moving to an inferior team.

There was little to no long run tyre deg data on hard tyres owing to weather conditions & red flags in FP1 through FP3. Pirelli would NOT have that info as tyre deg per compound is determined by [1] compound construction (which Pirelli knows) and [2] up-to-date track abrasion conditions (which Pirelli doesn't know). Everyone, including Pirelli, did NOT have long run tyre deg data for the hard tyres on the 2024 Spa circuit.

Not sure the weight of Lewis, but he passed the weight check. Only 1 litre is needed for the fuel sample but a bit of a coincidence the car plus fuel magically was at 798.0kg on the dot. That's still not enough though if a litre of fuel is taken out. The tank wasn't fully drained either but the wording was awkward imo and makes it sound like Merc didn't drain the fuel in the manner they declared. Not 100% on that though.

The underweight of 1.5Kg throughout the race at 0.3 seconds/lap advantage would give a 4.2 seconds advantage over the race. I think that would make him GR third without the underweight mistake.

Various factors impact on lap time but weight is significant. If the lap takes 2 minutes then 0.2% is over two tenths per lap gain. Even if you halve that and it was only a 50 lap race it still equates to a 5 second advantage at the end. Hamilton was only half a second behind at the line!
