A very, very special album to me. Dad bought this record for me years and years ago, and it is like no other. Mr. Shearing plays solo piano throughout, and both the playing and the recording are absolutely stunning. The MPS Studios piano sounds so warm and full. You owe it to yourself to buy this on vinyl and listen to it that way as well; you will be amazed at how good it sounds (although this upload by Bernie's Bootlegs sounds great, too).

Fabulous album, recorded on one of the very best piano n the world, the very famous piano at MPS studio in Villingen, Scharztwald, Germany, Steinway Hamburg, handed made. I went to this place a dozens time. Every body played on that piano, Basie, Duke, Oscar, Erroll, Bill Evans, Monty Alexander, George, Friedrich Gulda, Andre Previn etc etc and they all said that was one of the 3 best piano in the world at that time. This recording is a great Masterpiece to me. You did a great job on that Man. Bravo !

This is my most favorite solo piano album of all time. Incredible blending of jazz and classical concepts, and some unexpected tunes and singing along the way. Mr. Shearing creates a great musical conversation with each piece, taking you through thoughtful ups and downs, choruses and verses, making this recording stand out in stark contrast to other solo jazz recordings that might lose you along their meandering way. One of the finest solo recordings for piano ever produced no doubt. I believe the original liner notes speak of an experimental recording technique as well, which is responsible for the rich base, balanced tones, and incredibly full sound for one piano.

about to do some studying and youtube suggested me a 10 hour long "sitting outside in 1949 with music playing in the other room" videos. clicked it and Shazam'd a song called "Guess ill go back home" by Glenn Miller, but it came up as George Shearing (on the Nat King album), and this is what came up on youtube searching for it. what a awesome accident

You know, I hesitate to write this, fearing it will be misunderstood. Have wondered if being sightless couldn’t be advantageous if born sightless. In Shearings case, he had no distractions. His head was filled with notes and he knew what those notes sounded like since his hearing was fine. This has just been a curiosity of mine. I lightly claim that George Shearing achieved greatness simply BECAUSE he was blind. Those mature readers will understand what I’ve tried to say.

There is much to read in interviews with Shearing that will answer all of your questions. He was also quite an accomplished classical player. As a professional pianist myself, he is one of my greatest inspirations

Before Sir George left England for America , he was acclaimed as the white Art Tatum . The great Bud Powell paid him a wonderful compliment, though a bit backhanded. He said he cannot believe a blind man can play like that.

He uses La cathedral engloutie, and it works so fine here with My ship. Incredible touch. I have the LP. Besides Yesterdays my favorite track.
